Using Necron Abyss

Recommended Posts

I've been using Necron Abyss as my basecoat for all my Night Lords so far and I've never had a problem with this until now. I recently ran out of Necron Abyss so I went to the store and bought more. When I got home and started painting, I noticed that it's extremely light, much more like mordian blue or enchanted blue even. I tried shaking it like crazy but that did nothing. I even went and bought a couple more today but had the same problem. It seems like there is more of this lighter blue color in the paint jars than the dark Necron Abyss color. Has anyone else had this problem and if you did how did you correct it?

The 'ball bearing' method (Read: using a sinker to help mix, as mentioned) is a good method, but I don't think that's the problem in your case. Try just using a toothpick to mix the paint down at the bottom of the bottle. If it feels liquid, it is. If it feels thick and 'heavy' at the bottom, the paint has settled as people are suggesting. If it has settled, then the paint should match better once you've got it properly mixed, whatever method you end up using.

But, I think you've been bitten by the 'new paint supplier' bug, especially if the bottle you are replacing is quite old. To be fair, this might be the supplier and not directly GWs fault, but the outcome is the same. The paint and/or supplier has changed, and they have tried to match the paint colour, but haven't gotten as close as they should have to the original. If this is the case, the only thing you can do is 'tweak' the colour yourself. What you have is the 'new' Necron Abyss, and will need to get used to it.

As I said, it might not even be something directly under GWs control. Could be a change at the supplier/bottler, or GW may have made a conscious choice with supplier or just the paint. It's hard to say. Either way, it's their product (Yes Citadel is an extension of GW) and they reserve the right to make changes they see fit and/or can't avoid. That's not to say they shouldn't take back extra bottles you bought, but there won't be much they can do to get the colour you want.

Also, that said, I could be a defect, but the chances are slimmer than it just being an 'adjustment' to the paint. Doesn't hurt to find out.

Yeah if I'd only had one or two previously I might have believed that but I'd bought and used 6-7 pots in the past so I know what the color is supposed to look like :) and thanks Subtle.

Edit: Called GW but they haven't changed suppliers so I'm not sure. I guess I'll just have to buy some more Necron Abyss and make sure it's all dark blue in the pot before i buy it <_<

Hey, Alex here, have you tried adding some black to the new pot? That might bring it back to the colour your after, I know it's a hastly but if you mix up a small tester and get it right, then you could do a large batch to cover your army! Or the possibility of mabe doing smaller layers to allow the black to show through underneath? The second option is a bit longer to do but will save you having to perfect a mixture. Just throwing the ideas out their.
