New player and a few list questions!

Hey guys,

I have been doing a lot of research on Warhammer 40k in generall and decided to finally take the plunge and buy the game and a full 1750 point army o.o.

Let it be known my local game shop owner loves me

The first list I decided to go with I found off of the SpaceWolves blog for a 1750 GT list :

http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/2011...es-gt-army.html

But after doing a lot of reading here I am interested in going with a Mounted Thunderwolf Lord and his Calvery and taking out the Rune Priest so I can go for a 1850-2k list. Maybe even alter this current list above with the Thunderwolf so I can play at 1500 points.

I want to start winning in my local game shop xD so I can be like YAY I DIDNT JUST BLOW 700$.

My real concern now is if I wanted to go down a route with a Mounted Thunderwolf Lord, should I just buy the Canis Wolfborne model and use him? Or will using that model give me a problem in a tournament setting (I want to play this game competative if I can and actually use the army I build in tournmanets to see how I do)

OR

Should I buy this awesome 70$ wolf set I found in http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=206007 this thread.

Or

Would it be easier to buy plane wolves from GameWorkshop and then which units would I buy to mount on them? I am so new to this it hurts.

My last and final idea would be to stick with the list I have now and just try to work with it. Besides how badass would it be to have a Thundermounted Wolf lord chargin in to battle with a few swings, I would I would be scared if he was coming right for me.

Thanks in advance

Trav

*edit* If I do go down this route and buy the models I was hoping to be able to get the models in a week, two tops. My local game shop tells me if I do use Canis it will take a month to get????? Does that sound right? Also the 70$ wolf set says it will take 4 weeks to get :D makes me sad. So a QUICKER alternative that is tournament legal would be wicked!!

Well first of all, welcome to the fang!

I have to say, that list you linked there resembles the one I use and it has won me a few tournies and events while I was living in Australia. Its a very good all-comers if you ask me, meaning its versatile enough to take on most armies, especially if youre tactically adept

As far as thunderwolves goes, Im pretty sure using the canis model for your wolf lord is alright, especially if you do some conversion work. Ive personally used Njal as a non-named Rune Priest several times, it shouldnt be a problem as long as your opponent is clear what is what.

GW stores seem to frown a little upon using "after market" miniatures and a lot of the tournaments do too, but in friendly games its quite alright. GW hasnt given us much to work with themselves when it comes to making TWC so they cant really blame us hey.

If youre not used to playing wolves I suggest you start of with that GT armylist and get a few games in with them, read a few battlreps from people using similar lists to get a grasp on strategy. Then you can work on your TWC once you grasped the concept of being one of us :D.

Thanks for the warm welcome!!!!

Sweet deal! Thats what I was hoping to hear. When I showed my local shop that list and said THIS IS WHAT I WANT he kinda gave me the o.O look. So I was like "Hey whats wrong" and he goes I will be running this as the only Space Wolves player in his shop and I need to hurry my ass up so he can see it in action. So I am quite excited XD.

Ya I have been doing my reading about "after market" models and tournament use. The ruling on them is just a bit confusing still probably because im new. Knowing me though I will probably end up buying the wolves off game works shops website and adding some regular wolves to it. Probably just have to find a wicked model to make as the Mounted Wolflord xD. But Canis just looks to awesome to pass up. I might just pick him up then down the road as a shelf piece until I can make a list where I can find him somewhat viable.

Actually before I dropped my CC on the order one of the players in the shop let me proxy 1000 points of the GT list and I have been practicing with him. As I get my models done we will be going up the list to 1200-1500-1750 so I can get the hang of it. I will say tho having 2 longfang packs shoot at individual targets made me squirm in excitement......

Besides they are better imo then the Tau army my buddy tried to get me to play o.O and he wins tournaments in the shop there. SIGH HE HAS NOT MET MY WOLVES YET!!!!!

But thanks for the hastey response I am so excited to start kicking ass with these guys you dont even know

First, welcome to The Fang.

As for this quote, there are no GW "wolf" models that compare to the expected size of a Thunderwolf Mount other than the Canis model. A goblin wolfrider or lotr warg or chaos warhounds are all too small to plop a space marine on. Closest I've seen in the GW product line (without using Canis) are the Ogre Kingdom mournfangs or maaaaybe a rhinox.

Hello Brother,

So basically just buy 4 Canis models and go to town and change his head out and give him awesome weapons. I thought they would be to small because just the look of Canis is so Pronouncing. Sighhhh my gf is gonna shoot me when 4 of them come in the mail xD

Hehe I like your excited enthusiasm!

It was the same for me, I lived in Fremantle, WA and I was the only one running my wolves like that. My first great success with the wolves was when I switched to this list, at this king of the hill style tournament, i.e. if you win, you stay on the table. I was on my table from opening till closing! Thats when I knew I had found my calling.

Ah yeah, what wulfenbane said is true, it is possible to use the mournfangs from the ogre kingdoms boxes to convert up a big thunderwolf, they would have no qualms about using them in tournies as they are GW made. Most people who field fenrisian wolves use the goblin wolves too as they require no conversion work at all if youre not too fuzzed.

Ya man I have to be all pumped about it. After I tried a thousans points and kicked ass I was like ITS ON RAWR!

Especially when the owner at my local shop said I will be the only wolf player there, that makes it that much more exciting. Hopefully I can win and claim some territory we shall see though hehe.

If any of you guys are from New Jersey I will be playing in the Bergen County area.

The mournfangs sound like a good idea I have to go see what they look like, I also thought about the goblin riders but my shop told me they come with the goblins mounted on them?? I didnt think that sounded right. I also couldnt find a good image to see if the wolves actually kept up in size to what I expected them to be.

