Deathwatch Squad part 4/5

Rogan

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, this is Sergeant Raphael of the Blood Angels, now in the service of the Deathwatch.

Painted this guy for a painting... well, it's actually not a duel, since two other people are participating in it, so I'll call it triel. Nah, sounds too much like being convicted for a felony... Okay, a battle, then.

This is my first (serious) attempt at painting black.

Hope you like 'em.

@ zxyogi:

Thank you! It's quite what I wanted to achieve. I never liked most people's black simply because their extremely harsh highlighting. That's why I wanted to finally try it out myself.

@ Grimdarkness:

Thanks!

@ Ageis:

Thank you.

I will post a tutorial soon; in January at the latest.

@ Thaltus:

Thanks a lot, but to be honest, I'm not too keen on using washes.

Sometimes, yes, to add a slightly different hue, but never more than that.

But I can understand why you might think of the DW being too greyish; I felt the same way. That's why I wanted this miniature to have some jewelry and the likes; just to make the "bright" details stand out against the armour's darkness.

@ Volfen:

Thanks! Usually, the faces are my favourite parts, too. However, seeing this one, I feel that I still need to improve these quite a lot. It just doesn't stand up to the rest of the miniature - at least in my opinion.

@ WheresWadders:

Thanks! Unfortunately, it's not exactly what I wanted to do. Sure, the lightning does look good (if my girlfriend says so, it must be true :)), but at first I wanted the sword too look as if pure and somewhat liquid energy were running through the blade. Maybe a little like a glass sword filled with water and glowing on the inside - perhaps because I played a lot of Final Fantasy X of late. :-D

@ everyone: thanks for your comments, it's really awesome to get that much feedback for a "simple" 8 hour miniature painted with a derivation of my basic techniques. Also, I will post the link to the tutorial in this thread as soon as it's done. If need be, I will also post it in German. ;-)

Don't be too quick to dismiss the use of washes here Rogan, or even flat out inking. If there was one thing I'd change on this mini it'd be to make it just atocuh more black and a touch less grey. The two best example for me are the backpack, which looks dark gray rather than black with all that highlighting, and the thighs. The thighs look grey because the ribbing between armour is a more 'true' black, the backpack looks grey because of the highlighting.

A simple wash of Badab Black will tone down the grey just a fraction and ensure the whole mini, not just most of it, looks black and will soften the transitions between the blacks/greys a little too in place like the backpack and where the ribbing is. An alternative is to paint the ribbing another colour, metallic silver is the usual, to offer contrast with the black so it looks nice and black.

I used inking, black washes and metallic ribbing on my RG to make sure they look really black, but it's a personal preference as much as anything I guess.

@ SCC:

Well, I agree it might make a great difference. Still, as I said, I strongly dislike washes and have used them about four to five times during my entire painting "career" - once even during painting this miniature, but only to give the blade's parry a different hue. Thanks anyway for the advice :)

Also, I think you'll be happier with the next miniature, then, since it IS a little darker. I changed my black recipe, causing this:

Unfortunately, I killed my best brush, which resulted in rather thick highlights... Well. Doesn't matter.

Next up: a Black Templar!

I love it - firstly how did you find/force the hammer like that? and secondly only a nitpick here but I feel the 'metallic' hand (right as you look at the pic) is the wrong way up, purely personal taste, I think if it was it'd give a more 'combat-ready' feel, as if he's hefting the hammer - either way it's a great model

keep up the good work - can't wait to see the docile mildly psychopathic templar :D

@ Russ Brother 92: Thanks!

I had to make it - used a Wolf Guard hammer's head and the two-handed axe from the Space Wolves pack sprue. A little cutting and trimming and drilling and here it is :)

The rune is, if I'm not mistaken, from the same hammer's power supply cables, cut into shape and then glued to the ring at the hammer's butt.

About the arms... Yeah, it's a little off, I have to confess that. I wanted his pose to resemble the barbarian hero's from Avatars of War. :/

@ Kisada:

Thank you, brother, I will! I am currently translating the tutorial I made - unfortunately, the pictures I took aren't really top notch... :(

@ Mr. M:

Thanks ^^

Yeah, I can imagine he's sorta p1553d off everytime he gets too close to aliens preying on stuff HE wanted to hunt and eat :)

Here's the latest addition to the squad, Black Templar brother Valbrecht.

Hope you like him as much as you did the others!

I like it :( ... LOVE IT! :) haha although methinks you should lighten up the skull on his shoulder pad - it looks too dark for my liking tbh.

other than that it's brilliant, again you've captured imo the essence of templars, knightly, emotionless and having brilliant movement.

@ Russ Brother 92:

Thanks a lot - I thought a lot about what to do to make it fit the chapter's individual character and style. Glad you like it! ;)

@ Marshal2 Crusaders:

Sure - here y'are ;)

@ blackbabyjesus:

Thanks! Actually, I'm happier with this one than I am with the others. This time, I feel I haven't messed up as much as before ^^

@ Dorns_fist:

Thank you :)

Sorry, no CF in this squad. I'll add some Fists into the next DW squad (the shooty one), but for now, it'll contain a White Scar and a Raven Guard in addition to the ones I already completed.

@ Bigger-than-Jesus:

Yeah, thanks for the crits ;)

@ keith:

The major problem with the sword was that I underestimated its tendency to... form back into its original shape. oO

I really should have, as BtJ pointed out, straighted it in hot water... Well, too late now. Thanks a lot!

And, as I wrote in the reply to Dorns_fist's comment: sorry, no Sallie this time. But I sure will add one to the next squad!

-------------------

Here's the tutorial.

Sorry for the pic quality - I have no idea why these turned out so... so... meh. oO

I will replace them in the "near" future, though. You won't have to wait to the year 40,000, I promise :)

Step 1:

Prime the model with Chaos Black Spray. It's got to be totally black, so, if need be, just paint all the recesses black.

I guess you won't need any pictures here, since he who needs advice on how to prime a miniature should not be painting at all :P

Step 2:

Basic colour. Mix Chaos Black and Adeptus Battlegrey (which I will refer to as "ABG" in the future, since that's not as annoying to write) about 80/20. Apply this first layer and basic colour to everywhere except for the recesses of the armour - in other words, where armour plates connect or you'd find shadows. Recommended brush size: 0.http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/8290/step1c.jpg

Step 3:

First highlight. Draw a line of 33/33/33 ABG/Chaos Black/Codex Grey around the edges of the armour, some 1 mm (1/25th of an inch, if I'm not mistaken) thick. Don't paint into the recesses, as this will ruin the depth this recipe is meant to create.

Recommended brush size: 0.

Step 4:

Final highlight. Mix Chaos Black/Codex Grey 50/50 and edgebrush it to the most exalted edges of the model.

Recommended brush size: 0.

Let me know if you also need a tutorial for the tabard :)

Good question, to be honest. I had one in my bitzbox that was cut into shape already...

I guess it was the gun holding arm from the pair of arms that is holding the gun a little upwards, giving the gun an angle of about 30° or so.

Then, I cut up the top part of the area connecting with the torso, so I could glue the arm almost horizontally onto it. After carefully placing the shield (without any modification) so that the arms... "wristband" nicely fits into the hole of the shield, I glued the shield-holding hand from the assault squad sprue to it (this one). Then I simply added two pieces of plastic card to either side of the shaft it holds and there he goes with that brand new storm shield of his.

Of course, some filling of the gap between the torso and the original fitting part of the arm is required... But that's an easy job.

Also, make sure you leave enough space for the shoulder armour!
