Here is my first attempt at painting 40k miniatures. I'm just going for nice table top quality, not gold demean standard.

(The light blue cape in the background is the cap. from the black reach set. He is done but I don't have any pics yet.)

One set of the pics is in low lighting the other is with the flash on to give you an idea of how the look in different lighting.

Troops (These guy are paint testers. I didn't have the gun-mettle paint at the time I did them, so the tac. squad should look a little better when I get them done.)

Pleas review and critique. Just don't send the death company after me!

Interesting colour scheme did you paint the blue over a metal base coat?

That was my thought too. It looks metallic.

What paints are you using?

Could you show us some photos of them taken in good, natural light? That would give us a better frame of reference for comments and advice.

Looks like standard hobby paint for models of gundam, valkyries, and other heavy mech models from anime. I've used them a long time ago, but I don't remember the name. I would like to hear the name of the chapter you are creating from this color because that is going to be hard colors to go stealth in. =P

I use Tamiya paints. The models are all plastic so I used no base coat. For the blue Tactical and Terminator I put a layer of metallic blue followed by a layer of clear blue. I also try to let the clear pool in the joints to give it a darker/shadowed look. The other colors I use on the trim and guns is Light Blue, Aluminum, Gunmetal, and one of the bright green(can't remember the name). The green is mostly used for the eyes. The silver guy will be special troops. Pleas keep in mind that the two Tactical guys are just paint testers.

As for the Chapter or codex, I will use the Space Marine and Blood Angle codex because I want to go with a Halo like them. I also like blue, LOL! But the most important thing is that this will be my army for quite a while, so It is give a generic paint scheme.

As for lighting, the first pic. was shot out side when I was working on the captain.

I'm using Tamiya as well, since Citadel stuff is really hard to come by where i come from. The brand doesn't have washes in their line. They do have their paints in either flat or gloss variants. I'm quite sure Ryu no Ten went for the gloss ones here.

Sarroy for the too dark and too bright pics, but I did these in a rush.

Hey there, just a quick comment on your latest set of pictures is that 'breaking up' your colors will make things pop a little better. When you have 'silver on silver' they just blend together and you don't see the cool details as much; you always want to limit your number of colors for cohesiveness but in my opinion if you'd inverted the cloak and backpack I think that would've been a bit sharper (that is, 'captain side' of the cloak is blue and backpack facing silver, with the pack in blue) because the eagle on the chest would stand out a bit better, for example.

go, see and conquer all :P

the minis look good as a satrting point, when you get more comfertable with your painting, id probably recommend investing in a black wash, im still using the old badab black and its a godsend.

First, I say good on you for taking the time to paint your minis and give them some character. Overall I would say you are definitely on the right path, and there is nothing wrong with giving your models a brighter color scheme than is the norm. My first were "regal marines" with deep purples and gold trim, so I totally get going for that.

All that being said, there are a few simple things you can do to make your models look a lot better, and it might even be easier than what you are doing now.

First, I would say that it is always a good idea to base coat your models. I use chaos black primer in the spray can normally, and it takes only a few seconds to coat a squad and then only about five minutes to dry. This will help darken recesses in the model, make paint stick better, and will make colors pop better. You van also use white, but I find that black works better with metallics. Others could easily disagree, and ultimately it is up to personal preference. Still, I would always undercoat.

Next, you should familiarize yourself with two techniques: dry brushing and washing. If you want a quick and dirty paint job that doesn't look half bad, paint your model in its primary color(silver or blue, in this case) then wash it with either a deep blue or black. This will give definition to the contours of the model. When that dries, you can drybrush the rest of the model in a slightly lighter version of the basecoat, either silver or blue here (look up a tutorial, but basically you wipe almost all of the paint off the brush then go over raised ares of the model to impart just a hint of that color).

These techniques are super fast and will give a good look to just about any army. After that you can pick out details. Again, good luck, you're doing better than I was starting out, and much better than my buddy who thought it would be a good idea to paint metallic rainbow marines, though we rarely speak of him anymore...
