Stuck on how to paint my guys

Hey guys. So Im stuck on how to paint my guys. Currently the only scheme im somewhat good at painting is just too bright for me. Almost pushing the Baby blue armor from the codex/box art. And the few ways Ive tried to tone it down, the models just dont look "finished" ya know.

Ive even contemplated to switching to a gray-grey scheme instead of blue-grey.

The biggest problem im having is After I do these "test" schemes, im going to have to go back and strip the the test minis so they can be painted whatever scheme I decide on. I hate stripping paint...

Any suggestions? I really want to paint right now, but Im just not pleased with anything I do. Any recipe suggestions?

I either want a dark gritty blue-grey or a dark gritty gray-grey.

Gah, im so confused and irritated right now.

For me I go for a mid gray - black undercoat, add solid base coat of codex gray, wash with badab black, then paint on the codex gray again leaving the recesses with the wash. Highlight if you want to with fortress grey. If you want to go darker (the gritty darker look) then try swapping the codex gray out with the adeptus battle gray.

the method if far from arty or realistic but it gives a clean, 'robust' finish which could look rather good in the darker shade.

Have a look at the link in the signature below if you want to see an example of the mid gray...

hope it helps,

best of luck

Hail Brother!

I just skipped through your blog to find some of your models painted and found you did not joke about pushing the blue. I recommend mixing Asurmen Blue and Badab Black 50/50 and go over one of the already done models to see if the outcome is to your liking. It could be a very simple solution to your problem, so if I was you I'd give it a try. That way you could avoid too much fuzz. It's the one easy option I see for you to achieve a more gritty blue-grey scheme.

Personally I'm from the grey-grey fraction. You can see some of my guys in my album here in the fang. They're done on black primer with Adeptus Battlegrey for a base and highlighted with Codex- and Fortress Grey.

Hope that helps.

So actually I got to toying around and started painting a mini up in grey-grey...and by Russ I like it so far. I will post the finished model up next to the scheme I have been doing and let you guys decide, but I do believe I have found my scheme :)
I know the dilemma you are having with this one as I've done both grey/grey and baby blue in the past and I'm currently in the process of building a new wolves force from scratch but can't decide which way to go on colour. I find grey/grey a bit flat but it does work for gritty very well. Vallejo Grey Blue 70943 gives a nice medium grey/blue lighter than fenris grey and shadow grey I'd say it was close to shadow grey in tone but it's not as light as the GW codex baby blue. True baby blue is a mix of 50/50 shadow grey and SW grey with some of the heavy metal painters using a 1:1:1 shadow/space wolves/kommando khaki mix.