But its great as soon as my army is done I will post a few pics and be like OH YA CRITIZE MY Army! Well my gf and me are going in on it. She is building and painting it. I will be winning with it or she will shoot me. My other issue is my rune priest is taking forever to get ughhhh :D.

Gimmie 2 weeks and I will so have battle reports and going BROTHERS AID ME IN MY CAUSE

Do not buy 4x Canis models...

At $50 a pop and the amount of hacking you'll have/want to do to them to make them look like 4 completely different TWC models, you may as well sculpt your own.

The mournfang models are over here and are roughly the same size as Canis' Fangir mount, if not slightly smaller (which is good, since in the fluff, Fangir is supposedly one of the biggest ever seen). As for their look, they have hooves and more feline-esque faces, but are great for converting. Plus you get 2 mounts for 3/4 of what you'd pay for 1 Canis model ($37 in the states).

As for goblin wolfrider mounts, you can buy the wolves separately here which net you 5 wolves for $15 though I personally prefer the chaos warhounds found here. You get 5 more "wolves" for only $10 more and they make fairly decent looking fen. wolves even unconverted if painted right, not to mention they have more dynamic poses and a more polished sculpt (the wolfrider mount sculpt is about as old as the company). Otherwise, they're easy to convert and a guide to do so is here.

Thanks for this info! The mournfangs dont look half bad. I would just hack off those tusk though xD.

Thanks for the guide, I will read it over in the morning when I wake up.

As of right now im super stoked my shop called me like an hour and a half ago (11:00pm EST) and said my rune priest was in!!!!!!!!! I so ran out in my pj's to go get him. Metal model looks so badass. I just need to wash him so I can prime him tomorrow ^_^

The tusks are glued on separately, so no need to hack.

I can't remember if the RP comes with both plasma pistol AND bolt pistol, but if you can manage, don't bother modelling him with the plasma. Unless for whatever reason you don't trust passing your psychic test (such as playing against that one Eldar farseer that makes you roll 3D6) then you will 99.5% of the time use a psychic shooting power. Or.. magnets are your friend.

The RP I picked up actually came with what looks like a bolt pistol and a frost axe. I dunno what I al going to do because the weapons are made out of metal ^_^. I am debating if I should just hack away a fist from my plastic bits and stick that on because I know the RP does not have a close combat weapon

Aye what Kami said is true. Runic Weapons are good because they are basically a force weapon that can nullify your enemys psychic power AND wound daemons on a 2+

As far as the goblin riders go, yes the box comes with goblins but they are not attached to the wolves, with the box I bought I made the fenrisian wolves and the goblins I turned into gretchen and sold cheapish to my friend to put on his stompa ;)

The runepriest you picked up is fine. Rulewise he has a runic weapon, which can really be whatever close combat weapon on the model you want. Meaning there is no optical difference between runic, power or frost weapon.

Welcome to the aett!

So I can shoot and stab!? That would be awesome, I really didnt want to have to remove his weapon because the axe just looks to good on him. I just hope my gf is one hell of a painter xD.

But thanks everyone for all the great input I am so pumped to play it hurts.

Too bad you live in New Jersey, would be cool to game against ya

We can always do it via skype! xD what a pain in the ass that would be but still lmao.

I can see it now YOUR GUY WAS NOT IN RANGE, DAMMIT MAN HE JUST MOVED 6in SHOT AND ASSAULTED. BUT YOUR ACROSS THE WORLD!

We can definatly sit down and discuss strats and stuff :HQ: and you can train me so when my army is done I can win IN YOUR HONOR!

At our local shop we have a player who used to work for GW's and I hear when he comes and plays he just whipes the floor clean...... so I want to be THAT GUY who walks in like the silent stranger and goes YOUR MINE! GET OVER HERE!!!

(two completly different movies but you get the idea)

I also revamped my list in the past 24 hours, I am removing the Laser Cannons off my razorback and putting Twin Linked assault cannons, I found a wicked deal for them on ebay $3 a set xD

Hah, funny idea, but i dont think that would work when your army is over there and mine is here ?? xD

In my honour you say! Nah but Im happy to oblige with my tactical wisdom, that Ive gained by whoopping ass these past few years!

Hmm about those assault cannons, I think youre going to find that youll need those low AP lascannons in some games, us wolves dont get a lot of long-range tank-busting weaponry.

You can always make the part which holds the weapons on the razorback, loose so you can just switch when you want.

Well, you know my name so feel free to PM me whenever!

So this leaves me to make the arguement Take the assualt cannons and blow up tanks with the 8 long fangs with ML I have.......Or take the Lasor Cannons and blow up the ground troops with the 8 long fangs

Well, play a few games and youll figure out what seems to be the best loadout for your own personal style. The long fangs are meant to be versatile, firing at troops, monstrous creatures or tanks , depending what youre facing. Having a razorback with lascannons is almost never going to be a bad choice, i think youll find out. Its never bad to have the option of going assault cannon I guess, but youll already have plenty of anti infantry, but not so much with low AP, infact, unless you go with a landraider, your razorback might be your only AP 1 gun.

Again, go try everything and find out how it works! 3 bux for an alternative weapon aint bad at all!

I'm not sure I understand. Did you think you needed to include a ccw or that RPs are not suppose to have ccw?

The axe qualifies as a runic weapon, which is the signature weapon for rune priests. Like other force weapons, it wounds daemons on a 2+ but above that, it nullifies psychic powers on a 4+ if in 24" range of the bearer.
