Stormraven with Chapterhouse bits

So here's my 95% finished Stormraven, with the TRU-scale extension kit tacked on. I fully magnetized it, and replaced the turret with a chin mount, because even the Forgeworld Razorback turret option screwed up the "babyhawk" profile of the newly extended bird. With the chin mount, I daresay the SR looks more aggressive, and it makes more sense anyway since it's a delivery and ground attack vehicle primarily anyway.

I made the chin mount by using the Landspeeder mounting bit (got a bunch cheaply from ebay), drilling a hole in the Stormarven's floor, and slapping a magnet into it. The guns rotate 360 degrees, and I imagine when it's time to open the assault ramp, they would move back and retract to get out of the way, or something. I don't know, the wizard did it. If you turn the bird over, the mounting hole doesn't look terribly pretty, but while on the stand, you can't really see anything. I also slapped some magnets on each set of turret guns and magnetized the cowlings as well, so I can reuse the same set with all three weapon options.

I chose not to mount the dreadnought harness. Since the SR has so much room in it now, I figure the dread will ride inside of it instead of stuck to the outside.

Here are the pictures. I'm still waiting for Chapterhouse to send me the custom Rhino doors with the dragon head on them...

First, all the trimmings and magnetized bits removed.

Next, head-on shot with Lascannon and Multimelta mounted. I know the magnets on the cowlings look way shiny, but I figure after they are painted black, they won't be quite as conspicuous.

Next the anti-MEQ/anti-infantry config with the Cyclone ML and an assault cannon, I was kind of worried about the CML looking good, but it fits like a glove, surprisingly.

Finally the "melt your FREAKIN FACE off" config, with Multimelta and Plasma Cannons.

I didn't take any pictures with the heavy bolters mounted, but you can imagine what it looks like, it's not a terribly exciting gun. In hindsight I somewhat regret gluing on the sensor module (where multimelta, CML or HB plug in), I could probably monkey around with magnets there as well and make it swivel, but I was too lazy.

All in all I think the bird looks great, it is HUMONGOUS though, makes my Land Raider look small. People will love shooting at it.

P.S. I bumped the left Hurricane Bolter sponson and didn't notice it until I took the picture already. It doesn't REALLY want to fall off like that.

UPDATE AS REQUESTED.

As you can see everything fits together quite nicely but being very OCD I green-stuffed some seams anyway.

Very nice and I took the same topside approach to mine, though I'm just assuming that the top circular patch where the turret goes is a "pop-up" version and I'll just declare what weapons are carried in my games or use some sort of marker.

Would you mind posting a shot of the underside of the nose with the turrent mounted, but no weapons? I'm curious to see how you did that.

Very good work sir!

That looks great

Ive been looking at the Chapterhouse kit for a while and thought Id get one if I go for the stormraven

Keep posting the pics

Can we also get a shot from the side as they are all at an angle. this will show how the kit lengthens the body

I like the extended version better than the regular one. It looks less like a brick with wings now.

Actually I'm quite happy with it looking like a brick with wings. What I really didn't like was the "flying metal tadpole" look. Flying bricks are very space marine-ish.

I can when I get home, but it's really nothing special. It's a hole with a magnet sunk into it. And an ugly hole at that, I didn't really bother making it neat.

Oh, don't worry, you get full iPoints (+2) for the execution. I'm just curious as to how it looks. I don't know that I'll do that as I like the slimmer profile and the smooth top (I also left out the engine scoop on the top), but the chin turret is an intriguing idea.

Looks great. My only concern with the chin mounted weaponry is getting called out for modeling for advantage. DO you still measure from the top of the vehicle (the standard mount). Other wise you have added quite a good deal of range to those weapons (the chin mount is further forward and closer to the ground so it probably adds 2-3 inches to the weapon range. Now if you are not going to tourneys its not big deal, but I just thought i would ask because I think it looks cool.

I like it.

So much in fact I might use this kit as a basis for my Stormhawks (Age of the EMPEROR YEAH).

And I like the chin mounted weapons system, makes me think of real gunships like the Apache where its slaved to the gunner's head.

That's a really good idea! might have to do that...

I gotta say, it does look a good deal more like a baby Thunderhawk with the Chapterhouse add-ons.

What's the aft section look like? It was always the one concern I had with the add-ons.

Also, I think leaving off the turret and going with the chin-mount drastically improved the model's overall aesthetic. Well done.

You just have to ignore the fact that the chin mount is going to have the forward assault ramp crash down on top of it. It needs to be set further back.

I figured if this was the real thing, there would be a hydraulic system that automatically moves the turret back and retracts it when landing gear deploys. That's the only time you'd go out the front - for the Shadow Skies, I imagine the Marines pile out the back or the side doors. If I had more GS and plasticard skillz, spare bits and wasn't quite as lazy, maybe I would've even modeled it. But I am not terribly concerned about how the belly of the bird looks, it'll always be on the flying stand, and the front ramp is glued shut.

I added some more pictures to the first post. I think this thing is pretty much done at this point, just need those replacement doors and a couple of bling pieces - namely the dragon braziers that Chapterhouse offers. It'll probably get painted in about one-two months or so.

There is an easy work around. The underside has those ridges on it. You could say that some of them are rails for allowing the turret to slide back and you could paint them to show that. A couple of bits of cardboard or plasticard placed in a line between the ridges could show how far back the turret is able to move. The ridges would be the colour of the flier while the "rails" would be boltgun coloured. You could even paint hazard stripes or similar as a border to warn that moving machinery

Very rough but the green bits are the plasticard (could be placed further back but image doesn't allow that), the red lines would be hazard stripes or some other warning border and the gray lines are the bare metal rails or you could paint the whole rectangle bare metal.

This is what the Stormraven should look like right out of the box. /nuffsaid

Truer word were never spoken.

I've got mine ready to prime and I look forward to getting them in playable condition. I just need the humidity level to drop a bit.

@OI: Thanx for posting the underside shot. That was very helpful.

Cheers,
