Thunderwolves or Skyclaws?

First of all, YAY, SPACE WOLVES! I got about 2800 points of Wolves off of my friend for free. Not one buck out of my wallet.

I'm working on a 1500 list based on the stuff I have. It's basically a Wolf lord, 20 Grey Hunters in rhinos, 2 squads of Long Fangs, and a Vindicator. That brings me to exactly 1200 points with all the upgrades, and I'm debating on what to spend the last 300 points on. I could go with 5 TWC, and a Thunderwolf for the Lord so he can accompany them, but my problem is that if the Lord joins them the TWC lose their 12-inch assault range. Not a big fan of that. The alternative is to jump pack the Lord and have him roll with 10 Skyclaws. What do you think? TWC tend to draw TONS of fire, and without storm shields I'll probably die turn 2 at the latest, but Skyclaws die just as easily. There is the same number of wounds for each unit, though a direct hit pie plate from a Vindicator will knock the lights out of both. Hmmmmm......

ANY SUGGESTIONS? What would you go with? Of course I could screw both of them and go with a Rune Priest and another Vindicator.......

Why dont you?

and for suggestions: do you have any other models?and what are they?

Well, ok... Heh heh. The reason I didn't was because I like the Space Wolves fluff WAY too much to go boring old competitive with them. I'd much rather run a fluffy list with wolves than a ridiculous tailored-to-win list. Which explains the Wolf Lord. All I see in Wolves nowadays are Rune Priests. It's getting rather stale.

Well I have (only) 8 Blood claws, 3 Whirlwinds, A LOT MORE grey hunters (but no more rhinos), a Dreadnought, and 3 heavily converted Wolf Guard terminators (I love these models the most out of everything I got). Plus a Land Speeder, some Space Marine bikes, and a Wolf Priest. Most of this stuff is unpainted which is really nice....

Why don't TWC have a 12'' assault if a TWLord joins them? He has it so he wouldn't slow them down. Plus, TWC can take Storm Shields so if that's the hold up, drop one and get a shield or two.

If you decide to go Skyclawing (which is fun) then I'd go with a Wolf Priest with Jump Pack instead of a Wolf Lord. He compliments them more.

In regards to the two units, you never hear someone claiming their Skyclaws did amazing and ripped things to shreds, easily making up for their cost.. I'm sure people have said it on occasion, but not in the same volume of comments with TWC units. Also, I seldom hear anyone taking a non-special character Wolf Lord in their armies without it being a Thunderwolf Lord. I like the idea of Skyclaws, and there's so much QQ on people claiming how TWCs in 40K are unbelievable (just ask them to explain how any of it is believable), but bottom line, it seems TWC are more overpowered compared to Skyclaws and are seen more often in competitive play.

Should you decide on Skyclaws, however, I fully agree with librisrouge's statement. I couldn't fathom ever taking a BC pack of any variety without a WP.

Option C: Runepriests. Can never have enough. The vindicator is debatable.

Well, I guess I'm not absolutely positively sure, but from my knowledge and interpretation of the Codex a Wolf Lord with a Thunderwolf mount doesn't become Cavalry. He just gets the bonus to his stats. Only beasts and cavalry can assault 12", and the unit would have to abide by the Wolf Lord's assaulting limitations, just like if a Slow and Purposeful character joined a normal unit.

Yeah, I guess so. As I said before, though, I'm making my list more according to fluff and models I like. I have a pretty slick conversion idea in mind for Krom Dragongaze, so I'm making my Wolves from his Great Company.

The wolf lord does become cavalry upon getting his ride, and can no longer join standard packs. In the same way that a Wolf Lord on a bike can move at 12 inches and can turboboost 24 inches, he gains all the movement properties of his mount.

Personally, I would keep the unit fairly small, two thunderwolf and perhaps the lord too, and get another Grey Hunter pack (generally, one Grey Hunter pack per 500 points is fairly sound advice), or a pair of Landspeeders with missles and heavy bolter/Mult Meltas/Flamer and Mult-Melta and invest any remaining points either into a small hunter pack, or back into the thunderwolf pack/Pack of Scouts to go behind enermy lines. 5 guys with a melta gun coming in off the table edge is not only hard to ignore, but really annoying since it's too small to make plans to deal with but big enough a threat that it could tie down or seriously damage one or two units before they deal with it. For 85 points it's a absolute steal for a wildcard unit.

Thing to remember is, if they are shooting at your thunder wolf pack, they are not shooting at anything else, making everyone elses job slightly easier.

Thank you to everyone who gave me some great advice! I've decided to go 2 Thunderwolves and 5 Wolf scouts with a meltagun. Here's the whole list (an overview anyway): Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf, 5 Wolf Scouts, 10 Grey hunters in rhino 2x, 2 Thunderwolves, 6 Long Fangs w/ 5 missiles, 6 Long Fangs w/ 2 las, 3 missiles, Vindicator. With that I have 5 points leftover, which will probably be a Wolf Tail talisman for the Lord. Thanks again!
