The Wyrd Wolves

So I'm hoping that in this thread I can start creating some background for my great company and I was hoping for some help from my fellow wolves on here.

I know this is somewhat similar to the first thread I posted, but I wanted to start fresh here. I'll be posting the general backstory that I've come up with thus far as well and having people start helping me fine tune it. Once I've got a good enough foundation for general backstory I'll be starting with actual stories which I'm hoping people will enjoy.

Overall theme: Taking place prior to Logan Grimnar's time as great wolf, A wolf lord reports to the great wolf of the time that his rune priest has been having visions of (blank) The great wolf essentially ends up scoffing at the wolf lord. The wolf lord takes the counsel of his rune priest in high regard as they've known each other for an exceedingly long time and have saved each other on numerous occassions. The wolf lord decided to leave on a search for (blank) with his company never to be heard from again.

Characters: I already have names and personality traits worked out for some characters in the company, and others i just have personality traits and no names.

Svinir Starmane-The WL of my company. I'm thinking of using him as a Ragnar counts as. I like the thought of having an invulnerable save that's essentially a dodge bonus, i feel like it adds to the "fate" theme in the name of the company. Svinir is a wolf lord he leads by example and doesn't ask his men to do anything he wouldn't do or hasn't done himself.

Muninn Stormfang: The rune priest who has been having the visions, he is a long time friend of Svinir and has saved his hide on more than one occassion. Muninn possesses a keen intellect and a very strong will, he was also one of the most talented rune priests at the time of the companies departure.(read as master of the runes)

(blank): Rune priest under Muninn's tutelage

(blank):is the leader of a pack of scouts that Svinir convinced to accompany him. Though scouts are only supposed to answer to the great wolf Muninn could see a certain contempt in (blank)'s eyes for the current great wolf, he recommended Svinir convince him to join them on their journey as he could prove useful. (Blank) trained a small number of Svinir's force to become ruthlessly effective scouts.

(blank): Is one of the wolf guard pack leaders. He has a great level of charisma and leads a small pack of bloodclaws as an aggressive assault force. Clad in power armor and wielding a frost blade and a bolt pistol. Despite his personality outside of battle, he wades into the fray with a ferocity that none in the company but Svinir himself can match.

(Farkas):Leads a 10 man grey hunter pack into battle wielding a power fist and a combi-melta. his twin brother leads another 10 man pack

(Vilkas): see Farkas

(blank): Long Fang squad Sgt.

(blank): Long Fang squad Sgt.

(blank): Dreadnaught

(blank): Dreadnaught

(blank,blank,blank): 3 thunderwolf cavalry.

(Illmarinen): Company Tech Marine. Tends to to the dreadnaughts, TDA, and what little mobile armor the company has.

Where I Need Help: I'll be coming up with stories starting way before this initial turn of events, as well as the adventures of different members of the company after they set off on their quest. The first real issue I'm having is coming up with a specific thing that the company might be chasing after, if you guys can help me decide on this I promise that I'll get to work on the stories. Also if you guys want to help me come up with names for the characters i have listed I'd be honored to have your suggestions.

You could always go with a relic.

Example. Stormfang has visions of the primarch telling him to search for a relic. A relic, that when found will help eventually lead to the Primarchs return, and the Wolftime.

For me anyways, that would be enough to get a Wolf Lord and his company out and on the prowl. At this point let your mind wonder....

Also, welcome to the Fang lad! I see you have some posts under your belt, but I believe this is our first encounter! May your blade stay wet with the blood of your enemies and your drinking horn never run dry! :D

Much Thanks, I had the idea of a relic but my knowledge of lore isn't that great at the moment, any specific relics that are known to exist but aren't found?

You could always play it off like this.

Stormfang has a vision. The vision is of the Primarch telling him that a relic from the days of old must be recovered for his return. But before he can tell him what it is, the vision is cut short (Chaos suppressing Leman Russ's message).

