A little update on the Fortress of Redemption:

First bunker annex is complete!

A skull doing his Kiss impression. :D

http://i49.tinypic.com/w0ntqa.jpg

Also did some attempts at some OSLish effect from the various light sources on the bunker.

And the top deck with the missile silo closed.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2uqg8ef.jpg

And opened.

Now for the other 3 parts. :D

Very nice work. I like the bits at the side of the table. I hate it when people put stuff on the battlefield. I saw a guy with a pint glass (full!) on a battlefield once in a picture from Warhammer world. I almost had a heart attack looking at it!!

Really good table looking forward to seeing this progress

Cheers

Thanks guys! Another update:

Almost 300 drybrushed skulls later, the main angel tower is finished!

Here with the completed bunker annex.

http://i47.tinypic.com/24y7gw6.jpg

And the front side.

I think I'll have the other 2 parts finished by the end of the week.

Looks great!

Do you find you have problems with the RoB board being too slippery to place models on any kind of incline?

Thanks!

The resin bases my Grey Knights are on have a flat bottom, so those did have troubles with staying put on the slopes. However, I solved that by glueing pieces of felt on the bottoms:

http://i49.tinypic.com/n5h1jb.jpg

As you can see, everything stays nice and put: :P

http://i47.tinypic.com/5felmq.jpg

Of course, any top heavy model such as that Valkyrie in the background, or a metal Zoanthrope, can still tip over if tilted enough. I haven't tried any heavy skimmers yet (don't own any), which might also be troublesome. But there's little you can do against that besides eliminating inclines on the board altogether I guess.

A friend of mine just started a Necron army, and is currently painting a Ghost Ark, so I'll know soon enough if such things will stay put on the hills. :P

A small update:

http://i49.tinypic.com/k17xxw.jpg

Almost finished! Need to do the lighting effects on the left bunker annex, but it was close to midnight when I finished all the gold details (painted enough golden Gothic arches for a while ;)), and I didn't think powering up an airbrush compressor late on a Sunday evening would have been appreciated. :cuss

After that I only need to paint a couple of the optional heavy bolters and searchlight to round it up.

Sadly I can't finish it until I get back from a business trip next Wednesday.

http://i49.tinypic.com/qmx4er.jpg

And it's finally done! Airbrushed the lights on the left bunker annex, and finished the heavy bolters and searchlights. These are magnatized so that they can be placed on the main tower's corners and the crenels of the bunker annexes.

Top view.

Skulls for the skull tower!

Rear stage entrance.

And the twin-linked Icarus lascannon turret!

The modelling convention is next week, so as I seriously doubt I can finish any other terrain before that due to the time this thing took up (I think it used up 40-50 hours of my spare time), I going to try to finish some of the GK models I have half-finished to take to the convention. I'll continue with the rest of terrain after that.

Thanks guys!

Great work!

That looks pretty big. Not too cumbersome to carry to games?

It is pretty big, yeah. It does break into its seperate parts though for easier transport. But with the exception of the modelling convention, I'm just going to leave it at home as part of my growing terrain collection. :)

Just came back from the Dutch modelling convention 'ModelBrouwers' (brouwersdag.nl, Dutch site), where me and a friend demonstrated 40k to the uninitiated masses. Had a lot of fun: lots of positive reactions and interested people and even met some other 40k players from the area. Here some shots from the boards:

My Fortress of Redemption, where the stalwart Ultramarines held fast against an onslaught of Xenos.

My friend's table, were we played a demonstration game with my Grey Knights versus his Ultramarines.

And another piece to add to the terrain collection:

Assembled and painted the Skyshield Landing Pad today, shown here in the unfurled configuration.

http://i49.tinypic.com/qnw600.jpg

As it's already dark outside and there's only a single light bulb in the attic, I had to use my trusty Land Raider as an extra illumination source. :P

http://i50.tinypic.com/20how1d.jpg

Top view. I intend to add pigments to show scorch marks from the serviced flyer's engines at a later date, as it's currently a little to clean looking, but it'll do for now.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2pob19x.jpg

And it's a nice display base for flyer models. :)

Your Table/terrain project is really coming along now. It is great to see those pictures of it in use with loads of nice miniatures on it. The sky pad is another great addition. Thank god you had a land raider handy for the extra illumination...

When I saw your last picture I thought Crikey he is building a hive city!

Looking forward to more

Cheers

Thanks Yak!

Ironically, with all those wall sections, I'll probably only be able to create 3, maaaaybe 4 buildings. :(

Because...

I like big buildings and I can not lie!

You other Battle-Brothers can't deny!

...ahem, moving on. :)

Decided on the basic layout of the buildings. Still need to add bases, interior detailing and do gapfilling and such of course. :P

http://i46.tinypic.com/foexkw.jpg

Here's the smallest building, the Manufactorum. I left the first floor entirely closed to block line of sight.

http://i48.tinypic.com/2w70i9y.jpg

And the upper floors.

http://i49.tinypic.com/155gwi8.jpg

The Sanctum Imperialis, which is somewhat bigger and more open.

http://i48.tinypic.com/2cyll3c.jpg

A balcony added to the side, used to address the unwashed masses.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2mgp9xf.jpg

And more than enough room to place your troops.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2n850uf.jpg

And the pièce de résistance, a ruined church. Can't have a 40k gaming table without at least some pompous building of religion, now can we? :) Combined out of 2.5 Basilica Administratum buildings and a Shrine of the Aquila, it's quite big. I based it on a church shown on the GW site back when Planetstrike was introduced. Still undecided if I'm going to create a staircase for the door of the Shrine of the Aquila, or just create a small balcony.

http://i46.tinypic.com/i4nu3o.jpg

Already added some interior detailing. The dead Blood Angels Terminator from Space Hulk is getting a place of honour.

http://i46.tinypic.com/r1elo3.jpg

It easily measures up with the Fortress of Redemption in size. :)

Thanks guys!

Various people have been asking me for more information on how the table itself was constructed; so I thought, might as well share it with everyone. Don't mind the mess.

http://i48.tinypic.com/263a255.jpg

The table with the Realm of Battle plates removed, so you can see the support frame.

http://i48.tinypic.com/33esymx.jpg

The two supports in the width of the table carry most of the weight, and have been assembled in a T for extra strength and to prevent warping/sagging of the wood under the weigth of the Realm of Battle plates.

http://i47.tinypic.com/33b397a.jpg

The side of the table. The╒╕shaped struts are made with two legs and a support, which are again for added strength and to prevent warping/sagging.

http://i45.tinypic.com/2qu89ih.jpg

The supports in the length of the table are attached to the sides with bed hooks. These are to prevent warping/sagging in the length of the table. The small blocks attached to the bottom of the table top in this and the previous 2 pictures are used to guide the 4 segments of the table top into place on the support frame when assembling it.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2d99005.jpg

And a close up of a corner. Here you can see that each of the 4 table top segments is made out of two pieces glued together. The lower piece is wider to create the inside lip for the board to rest on.
