Now i've been playing my DA for awhile and my favorite gaming opponent remains my space wolf buddy. However, no matter how i change my list he seems to almost always get the upper hand on me. Do you guys have any specific suggestions? So far my best list was when he ran rhino/dread heavy list and i ran footslogging DW with lotsa CML's that made him walk pretty quick

Mix up your DW with three vindies (kept in reserve for survivability) that creates a 30" fear factor that walking SWs dont want to enter, CMLs as you say are great to make pups walk (and aren't too bad at making LFs hide too. Pups are best inside 24" so ruin their plans through the mind game.

Howdy!

Easy. You just reach across the table and punch him in the face when he's not looking. Then you can say you beat him. When he asks why on earth you punched him just respond: "The Lion forgot to give Russ one to grow on. I'm just picking up the slack." ;)

But now on a more serious note....

My favorite opponents are also Space Wolves! In fact, I've played more games against Space Wolves than any other kind of army. They've only ever managed to beat me once... of course all those wins were when I was using my Tyranid. My win record with DA is slightly less pronounced... but they haven't managed to beat my new army yet.

As far as suggestions go I don't really have a lot to go on (from your description of his list) but my opponents usually love Longfangs, tons of Rune Priests, some CC oriented Grey Hunters pack, and of course Arjak. I use a combined arms approach to my own list and try to throw in splashes of DW but keep the primary core of my army Greenwing. How do I win against them? Superior fire power! I like 5 man combat squads and 5 man Vet Coy squads armed with as many plasma weapons as i can get. I try to avoid melee like the plague and just rapid fire my way to glory. It's worth mentioning that I play incredibly defensive during objective based missions forcing him to walk/ride through a steady stream of AP2 weapons. Since my normal SW opponent has some scary cavalry units I always try to remain at least 24" from his table edge if at all possible.

But really that's about it. My guys hold the line to the bitter end and make them pay for every inch they take towards me. Though, it gets scary when they put Arjak, Wolf Priest, Rune Priest, and a bunch of Grey Hunters in a Drop Pod and slams him into my front line first turn. Then again... that's why I keep my V Dread close to the bulk of my infantry... Slamming Deathwing with an assault cannon into the Longfangs is pretty effective as well. Helps take the heat off of the rest of my army.

Well, that was kind of a ramble of tactics but I hope it's useful to you!

I second the plasma suggestion... I like to run three PG/PC tactical squads and a crusaderload of lightning claw termies (with belial and an interrogator chaplain) against SW...the plasma to blow a path for the crusader to reach his backfield, and then the termies to eat the longfangs. Funny thing happened in one game where the chappy charged out one door, bels out the other, and the squad off the ramp, chewing all three longfangs squads simultaneously...the termie squad vaporized theirs, bels broke his (ran off the board) on the charge, and the chappy just tied his up long enough for help to arrive. Funny thing is, that opponent didn't change his list, he just made spreading those squads out a higher priority than ensuring that they get good fire lanes. Anyway, they're still not the easiest opponent, but I do win more than I lose, provided that I take this anti-wolf list. My all-comers DA lists don't fare as well...the green one lacks the means to hunt down the longfangs effectively, and the DW list lacks anti-MEQ fire support.

Why don't you tell us what your friend usually fields, and we can give more specific advice about that.

A bolter line, for example, is not ideal against a large Thunderwolf unit. :D

(Touch wood, I have never lost to a Space Wolf army since their new codex!)