Stormfang then tells Svenir about his vision, and they take it before the Great Wolf. The Great Wolf, and many others are very doubtfull to begin with, but then even more so when they are told that they wont even know what they are looking for! Why should we send and entire Great Company out to search for something that we dont even know what it is, all based on a dream this Rune Priest had? <is the thinking of the Great Wolf and other Wolf Lords.

Against their decision, the Wolf Lord gathers his company and they embark on their quest into the void of space and time, searching for something that will hopefully bring the return of their primarch, and herald the Wolftime.

At least, that's how I'd play it.

I'm having trouble understanding the hierarchy.

For starters, even though a Rune Priest is assigned to a company in an advisory role, in the Fang the rune priests as a whole council the Great Wolf, with a lead rune priest (atm Njal) serving as the go-to guy for matters of the wyrd.

So if this rune priest, Muninn, had a dream, he would first go to the head RP (and/or fellow RPs of similar status) to try and confirm his dreams as something more than. Should his fellow RP brothers give it enough credence, then the head guy would liaison with him as they spoke with the Great Wolf.

For Muninn to go to Svinir regarding his dream, imo, would come after all other avenues were closed and his theory rejected, so he'd be seeking an ally to believe him. The Wolf Lord could have other reasons to believe him, also. It could be that the Great Wolf is newly installed and Svinir felt that he was better suited for the role and/or their was animosity between them as they climbed the ranks. Whatever the case, Svinir could be putting his faith in Muninn out of spite for the Great Wolf rejecting Muninn, hoping to find something that would show the Great Wolf's position is undeserved in an attempt to impeach him from office, so to speak. Something like this could help drive a story with more political and dramatic backgrounds, other than "We both believe! We'll weather this journey together, for truth and justice!" Should the Wolf Lord have ulterior motives that aren't revealed, it could give the stories more flavor.

To break up this hierarchy, I think something along the lines of Svinir and Muninn not have access to the Great Wolf and other Rune Priests. Perhaps they were already on campaign and the dream was too urgent to return to the Fang for council, etc.

Also.. Farkas and Vilkas? lol. Overall, I like the direction of this and can't wait to see the stories start rolling.

*EDIT* - It didn't occur to me until re-reading that you have Muninn as "Master of the Runes". That's the head RP position, right? Regardless, I still think he'd confer with his brother RPs first, Great Wolf second, and Wolf Lord last, if the dream occurred in the Fang.

Russ's cod piece is rumored to have been spotted on the head of some greenskin warlord.... Go get em lad ..

Brother Mjollner...

Mjollner, thanks, i'll definitely keep that in mind >_>. And WulfenBane, I wasn't aware of that hierarchy, and i meant master of the runes as in the game term. (Able to use 2 psychic powers per turn.) The second option sounds little better, the already being out on a campaign thing sounds pretty viable, i have kind of kept the political angle out of it because i don't know enough about the 40k universe as a whole to delve into that just yet. maybe later on i'll expound on it when i know more, but for now probably not so much.

and yes vilkas and farkas (they are werewolves after all ;)

how about a shard of his sword that was impaled in a daemon and broke and is still embedded in the essences of the daemon. Thus having some sort of power over him thats keeping Russ from doing what he is doing.

This doesn't have to be lore, it could have happened when he fought his way in to the eye.

No, it's just a senior RP, Njal is still the head and he has all the powers :D

No, it's just a senior RP, Njal is still the head and he has all the powers ;)

Not necessarily. Unless it says somewhere in the 3E codex (which I don't have on me), no where in either the 5E or 2E codeces does it mention how long Njal has been in service, let alone the head of the Rune Priests. According to Wyrdwolf, this backstory will pre-date Logan, who has been a Space Wolf for only 700 years. It would be easy to assume that Njal came afterward, since the only mention of someone older than Logan (excluding the dreadnoughts) is Ulrik.
