Thanks for the input, I definitely like the green better.

On to other news, I finished up the last of the dreadnoughts I had laying around. I give you Venerable Dreadnought Severian, 2nd Dreadnought of the Ultramarines 1st Company.

This is my first real attempt at glow effects. I had done a little on the razorback but it's hardly noticeable.

Big update, took everyone's advice and decided to work on the bases for all the figures. I decided to combine the effort with washing all the figures and vehicles that hadn't been washed. It was somewhere in the order of 31 figures, 1 dreadnought, and two tanks. It took forever, but its done. I also finished up three more of the members of 1st Company 2nd Squad all of whom are armed with cyclone missile launchers. The bases for all the figures are still very simple but I definitely like the change. Just a bit of white glue and some gray gravel.

In the background you can see the Stormraven boxes, yep thats two, they just showed up the other day. That particular project is gonna have to wait for a while. I'm going to be using the Chapterhouse Studios truscale kits which have already arrived. I'm waiting on an alternate top turret for each from Chapterhouse and LR Assault Cannons for a chin mount. One stormraven and its extension is already primed.

I didn't have time early this morning for a second update (had to go to sleep) but after finishing the three terminators I decided it was time to base coat all the remaining marines I had. So after two hours of work I had base coated 2 terminators with cyclones (last of the squad), 4 assault marines, 2 robed veterans, and 5 tactical marines. It was a lot of work and by the end of it my eyes were a bit blurry but I can't stop singing the praises of having the airbrush. This would have taken forever by hand.

Well I was digging around in the box of incomplete marines when I realized I hadn't ever finished painting the last 2nd Edition Tactical Squad member.

Finished off another Assault Marine, only three left to finish off the squad.

Completed another robed veteran. Unfortunately his helmet got the last bit of paint from the rattle can so it got kinda mangled.

Loving the old school look, Ultras are where I started back in 1992 and Ive always loved seeing the old colour scheme. The newer style of 2nd company Ultras with the gold trim bothers me a bit. B) Look forward to more updates and your painting is coming on brilliantly.

Here are the WIP photos of the stormraven.

When I first started removing all the parts from the sprues I had every intention of doing a fully detailed interior. That dream quickly died when I got a little overzealous putting basic sections together and realized there was going to be no way to properly paint the interior with those sections connected. So rather than run the risk of breaking something, this stormraven will be all buttoned up. It features the Chapterhouse extension which fit like a glove. I also purchased their alternate top turret

http://chapterhousestudios.com/image/cache/data/product%20images/Feb2012Releases/SRturrets-500x500.jpg

I wasn't a fan of the servitor turret at all.

One of my major concerns was doing the massive engines some justice with their paint job. I didn't want to have monochromatic engines that had never seen any use. So after putting a light basecoat of boltgun metal on them I switched to black and started doing work on the intakes and exhaust. The results are really great considering I was just messing around to see what happened.

While some may see a mangled, "oh my god what have you done to this model" image. If we all pull out our handy ruler a quick measurement will reveal that the circle is the exact diameter of a land raider assault cannon turret. I had seen a previous version of a lower gun done by someone that was mounted directly underneath the assault ramp. The owner explained the the cannon would be "capable" of sliding to the rear to allow the assault ramp to drop. Seemed to me a little impractical given the mechanical and feed connections required for a gun that spits out that much lead. But I have to give that person credit for inspiring my creation (whoever you are). Rather than have a sliding turret, mine is mounted in the original stand holder and with the landing gear extended and the turret turned to the rear and parallel to the underbody of the SR this beast could land without destroying the turret. Naturally the above photo is the end result of a Dremel and some serious patience. I wanted the turret ring, which had to have its lower collar removed, to sit flat against the underbelly of the SR. Updates soon....

So I'm slowly piecing the SR together and I realize I've got enough bits to do four different things with regard to the top hull configuration and now I'm completely torn. I really like the chapterhouse turret but it almost seems too big. I'm not a huge fan of the intake sitting on top but it seems to help the chapterhouse turret blend in better. I did move the intake further to the rear, it doesn't look right sitting directly behind the turret. Engines don't like brass shell casings flying in the intake. I do however like the land raider turret as well.

Well the first Stormraven is nearing completion. Just finishing up the wash which is taking forever, I never realized the number of recessed areas on the model. With all the modifications I did to the model assembly took a fairly long time. The chapterhouse turret took a lot of modification to work correctly, because they made the barrel section of each gun removable there are a lot pieces to get together. I was going to magnetize the gun (it includes the proper magnets) but the pin and socket molded into the barrel and receiver section wasn't pretty so it's now glued on. The top cover has slots meant to accommodate two ridges molded into the top of each receiver. But because of shrinkage of the resin parts those ridges no longer mated with the top cover correctly so it took some careful work with a Dremel to remove them and have the cover sit correctly.

I give you Stormraven I of the Ultramarines 2nd Company. This was definitely a bear of a project. Glad to be finished. One more is still waiting in the wings but it will have to wait a while. This thing could not have been completed without the airbrush. I couldn't imagine trying to hand paint this monster. The air intake was moved to the rear because it just seemed to be crowding the top turret and it have the beast some better lines.

Stormraven is looking awesome (fingers crossed for 6th ed!) and the rest of the army is looking 90's fantastic! Really digging the yellow shoulder pad trims, my first ever army (back in 1993) were ultramarines and I used the same classic scheme.

My only piece of advice to really seal the 2nd edition look would be to paint the gravel on the bases goblin green, and then give them a quick drybrush with something a little lighter (GW Rotting Flesh if you can get hold of some), then the nostalgia will be complete!

Finished up two more OOP scouts. I picked them up on eBay to round out the squad with all the available scout types. Still waiting to be painted are another sniper and a scout with a heavy bolter.

Finished up a test model for a squad I'm putting together. This will be the 1st Company 4th Sternguard Squad "The Hunters." Its composed of Scout Sergeants who no longer have scouts to command either through attrition, advancement, death, or reassignment. A previous post somewhere on B&C discussed the lineage of Scout Sergeants and where they came from. One idea presented was that these Sergeants are full battle brothers that were given the choice to advance to the 1st Company or to become Sergeants in the 10th Company. I think this idea works the best because you would naturally want the absolute best teaching new recruits. With this background in mind these marines are armed with silenced boltguns and sniper rifles. Such equipment would allow the chapter to field full battle brothers in a scout role in environments where scouts would not survive. The black shoulder armor is to define them as a "Special Forces" unit rather than a normal marine squad. Plus their intricate knowledge of scout tactics and weapons would create a squad with devastating impact on the battlefield. Here's the link the discussion surrounding this unit.
