This Eighth Founding Chapter, originally named the Howling Sons was created from the pure genestock of the Iron Hands Chapter. In the year 782.M41 the Inquisition declared them Excommunicate Traitoris for their heretical ideals about the Imperium and the Emperor as well as their open alignment with Xenos species while combating Chaos forces on Troccian Primaris. After their excommunication the Howling Sons changed their name to the Sons of Perdition. The Sons believe that the Imperium in its current state is a plague upon mankind and a twisted abhorration of the Emperor's original intent. The Sons are also known to be unnaturally aggressive and legends of their vicious actions and engagements are still told across the Imperium. Unlike most other chapters cast out by and rejecting the ways of the Imperium, the Sons despise and combat Chaos in all of its forms. Secretly on worlds across the universe they have come to be regarded as liberators from an oppressive and corrupt Imperium as well as deliverers from the forces of Chaos.

Chapter History

The Howling Sons are a successor Chapter to the Iron Hands, and characteristic of such a progenitor, their skills with technology were and remain unsurpassed. The Howling Sons used all methods of warfare when combating their enemies, however, they were legend for riding their Space Marine bikes hard into battle and destroying the enemies heart before a chance could be given to mount any semblance of a defense, the Sons were a brutal foe to behold. On innumerable worlds they took the fight to the enemies of the Imperium and, it was said, had great skill in combating the forces of the Ruinous Powers in particular. The Sons tended to make enemies with other Astartes Chapters, however, because of their isolationist, aggressive, headstrong and vicious nature. The Ultramarines in particular refused to fight alongside the Howling Sons on several occasions. The Sons, through their millennia of service had seen the corruption and intolerance that plagued organizations of the Imperium, and had become disgusted by it. Over the years their teachings began to reflect these revelations and they started to become more open and bold about their beliefs and ideals.

The Great Revelation

In the year 782.M41 a Howling Sons Fleet was dispatched along with a force from the Astral Swords by an Inquisitor Hedredon of the Ordo Malleus to quell a Chaos led rebellion on the world of Troccian Primaris, a planet located on the fringes of Segmentum Pacificus. According the Inquisitor, the incident was isolated but had developed beyond the control of the local planetary forces and required Astartes intervention. It was also known that an Eldar group was on the planet and was searching for an unknown object. When the Imperial Forces arrived, they quickly discovered that the rebellion had not only gained far more momentum then they had been led to believe, but that the forces of Chaos, followers of the God Nurgle, were much more dominant than originally suspected as well. Despite being hopelessly outnumbered and against the advice of the Sons, the Astral Swords, believing that loyalist forces still controlled the planetary defense systems, continued with their original plan. The Astral Swords, using drop pods to launch a full frontal attack upon the planetary spaceport that was acting as a makeshift hub for the Chaos forces, would attempt to isolate and destroy their self proclaimed leader. The Sons had refused to participate in the drop, arguing that the spaceport would be heavily defended, regardless of which side maintained control of the planetary defense system, and that the Imperial losses sustained from such an attack would be extremely costly. The Sons had been correct, as the Astral Swords were savagely cut down in waves by the planetary defense grids that were under Chaos control. The surviving Astral Swords that successfully made planet fall managed to fight their way into the Space Port but became bogged down and were unable to advance, instead being pushed back by the sheer numbers they were facing. If the Imperial Forces wished to achieve victory, the Sons would have to catch the rebels by surprise and cut the head off of the proverbial snake. Desperate to find a plan of attack that would be effective enough to crush the vastly numerically superior forces of Chaos and swift enough to save their brothers cut off in the space port, the Sons made contact with the Eldar on the far side of the planet.

The Eldar were searching for a Chaos object of immense power that had been left on the planet millennia before and, having been discovered by the indigenous humans, was the root of the taint that now threatened to consume the planet. The Sons sent out their three most skilled Scout Packs, the Watchers, the Night Riders and the Extractors to assist the Eldar in finding the object. After several hours of searching in conjunction with the Eldar, the Packs found the object in an immense clearing guarded by the forces of Nurgle and signaled their mutually uneasy makeshift command that their plan was ready for execution. Together the Sons and the Eldar organized and mounted a simultaneous offensive, one force attacking the Chaos object and the other attacking the planetary defense systems main control towers. The attacks were successful and with both the defense systems down and the object connecting the forces of Nurgle destroyed the Sons led a third party into the Space Port. With the remaining Astral Swords the Sons were able to press home their sudden advantage and they fought their way deep into the heart of the Port, confronted the tainted leader of the Chaos forces and slew him.

The day belonged to the Imperium and should have been celebrated as such, but as the Sons returned to their fleet they realized that an Ultramarines battle group lay in orbit waiting for their return. When the Howling Sons were successfully in orbit, their second in command, Dax was confronted by Inquisitor Hedredon about their temporary alignment on the planet with the Eldar. Unsatisfied with the answers Dax had given him and because of a case file that the Inquisitor had compiled on the Sons prior to their arrival, declared them excommunicate traitoris. Dax, in a rage fought the Inquisitor and after a prolonged duel in which Dax lost his right arm he slew Hedredon, keeping his rosarius as a talisman to remind him of the narrow-mindedness that the Imperium bred. As though on cue the Howling Sons fleet was engaged system wide by the Ultramarines and only because the forces from the Astral Swords refused to engage the Sons did they survive the day at all. Only about 400 Sons escaped the purging fires of the Ultramarines in what would later come to be known as the Great Revelation, and Chapter Master Gravus had not been one of them. The Sons regrouped on the fringes of Imperial Space and Dax was put in command as the Sons' newly appointed King.

Chapter Organization

The Sons of Perdition are a Codex divergent Chapter in that they are organized into what are called Packs. The size and purpose of each Pack is dependant upon the Individuals that are a part of it. Smaller Packs act as scouts and specialists while the larger Packs form the basic companies. At the moment there are 18 Packs in the Chapter, each with their own name, traits, heraldry and area of responsibility. The Chapter's ranks were changed during the Great Revelation and the Son's leader is now known as the King while every Pack is led by what is now called a Marshal. The Second in command of the Son's is called the Master at Arms and he leads the Ancients, the first and larger of the Chapters two Veteran Packs.

The Sons of Perdition recruit from worlds that share their beliefs about the Imperium and the forces of Chaos and on a myriad worlds find empathetic figures within the Imperium itself. It is an extremely difficult process to become a Son and there are five trials that an initiate must successfully commit himself to before he can be accepted and begin training in one of the Chapters bike scout Packs.

The Sons display an extreme level of discipline and each Pack is able to act autonomously when necessary. They all believe in their purpose down to their core and their methods display this stalwart nature. The Sons, after the Great Revelation have also adopted a far less formal approach to their dealings within the Chapter and have only increased their cohesiveness because of it.

Chapter Tactics

The Sons of Perdition prefer to achieve victory through lightning fast strikes and make extensive use of Space Marine Bikes. It is said that every member of the Chapter has access to their own bike and has spent countless hours tinkering and working with them. Because of this devotion every bike is a masterpiece of death. The Sons are experts at hunting down and killing forces of the Traitor Legions and they believe that the forces of Chaos are the greatest threat to the survival of mankind. The Sons have even, in extreme circumstances, allied themselves with forces from the Tau Empire and the Eldar to achieve victory against the Ruinous Powers.

Chapter Appearance

The Sons of Perdition wear black armor with white and blue. Every member of the Chapter paints their helmet the color fitting their rank and each one is able to display their personal iconography on their right pauldron. Their Chapter symbol is a winged scythe and they also make use of blood drops in their iconography.

Notable Characters

King Dax: Dax has been the leader of the Sons since Chapter Master Gravus was killed during the Great Revelation and is regarded Chapter wide as a highly intelligent but brooding and at times volatile leader. He is very young but is so loved by the Chapter that no Son would ever question his rule.

Master at Arms Cyngar: Cyngar is the leader of the Ancients, the first and larger of the Chapters' two Veteran Packs.

Some time in mid M41 the Inquisition declared them Excommunicate Traitoris and the Howling Sons changed their name to the Sons of Perdition

Um... Why were they kicked out? What is this Great Revelation? Right now it seems like the Inquisition just kicked them out for the fun of it.

The Sons of Perdition are a Codex divergent Chapter

Why?

The Sons will even ally themselves with forces from the Tau Empire and the Eldar to achieve victory against the forces of Chaos.

Heresy.

It's okay. I guess. Not much information, so it's quite incomplete. What's the central theme here? What is their character, their soul?
