Wolf Lord designs

Egil

As regards whether outflanking Rhinos are overpowered, in the Codex: Space Marines the character Kor'sarro Khan gives the entire army the ability to outflank. Of course for that they give up Combat Tactics, and that makes its value hard to nail down in a points value*, but the character himself hasn't proven horribly overpowered. The khan is not one of the characters I see in most Space Marine lists. Skarvald, you think it would be different with our codex?

Not to mention SoBs can outflank Dominions with Immolators... Personally, I don't find outflanking Rhinos OP, but I also don't think it's the best fit either. The assault boat/open-top idea an/or re-roll difficult terrain sounds like a better direction.

I LOVE the idea of getting/giving some more Iron Priest love. I'm not sure how to logically equate them to WG in regard to the FoC.

Alternatively, I would propose the idea that a SW army with Egil Iron Wolf in it would perhaps be allowed a wargear upgrade option for all 'piloted' vehicles (razors, vindies, speeders) be given the Repair special rule (akin to what rhinos already have) as though there were a fledgling Iron Priest apprentice, or equivalent, on-board to assist in repairs to the more complex machine spirits of non-rhino vehicles.

Rhinos with hand rails? This is what you're looking for (copied from here _

Thunder Rhino - Chariot of the Russ LEGENDARY UPGRADE +1LP

Armour

BS F S R

Thunder Rhino 4 11 11 10

Upgrade Prerequisites

Replace a Space Wolves Rhino with the Thunder Rhino

Upgraded Unit Type

• Vehicle (Open Topped, Fast)

Transport Capacity

• 10 Models (inside)

• 10 Models (Hand Rails)

Hand Rails: The Sons of Russ have a method of allowing larger or multiple packs to be

transported. Around the vehicle are mounted heavy duty hand rails and foot rests that the Space

Wolves can hang onto while the rest of the pack is transported inside. In addition to the ten

carried normally, a further ten models may be transported like this but must each take a

dangerous terrain test if the vehicle moves Flat Out. Alternatively, in addition the pack of up to

ten models the vehicle may carry inside a second pack of up to ten models may be carried on the

hand rails. The vehicle ceases to count as Open Topped if any heavy infantry are embarked.

I'm sorry guys, for falling off the radar like I did. Hospital does that.

Now, to address the fresh ideas voiced here. That is... a month old fresh. :) Any way, per Wolf Lord...

Engir Krakendoom

While I think we would all love open-topped Rhino's, or better yet: rhino's with assault doors, I don't think it's a good idea to start messing with standard pattern vehicles. Let's leave Rhino's as they are.

Btw, Skarvald, those thunder rhino's are scary. Try to de-mech wolves now, now every unit basically has a spare transport.

Egil Iron Wolf

Brother Kirus, I think it's too simple to just equate Egil with the Iron Hands. He's described as a tank commander, not necessarily as a blacksmith type. Hence I don't think a thunder hammer would be necessarily suited to him.

A combi-melta could work very well though, even if I prefer the simplicity of the traditional storm bolter for a change. What do all of you think?

Then, regarding Skarvald's Iron Gauntlet rule, by itself I like it. It would indeed make Iron Priests, and particularly their Iron Wolf saga, a very interesting choice. However, nothing of this sort is direclty indicated in Egil's description, which is what I'm trying to work of here. Hence I don't think this is the best idea for him.

Finally, in answer to Loathir's Own's tank commander idea, the comparison with Chronus is one I also made. However, in my original design I've opted to take a slightly different course. Instead of giving Egil a sort of tank commander rule, I decided to upgrade his personal Land Raider directly with practically the same benefits (and more besides), reasoning first that his personal Land Raider is mentioned in the Codex and secondly that the awesomeness of his Land Raider needn't only be tied to himself, but also to his probably hand-picked crew.

Which do you guys think befits better? A tank commander rule or the upgraded Land Raider?

Sven Bloodhowl

Loathir's Own, I like your idea of a nerfed Cleaning Flame. The idea of cleansing flame had already occurred to me (my own variation is obviously based on it), but yours is more elegant. I like it. The only change I'd make is to not tie it to Sven's unit, but to one selected vanguard unit. The fire breathing is attested of his vanguard, and it also provides a modicum of flexibility, which doesn't hurt.

Kjarl Grimblood

Eyeslikethunder, seizing initiative on a 4+ instead of getting a re-roll to decide first turn, is a viable alternative. One I had considered and tentatively decided I liked the other one better. Still, it is a viable alternative. Which of the two do you guys prefer, and why?

Krom Dragongaze

Yes, a new Wolf Lord!

Krom Dragongaze - 215 points
  • Unit Type: Infantry
  • Composition: 1 Wolf Lord (Unique)

  • runic armour
  • frost blade
  • plasma pistol
  • frag and krak grenades
  • wolf tooth necklace
  • wolf tail talisman
  • Belt of Russ
  • Saga of Majesty

  • ATSKNF
  • Acute Senses
  • Counter-attack
  • Independent Character
  • Fierce-eye
  • Krom's Companions

  • Fierce-eye: Krom is known for his sheer presence, and is called the fierce-eye for a reason. All enemy models in base contact with Krom Dragongaze must pass a Leadership test with a -2 penalty or be reduced to Weapon Skill 1 for the duration of the Assault phase.

  • Krom Companions: The fierce-eye retains a great many Wolf Guards in his Company. To represent this, an army that includes Krom Dragongaze may include one Wolf Guard pack as a Troops choice.

I think much of the design of this character speaks rather for himself. Runic armour, frost blade and plasma pistol to give him some of the coolest weaponry around. Saga of Majesty and the Fierce-eye rule to represent his character, and some Wolf Guards as troops to represent their great number.

As regards his pricing, I've accounted for his wargear, rated his Fierce-eye rule at 5 points and the wolf guard rule for free.

I was thinking of giving him the option to replace his runic armour with terminator armour. Perhaps exchanging his plasma pistol with a combi-plasma or a storm shield in the process?

What do you think about him?

Hospitals are always fun, right? Especially hospital food. I hope you're better now whatever ailment or injury you are recovering from!

I like Krom.

But why would he ever want to exchange his Runic Armor for Terminator armor, when he already has a 4+ invulnerable save from Belt of Russ? O.o Pay more points to lose grenades and the ability to sweeping advance? I wouldn't bother with the Storm Shield, unless you just want him to be an all-around tough HQ to kill, especially if his enemies are hitting him on what... 5's? 6's? A Storm Shield might make him too similar to Arjac, I think.

Oh hospitals are great fun indeed! At least around here the food is good. And thanks, even if recovery is going to take a while, I'm much better now. Hope to be out of here in a week.

Good point on the desirability of terminator armour, but his runic armour would look kinda out of place if you want to run him with a unit of terminators. That's more or less the one reason I'd like to give him the option. What about making it a free option? Grenades for a better gun. If you stick him in a Land Raider Crusader or Redeemer it's actually a decent trade-off.

Actually, instead of a combi-plasma we could give him a proper plasma gun to go with the terminator armour.

Heh, and I just had an idea for Bjorn Stormwolf. Give him TDA, a thunder hammer and ... an assault cannon! Weaponry doesn't get louder and more brash than that. :P
