Nym468's Ultramarines

I started collecting Ultramarines in the mid 90's, somewhere towards the end of 2nd Edition (I think). I've never played nor had any interest in playing I just like the hobby part of it. I recently stopped by a local GW store and picked up a box of Close Combat Terminators. My hands are a lot more steady then when I was ten, so my painting has improved. It's definitely not to the level of free-handing artwork but some details get included on the models. I recently did a test model of a robed Ultramarine Veteran (I'm not sure where he fits in organizationally but I like how he turned out). I'm working on an entire Terminator Squad armed with Cyclone Missile Launchers. Here's a few photos, C & C more than welcome, enjoy....

This image has my first Space Marine attempt when I was about 12 and I am planning on leaving him in that state (for old times sake)

There's something wonderfully retro about an ultramarine army with the old banners you had to print out and goblin green bases, back when you got a flamer, a Missile launcher, and a chainsword in the tactical box, and you liked it.

Ha! There's a "that guy" in the seventh pic, next to the dread. I still have mine around somewhere, not sure where though.

Thanks for the comments. I still haven't worked out the squad numbering for the veterans. Any ideas? Should terminators be squads 1-?, or perhaps stern guard or vanguard ( not that I currently have any) as 1-? I'm thinking of making a full ten man squad of veterans in robes, just for a change of pace.

Well I've actually came to the decision to just make my battle company and designate them accordingly. The terminators are marked as Veterans of the 1st company and so forth if I used a different battle companies devastators then they would have different trim with standard squad markings. To give a better perspective, I have 5th company with ebonite, my sgts have red helms with white laurels or blue with white laurels. My Terminators have all white helms with red markings and white shoulder trim. Devastators have ebonite since my battle company has only 1 ten man squad of those. So if I wanted anotehr 10 I would mark them I (think) as 9th company trim as a grey.

I think your collection looks good, very much like my Black Templars that needed a touch up when I came back to the game and hobby. May I suggest the GW washes to add some additional depth to your blues? It's all the rave right now and darkens those solid colors in the recesses and low spots to make the raised portions 'pop' without taking lots of time to buld up using different shades of paints. Welcome back Nym!

The codex suggests that in many chapters the first company is divided in two between the sternguard and vanguard. Perhaps that's not evenly divided but even so I would think that assault terminators squads would be made up of vanguard and the sternguard would make up the shooty terminators. At which point it is a matter of convenience as to how you number your veteran squads as they'll keep the same squad number whether in power armour or TDA. As any first company squad can be issued TDA then termies can have any squad number from 1 to 10.

+1 for the washes, to add some depth to your models. Maybe Badab Black or Devlun Mud.

Overall, your army looks great, and its always nice to see some old school models in there for us oldies :D Nice and neat painting style, that will only get better the more you paint.

Congratulations on a nice army!

Well my OOP metal scouts are done. I'm not sure how I have seven, perhaps I bought two pack of three per blister and one Sgt. Anyway, this was my first attempt at painting eyes; overall I'm really happy with how they turned out. When I picked up the paint brush a couple months ago and dug these guys out of a shoe box, I'll say my paint scheme was interesting. I remember the old catalog I used to order them didn't include color photos of blister pack figures so I had to come up with something on my own (Imagine a Crayola box exploding on a Space Marine; it wasn't pretty). I have to say of all the figures to paint these scouts were definitely my least favorite. They took twice as long as a full battle brother. It may be I'm just not a fan of the metal figures. Here is a Sgt. and his six scouts.

Pics of my recently completed chaplain coming soon....

Soon has arrived. This is my Chaplain I finished up a couple days ago. Overall I'm really happy with the results. I ordered him a while ago but was waiting on a super fine detail brush to arrive because doing it with the tools I had at the time would not have done him justice. Even though he's a metal figure I like painting this one (probably because he was multi-part). I give you the Ultramarines 2nd Company Chaplain.

Good to see another person coming back to the hobby after so long. I was away about as long.

As others have said, it's nostalgic spotting some of the oldies in your collection (mine was sold off in the intervening years). Get some washes from your GW store and they'll really improve your Ultras.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Loving the old models! I recently stumbled upon some old 2nd Ed marines in my closet. After seeing these I may just take a whack at repainting them

Two bits of advice for you: Thin your paints a bit more, and try some washes or basic highlights. A couple of your marines look a bit globby, and I think a highlight or a wash for some shadowing could really make these guys pop. Loving the old school blue and yellow too. Keep it up!

Cheers,

-Kal

It's lovely to see some OOP figures mixed in to your army. I love your work and you're improving in leaps and bounds. Your painting is very neat and the metallics are lovely and bright.

In terms of critique to help develop your style - you should give the GW washes a go. They're a lot friendlier than the old inks used to be - they work wonderfully with metallics to help dull them down. Maybe give just a couple a go - maybe Badab Black and Devlan Mud to give them a try?

I also found that adding a watered down Chaos Black along all the recessed details with help add depth to the armour. You could also try a highlight of say Ultramarines Blue with a little Space Wolves Grey for an edge highlight.

I hope that helps - and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I took a bit of break from painting over the holidays. I wasn't feeling very inspired and there is nothing worse than painting without the proper motivation. Well I'm back. A little progress has been made regarding my 10 man Cyclone Terminator Squad. My previous posts had one of them included. I know rule wise and force organization wise having a ten man terminator squad all with cyclones isn't allowed, but seeing as I have no intention of playing a game I couldn't resist the temptation to see what such a unit would look like. Here are the first two standing with an assault marine I just finished up. He still needs decals I just wasn't in the mood to put them on after I finished him.

This is my current project. Reclaiming an old razorback from the mid nineties. Lets just say that its original paint scheme was straight off the box with the red turret plating and red side hatches. The paint was sloppy and frankly the thing was covered in dust. Having a red turret and side hatches just doesn't go with the general theme I have for the army. I dunked it in simple green and stripped it but my liberal use of glue to put it together originally has left it permanently scarred. Hopefully some creative use of decals will be able to hide the blemishes.

Progress on the razorback has largely ground to a halt as I'm waiting on more paint to arrive in the mail.

Anyone have any advice on good products to use to properly thin the paint out. I've heard a few drops of alcohol is pretty useful.
