My army is in need of a Skjald

I want to include a Skjald in my army. I know I could just have a random unit and for fluff give him no stats and say he is my Skjald but what I was wondering was if I could actually make a custom unit with stats and what they should be if I did. I was thinking along the lines of a IG guardsmen maybe. 4 or 5 plus BS and a 5 or 6 plus WS. IDK about toughness or strength. For special rules I was thinking that if he falls using something like the Bjorn death rules and maybe that if a unit can trace LOS the would get a +1 attack or something because they are trying to stand out so they can play a bigger part in the Skjald's story, maybe that he could be "adopted" by a unit and give them the same benefit if the LOS would be too powerful. As for war gear I would think scouts armor like in Prospero Burns and maybe a plasma pistol. No meltas, grenades or anything though. I mainly play friendly games and I think that if I had good, fluffy and fair stats for the unit I could probably get them to agree to let me use it.What do you guys think?

As cool as the idea is this is not a IG board so no talking about IG rules.

I'm not, I am asking what kind of stats a Skjald would have. A Skjald is not a IG unit I was just thinking that he would have the same kinda stats as one of those units if I used him in game. I didn't think that would be a problem, but if it is please accept my apologies.....

You could use a lone wolf and call it a Skjald. That way you can use him in any game of 40k.

A Skjald committed to dying might not be so good a preserving the GCs sagas :cuss

It's alright, I know that's not what you meant ;)

Yeah, a Skald is just a bard, poet or minstrel from old norse and scandinavian history. In 2nd edition, (as Durfast mentioned) Skalds were the lowest rank of Rune Priest and were only allotted one psychic power (versus a Master who had 4).

Going with SW lore, a skald would be a teller of tales, or keeper of memories. In past editions, this role always fell to Rune Priests, who would recite the history of the Wolves through word of mouth (as was practiced in ancient Scandinavia before the use of recording events in writing). Most recently, in Prospero Burns, it fell to a human that was surgically altered to have the mental faculties to be able to remember the accounts of what he saw and recite them, but I would think this to be a rare circumstance (spoiler)

considering it was known that he was somehow a link to Horus and wanted to use him as bait

. The SW would want a more durable skald to be able to retell their stories.. and actually live long enough - read centuries - to keep track of them.

tl;dr - imo, make your skjald a rune priest. Sans that, I'd only go so far as making him a Chooser, placed on the battle to record the story as it unfolds, perhaps behind a power field, or something impenetrable.

the dreads are the ultimate skjalds, but they have to be told to store. They are the one in charge of keeping the tales alive, thats why in Prospero Burns

He is stored with the dreads in stasis

Sorry i was thinking we where talking the toopers that man the fang her :jaw:
