Tournament Display Board

So i decided to finally make a display board to take along to tournaments. i had to think over what size and theme i wanted for the army, and i decided to make it for a 1500pt army list, in a black sand theme. so here's the pics!

first i decided on a 20" x 16" display. i did a mock up of where i wanted the models to sit, using discarded pluck foam pieces to guess the general height of the models in the back:

Once i was satisfied, i made the cliff line for the rear models:

Next same cutting out the counter sunk holes for the models to rest in so they wouldn't be bumped around out of formation, and basecoated with a tube of black acrylic paint:

Then came adding the black sand:

And then i had this:

Nice display board. How long did that take you?

from design to production, bout 2....2 and a half days, all working days, so probably 1 day off would've done it too. the longest part is cutting the foam with a coam cutting tool, because if you try to force it, you gunk up the cutter with the melting foam and then it stops cutting cause its too busy trying to melt itself clean.

Hey, Alex here, love me a bit of scenery I do, where'd you get the black sand from?

The black sand i bought at a craft store in Canada called Michael's. it was in the florist section along with all the green styrofoam to make fake flower displays. you get a hefty 2lb bag for $5, and there's a variety of colors to pick.

i was going for a sandy desert that's been turned black from heavy radiation from some event that happened a few centuries before my chapter came there to do battle. yea, i play Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas alot when i'm not working on my hobby <_< it's rubbed off a little.

for anyone that wants to attempt this, i would say to make sure you pin your foam in place with toothpicks right after you glue pieces together; the glue just doesnt hold well enough on its own; the tooth picks are mandatory. i cant stress this enough. pin with toothpicks. or your cliffs 'will' fall off. not might. not possibly. they will. i had used a white glue thats meant for this specific foam, and even that didnt hold it together without the toothpicks too well.
