well here is my latest chapter that i am trying to stand up...

the marines will have tabards AND robes they use 2 symbols for there chapter a templar cross or a down pointed sword....

basically i want to kit bash the DA and BT kits together to come up with a completely different feeling chapter...i love both the kits and they will provide lots of ideas however i need your guys help with a few questions

how should i go about assigning a robe a tabard to battle-brother should the robes be for officers and veterans? and tabards for rank and file...?

secondly the 2 symbols in the DA kits there is a down pointed sword (doesnt have the wings) and i love the templar cross too so how could i assign the icons to the marines??

also the DA kits have great icons like the angels and everything

what if i made a veteran formation and they were know as "the blades" where they had the templar icon in the left shoulder and the sword on the right??

basically i am willing to build their fluff around the models...and i really want to add both ranges into my new chapter

so what if they didnt know who there primarch was or if they constantly fought with the dark angels or black templars and they were gifted the right to wear some of their symbols as a badge of honor??

Please Brothers i would really like to start this ASAP

so here is what i have so far...

rank and file will have red tabards with Templar crosses on both shoulders...

veterans, Vet sgts and will have black robes with red lining, these robes have come to be know as the "black mantle" although the robes are a badge of rank they also denote induction into "the brotherhood". being part of the brotherhood allow these marines more specialized combat and leadership training to better lead there respective sections. these space marine are trained by the veteran first company and upon transfer to the 1st co they become known as sword brothers..

marines of the brotherhood that are no part of the first Co. (like vet Sgts and captains of battle companies) are know as shield brothers and are allow use of the inventory of the venerable 1st Co. Upon promotion to captain the marine gives up his robe and re dawns his tabard. although he will retain his sword iconography on his armor.

it is not unheard of for marines of "the Brotherhood" to add sword devices to their armor and war-gear...(for veterans and officers this often means using a bladed weapon on the field of battle.

the sword is seen as a badge of honor and reverence to all those within the chapter...this dates back to their founding although the specific meaning of this has been lost to the records of time but the tradition is still carried on...

Chapter Champions and Co. Champions although part of the brotherhood dye their robes and or tabards red to represent the sacrifice that each champion before them has made in the emperors name. or they alone are given the option to switch between a tabard or robe...

Putting together two separate icon packs is challenging but I think you have a decent plan.

The officer corp is always a challenge. But could you explain this:

marines of the brotherhood that are no part of the first Co. (like vet Sgts and captains of battle companies) are know as shield brothers and are allow to take arms and armor from the 1st Co. armory (except for TDA).

I get arms, but the armor part ... maybe reword it to something like: "... shield brothers are allowed to use 1st Company inventory befitting their status or rank outside the venerable First."

?

the sword is seen as a badge of honor and reverence to all those within the chapter..also officer and veterans are know to always go into battle with a blade of some kind as honorific weapon..

So - are you saying that a sword is used as a weapon and the iconography is no longer wanted? OR the sword motif will be used in various ways? Either way, this reads like the sword on tilt plate will not be used. This actually is not such a bad idea as it allows you to keep using the cross on the tilt pads. That means you could use this DA model! Or the DA bolters!

Need more info but I like what's here :P

Just a thought, but maybe the Blade iconography added to the cross could signify a special honor (battle honor). IIRC, the feathers adorning DA terminators is somehow tied to a battle or combat action undertaken by the DA. The sword cross motif could be in remembrance of some significant battle undertaken by a specific company within the Chapter. It also need not be the first company.

This would be a battle honor, similar to specific company banners or campaign ribbons. Also, it need not be some “glorious victory” by the company where they completely overrun and destroy the enemy. There can be honor in even fighting a losing battle. A good example is “The Chosin Few”.

That is not a misspelling, but the nickname given to the UN troops who served at Chosin. 15,000 Marines with a small detachment of US Army and British Royal Marines fought their way through a numerically superior Chinese force that had surrounded them in the area surrounding Chosin Reservoir. The battle lasted over 17 days in some of the worst conditions encountered during the Korean War. The temperature dropped to 30 degrees below zero. Casualties lost to frostbite were almost as numerous as those wounded by enemy fire. The UN forces fought their way to the port of Hungman where they were evacuated by the U.S. Navy. Although they were forced to withdrawal from North Korea the UN troops inflicted crippling losses on the enemy.

The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir became one of the most decorated battles in American History. A total of 17 Medals of Honor, 73 Navy Crosses and 23 Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded for actions during the battle.

EDIT:

I’ve just re-read your original post. Are we discussing a chapter or just a veteran company? Assuming you mean Chapter….the with a name like the Blades or Argent Blades, shouldn’t the sword iconography be your primary insignia? Also if you are kit bashing the models, then you might be able to do the same with the winged swords.

This would work best with the sword and wing icon with the stylized wing…the one that looks more like a sword on top of a sprocket or cog. If you invert the icon so that the tip is of the sword is pointing upwards, you can use the “wings” to represent a solar disk. Using a little green stuff to create points between the teeth of the cog (feather of the wing) mirroring the upturned blade of the sword would add that extra little detail to make the insignia more than just an upside down DA icon.

The Argent Blade could represent silvery light of dawn, which pushes back the darkness of night or (if you have ever seen it) the silvery shafts of light, which break through the clouds on overcast days or as a storm begins to abate. I’m not sure if this imagery fits with the what you wanted for the background of your Chapter, but feel free to use it if you want.

ok so what do you guys think? i like the idea of the captain and champion with tabards i think it will tie them into the rest of the army. i like the idea of the robes "black mantle" the robes i think will separate the veterans from the rest of the army...as befits a member of the brotherhood..i also changed the armor color from boltgun metal to adeptus battlegrey

Thanks feel free for C&C I need some more solid direction
