DIY Loyalist/Renegade/Chaos/2nd 11th Legion Gene-seed

Take this with a pinch of salt guys and gals, I don't want anyone busting a vessle over non-cannon fluff etc.

 

So linking with this thread here's the idea I've been playing with.

 

I'll not go into much here, only the geneseed issue.

 

 

The Bastards of Orphar

 

To justify the chapter name in hopes it won't get taken off the forum:

 

The culture of the homeworld is such that there is no form of social coupling. All adults are fathers and mothers. One big angry family.

 

Knowledge of gene-seed witheld/lost (ally against writers block needed) 21st Founding??

 

Almost immediatly after their creation the homeworld was besieged by a Thousands Sons fleet.

Myterious fleet of unknown origin appears in system. Unknown fleet destroys/routs Thousand Sons and diables B of Orphars ships.

Unknown fleet withdraws. B of Orphar attempt to pursue, fail.

Found at the last known position of the unknown fleet: A small vox buoy, not more than a meter across. Two symbols painted on the side of the buoy:

An aquilla beside a three headed hydra.

 

Dum dum duuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.

 

B of Orphar humiliated. Angry. Confused. Not unlike angsty gothic 14 yr old. Pursue Alpha Legion relentlessly with no other purpose. Aim to capture someone with answers.

 

 

So, obvious plot hole: No knowledge of gene-seed. Need a viable reason. Was playing with: Took hundreds of years for the Chapter to actually come to fruition for (insert reason here) during which time an intern accidently shreaded the folder with all the records in it. Again.

 

Why it could work: Doesn't point directly to Chaos, but the Alpha Legion know something. Might be their seed, might be mixed, might be Novus, might be II or XI legion seed, who knows?! Thats the beauty of it.

There's a protagonist an antagonist a motivator and a goal.

 

All the pieces are here, I need a fluff hero and a hundred drafts....

First up I would change the name. For an official chapter title it doesn't ring true. I see what you are aiming for but it is a little 'out of universe.' why not try having an official name and a common name?

 

Something like Helican Preatorians; colloquially known as the 'besterds of Orphar' because of X, Y and Z?

 

That might get you out of trouble, what with the swears and that! I changed the spelling to besterds as well, fluff often removes actually swearing or changes it around a little too.

 

Or you can call them what you like!

 

Edit: maybe move the to LA? You should get loads of help there?

Regardless of whether or not you use the word in it's non-swearing guise, it's not really appropriate. There are no examples in-universe of such names and, not to put too fine a point on it, there are users on this site which aren't of the age of consent. The idea that all adult men are called 'father' and all adult women are called 'mother' is good for an insight at the culture of the homeworld but it cannot justify the name use, as the name is an issue outside of the in-game universe. I'll echo Hephaesteus in recommending a name change.

Like I said, I see how it works. You are of course entitled to call your chapter whatever you want. It can be seen in several ways, obviously, to give an air of bad assery as well as an accurate view of their recruitment.

 

The 'of Orphar' part I have no problem with at all and it does fit well with other chapter names.

 

I think, from my point of view, it just seems a little crass for a marine chapter. For one of only a thousand chapters in the whole imperium, of the holy Emperor's angels astartes; it seems a little 'off' to be calling them the illegitimate sons of Orphar. Again, to me, the high lords (or whoever decides such things as chapter names when they are formed) would be unlikely to use a term; that while accurate; is more often an insult and not really a beacon of hope and virtue that they perhaps hope for. It seems a little more to me like a hard as nails imperial guard unit name for grizzled humans.

 

That is only my opinion, and you can totally disregard it. They did, after all, call a chapter 'space sharks.' (until it was reconned to Latin for 'space sharks'!

 

I was just trying to make it fit a little better to me. I could see it as a secondary name spoken in less endearing terms by guard allies/other chapters/founding chapters that they take on and use it with pride. If they have high tailed it and abandoned their home world to chase shadows, leaving the home world open to attack, you could see the general population finding it appropriate to call them it. Like I said with bringing the alpha legion into it on the other thread to validate use of traitor geneseed, you can do what you want. I was just trying to make it feel better to me in game and fluff terms.

 

I hope this comes across ok, I am not trying to tell you how or what you have to do, just adding my own thought to the process.

I wasn't trying to force the word itself. I was trying to re-inforce the fact that I am not attempting to be offensive.

I'd suggest reading, or browsing thru the DIY guide stickied at the top of the liber Asartes forum. that should help in fleshing out your chapter without out much backlash.

 

On a different note. _ of Orphar, just the word "orphar", it to simular to the word "orphan". And if thats the point your trying to bring out into your DIY chapter than that's ok. But if you think about it in the grimdark universe i.e. WH40K ... who cares your a orphan. The Emperor fathered test tube babies and lost them. Not good paternal forthcoming if your gather that much, Second the "orphans" were then scatter far- and beyond, and then later found sarogate family/ society to adapt to, and to eventully raise up from. Thirdly, and most importantly a Marine is first born into the world they inhabit from a family i.e (mother- father) they then raise/ abandon them to maturity, then a "sky warrior" will come down an pluck this potential, and train him, submit him, teach him, and finally indoctornate them to be a proud warrior of the imperium. But not before exsanguinating them of their forefathers blood, and transfusing them with there new organs, and blood stock of "X" chapter. Hence becoming the "blood" son of that patriarch/ leader. So to recap Orphan= who cares. possible traitor gene seed= getting popular, and anoying at the same time. (read the LA DIY rules first) And with out futher adu I bid you good day.
