Portents of Talos

So for the holidays I had the best father and girlfriend in the world. Between them, I got a whole set of Vallejo pigments, some nice new brushes (no more synthetics!), and a butt ton of money to spend on my favorite money pit.

Out of this I turned to the darkside and decided I would finally start the Space Marine chapter I swore on my own grave I'd never start.

The idea of this force is a small 1750 showcase force. Something I can put a lot of time and effort into to make it look awesome, while not having to worry about wanting to expand it in the future. This is another challenge for me, as I want to improve not only my modeling skills, but my painting with this project.

So I present the Portents of Talos.

First up is Brother-Sergeant Castor

Hmm, interesting color scheme. But two big problems stand out on that test model. First, brown/clay pigment on a bronze finish doesn't work too well. I didn't even notice it was pigmented until I spotted the color shift on his special shin guard thingy. A black powder or something more exotic that contrasts with the bronze would work better. Second, and this one may just be a matter of photography, the bronze itself is kind of flat. A highlight, washes, or a mixture of both could go a long way to fleshing out the color.

Still a promising start over all, and I dig the gory sword :D

On a side note, what sort of brushes did you get exactly? I've always made due with a hodgepodge of different brands and mixes of synthetic and genuine hair brushes, but I've been inkling to 'professionalize' my tools for some time :)

I blame my camera (droid phone :) ) I am going to borrow a friend's canon rebel so I can take some better photos. The pigment stands out better in person. Though I am thinking of adding another layer of color to it.

protents of talos eh? check out my "Sons of Talos" blog i have just started. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=240829

I like the color scheme. Its solid and effective. I blame Skyrim for the popularity of the name, though the version of Talos in my story is indirectly related (look in Greek Mythology).

It may just be me, but the colors are a bit to much of a familiar shade to them. For example, the pigments on the shines to boots seem a bit much, like he's been tredding through clay. Perhaps look into maybe ankle deep? I agree with Firepower, bring other colors into the mix because they just don't stand out in my view. The 2nd set of pictures from the Kantor model, is that his face. That was the first and only point on the model that instantly held my attention, everything else just felt...clayed.

Im not sure what scheme you are aiming for, but I think perhaps lighten up on the coats you put on and the browns you have excess of. The link you posted looks more of a golden/bronze, not just bronze, perhaps like Firepower also mentioned, highlights, just to add clarity to dividing the model and showing edges. Just my two cents.
