Optimal Numbers?

Recommended Posts

Hello my Shaggy Brethren ;)

I thought I would make a quick visit here to the Aett to hopefully gain some advise and insight. A quick background...

After I complete my LPC vow for the home chapter, i'll be starting up a brand new project, which will be utilizing the Wolf Dex. So my question is, what are optimal numbers for squads of Hunters, and squads of Fangs? Most of the lists i'll be using will be higher point values (1850-2500) so don't feel the need to limit based on that. Thank you for any help!

It really depends on the kind of list.

If you're talking about Grey Hunters, then I assume you're not doing Loganwing. So with Hunters it's a matter of if they are riding in Rhinos (9 Hunters w/ Melta + 1 Wolf Guard w/ Combi-melta) or Razorbacks (5 Hunters w/ Melta + 1 Wolf Guard w/ Combi-melta). And take 4-6 squads of them, depending on how many points you have.

For Long Fangs, I never take fewer than 2 squads unless it's 1000pts or less. I do squads of 5 with 4 missile launchers. If I have more points or am doing Loganwing, then I'll typically throw a few Lascannons in there as well.

Hi CC, I'd pretty much second what the Dhali Lama said above with a bit of clarification.

As far a optimal size for a pack of GH goes, there's a few considerations:

1) Transport capacity (natural limiting factor for mech & pods)

2) Resilience (ability of the squad to withstand casualties without breaking)

3) Efficiency (ability to fulfil their chosen role)

This is why for a Rhino Squad 9 GH (or 8 + WG pack leader) is considered *optimal* - it means you can sustain 3 casualties before having to take a morale check and save 15pts from the 10th model, whereas in a squad of 8 models (or 7GH + WGPL etc.) you only have to lose 2 casualties (25% of the squad) before you have to take the check. Obviously every time we roll for morale we run the risk of failing the check so the fewer times we have to roll the better!

It's not compulsory to go this way though and if you like to try running smaller squads in rhinos just think about the points above - bear in mind some people DO manage to do it successfully and enjoy re-directing the 15-30pts they shave off each unit by only running 6 or 7 GH with a WGPL. So long as you find your squads can take a few casualties and still fulfil it's role e.g melta a tank, Rapid fire & receive a charge etc. etc. then go for whatever size you find works best for you.

If you're running MSU in TWLC or LasPlas Razorbacks, most people want to maximise the number of Razorback hulls in their army so usually would keep squad sizes to the minimum of 5 (unless you had the spare points and chose to bolster up a few squads here and there) and keep squad upgrades to a minimum. The idea being to have multiple, redundant units rather than a few tooled up ones. I think it can be a bit boring to play this way though, and much prefer my wolves to be rushing forward to occupy the mid-ground rather than sitting back and shooting from inside their transports!
