New Pre-heresy Project

Well i started a WIP on coolminiornot.com a while back and never committed to actually posting pictures or vids ect. ect...

So my new years resolution is to commit to this endeavor, HERE!

ok so....

The Project

Well as stated in my ancient post at coolmini, I had recently come into some money (thanks to the new york state lottery), and went a little crazy buying a ton of forgeworld stuff. (who here wouldn't... be honest) So after sitting for about a year in my work room still in the bags, collecting dust I decided to clean up shop and sell most of it on ebay. Well Im back at it since the release of all this pre-heresy goodness that forge world has put out. The project as stands is to recreate an entire "great company" of pre-heresy Iron Hands. As we all know, back in the day (in the future of the 31st millennium that is..) Legions were divided into "great companies", each of which were about a thousand (ish) marines strong. Now the idea is a daunting one. That means buying, converting, assembling, painting and basing (probably going to buy some nice custom bases) a thousand marines. Not including the accompanying armor support units and heavies. It makes me dizzy just thinking about it.

IDEAS IDEAS IDEAS!

I need them, you guys got them. Shoot me messages, post on this topic, send a carrier pigeon! Generally hit me up with the coolest, raddest pre-heresy iron hands vision that you have for modelling, painting, displaying ANYTHING! I am open to all of your suggestions and would love to hear them! Also I will be needing a HD vid/cam for documenting this so suggestions on that topic art welcome as well.

looking forward to hearing from you all!

Well I'd say plenty of MKIII iron armour and phobos pattern bolters as the basis. Perhaps some iron warriors chests and helmets (sans horns obviously) clickety. Something along the lines of the first pic here. Also the clamped khorne berserker legs look awesome and would fit the image quite nicely. Also the warsmith would look great as a sergeant, as well as the iron priest. Additionally- tons of scratch-built bionics (the ones you can buy will get repetitive quickly) and mkIII plasticard crotch-flaps for all marines, to get a unified look. A 1000 marines is a pretty massive endeavor and, sadly, a massive display piece and not a playable army. Obviously it's your time and money so if you have the patience to go through with it- pics or it didn't happen ;)

There was a chap who fully converted and painted some Iron Hands and they were magnificent (on the GW What's New Today Blog), but if you are planning to maintain that kind of quality throughout the army, you'll never finish it.

So you need to organise yourself real good! Basically, divide the whole 1000 Space Marine into bunches of 5 to 10. Then, take each bunch, one after the other and fully complete each one (so that's assembling, basing, painting each bunch completely and then going onto the next one). To break up the monotony, you could every time you finish a bunch, paint up a vehicle or a character as a reward. Also, if you've got some friends who are also hobbyists, then you should try organising some painting nights with food and drink and while you paint your Iron Hands, they can paint whatever they need to paint or help you!

I'll PM bannus, our very own B&C Iron Hands specialist, so that he can maybe give you some advice (I'm sure he'd be interested to see this) :)

Anyway, I hope that helps a bit!

Good luck with the whole thing and don't forget the pics! :P
