Honda
My vow... I, Honda of the Emperor's finest, his Golden Sons, the Custodes, vow on the honour of the Emperor to paint and present at least three Storm Ravens on or before the 31st of March, 2012. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done. Except we don't fail. Ever. That's why we protect the Emperor. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9415.jpg I will be tracking progress on this task in my Custodes thread and posting here to meet any requirements for the challenge. Looks like there are some pretty awesome vows and an incredible number of participants. Best of luck to everyone! VAGABOND
I was considering buying the Chapterhouse kit for my budgies but changed my mind because I heard there was alot of conversion work to be done and that some of the parts didn't fit properly? Honda
All I can say is that although the modeling is a little more complex than the straight kit, it's not something that you would find out of your reach. You're already a kit basher, so it isn't that far of a stretch. It is more effort, but in the end I felt that the extra effort was worth it. If you decided to go that route, I'd definitely share what I learned to make it easier...which when I think about it, was really what took the longest bit for me, which was figuring out how to make it work. Don't get into something that you really aren't sure of, but don't let it intimidate you either. I really wanted that look, so it was just a matter of figuring it out. Brother-Captain Sharp
Except we don't fail. Ever. That's why we protect the Emperor. Yeah, that's why he's never gotten hurt, and is completely hale... oh wait- Looks like a great start. That kit completely changes the Storm Raven for me. Its awesome. Honda
Except we don't fail. Ever. That's why we protect the Emperor. Yeah, that's why he's never gotten hurt, and is completely hale... oh wait- Hey, we "let" that Horus stuff happen so it would be easier to protect him. Used to be he'd run all over the place, visiting Emperor forsaken planets right and left, driving us crazy. Now we know exactly where he is and he isn't going anywhere. He's nice and safe, just the way we want it. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/244878-hondas-2012-lpc-thread/#findComment-2962014 Share on other sites
Honda
A quick update. The bodies of the Ravens are now primered http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9424.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9425.jpg While I was there, I primer'd a Landraider as I plan on having at least one in the force. Then I thought I would experiment with a color... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9417.jpg So what's wrong with that picture...well, the biggest thing I can see is that it doesn't come anywhere close to this.... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9402.jpg Yes, it's gold and there's nothing wrong in and of itself, but it doesn't look anything like GW's Shining Gold. Yeah, I was just thrilled. After staring off at the distance for a bit, I think I've come up with a recovery plan that doesn't require stripping the LR and starting over. We'll see. What that means though is that I won't be using that color on the Storm Ravens. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and get enough bottles of Shining Gold that will allow me to spray them and be done with it. Sigh... And just to make it interesting, I have a doctor's appointment to see if I need shoulder surgery for a rotator cuff tear that's been making things rather entertaining, like David Lynch kind of entertaining, not that ponce Depp fellow entertaining. The part I'm really thrilled about is the potential 4-6 months of rehab. Is that going to stop me from completing my vow? Absolutely not. I don't know how I'll get it done, but I will. In the immortal words of Billy Crystal "Piece of cake". <cookie for the one that guesses the movie> FOR THE EMPEROR!!! Honda
Quick update: 1. Yep, arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder is coming to a theatre near me...rather soon. As it stands, I'd rather get the unpleasant bit over with and start moving on to the healing bit rather than put this off. The MRI was a real trip. I kept asking the technician "where are you beaming me to?" He being bored stiff having done this a thousand times before, just kept nodding like "I'll be nice to you because I have to". Very pleasant guy, but I think being the last appointment of the day makes you a bit less responsive. 2. So, with that news, I rushed out today to get enough Shining Gold paint to spray. Guess what? My store only had two bottles. Sigh...<not going to make this easy are we>. So after fiddling around I ended up getting two bottles of SG, and two bottles of Dwarven Bronze and I'm going to mix those together to derive a darker version of Shining Gold. It will make the vehicles a tad darker than the infantry, but I see that as a good thing, actually. So out of a potential crisis, perhaps there is an opportunity. I also got a bottle of Burnished Gold that I will use for highlights somewhere. 3. Anyway, if I can get the base gold done in the next day or two, then get through the surgery, I'll use the time remaining to motivate me to get the rehab done and I'll do some cross training with my right arm on some tasks and I think I'll make it. It won't be that simple of course. That wouldn't make for much of a story. lol I appreciate all the well wishes, though I do sense that you guys feel worse for my messed up landraider than my shoulder. Honda
Since Photobucket seems to be hacked, I'm going to use BnC folders for the first time... So just before this took place (arthroscopic surgery on rotator cuff and yes, that's a large haematoma on my neck)... I did this... Note that it looks much better than the LR experiment The rest of Storm wing deployed to their hidden mountain top dispersal points... And where this really matters is how it looks matched up with the infantry. I am very happy with how the airbrushing came out (the only way I could have done all this in less than an hour), and the red auto primer really gives the gold a nice base to lay on. The other thing I was a little concerned with was whether or not the Shining Gold + Dwarf Bronze would come out too dark, but it's just enough of a difference that the infantry will still be able to be the focus of the army, but it still all looks like it belongs. Now to finish the SRs off, I'm going to need my arm to loosen up a bit, so I'll probably not be able to resume for a week or so. However, a lot of the depth I'll be adding to the SRs will be airbrushed, which will again expedite the end result and minimize detailing necessary by brush. Also, I need to get the engines finished. They are primed black, but will be sprayed a silver and then detailed out. I think that will keep the gold flying bricks from looking like one big blob of gold. Anyway, I wanted to report that progress has been made despite the obstacles. Honda
Alrighty then...time to check in. First off, I am well ahead of the curve as it relates to healing and use of the arm. I can lift it up perpendicular to my body directly to the front and about 10 degrees from perpendicular on the side. Which is awesome, thank you God! Most people are still in the "keep it immobile" stage at this point with potentially several weeks of that still ahead. Not having to wait for a torn muscle(s) to heal (it was only "abraided" enough to make me weep) is a huge deal. So, I have a reasonable amount of movement, though picking up things from the table level requires effort (and a bit of squealing if we're being honest), but doable. Overhead reaching is still not possible and is something I will have to strive for. And although I did figure out how to put underarm deodorant on both sides with one arm (try it some time), it's nice to be able to use both. I know, TMI. I still have three holes in my shoulder cap, which I was reminded of when I accidentally leaned against a table edge, so reality is never far away, but it's nice to at least be walking down the recovery path. I do still have enough purple on me from bruises to qualify for Hawk Lords induction. Still, nothing is free, so that means that hobby stuff, which is good because it gets me using my arm, is still a bit of a workout....plus I have to keep straightening out my arm as the bicep tends to tighten up. So, with that out of the way, here be progress. I've done most of the detailing except for the headlights...and as you'l see, I am using artist charcoal as a weathering powder to provide the definition in the recess work. This tends to make the models a tad grimier/worked, but that's Ok. It helps them look less like a big blob of gold and lets features on the model stand out. Bulk shot http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9438.jpg SR without charcoal treatment http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9441.jpg SR with...note, I still have to do the sides of the fuselage http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9439.jpg And the tools I used http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9442.jpg Next steps: 1. Finish applying the powder to all the SRs 2. The engines have their silver base coat on, so I need to weather them up as well 3. Attach said engines 4. Finish up the last detailing bits 5. Seal (Krylon flatte clear) 6. Do a tad of airbrushing on vents where exhaust should build up a bit. I don't want to do too much of this, but I think the VTOL exhausts and the vents on the top of the wings should get a bit. Getting closer to the end and it looks like I am well positioned for the finish. Stay tuned! C&C appreciated. Honda
HOOAH! I am very jazzed to be able to present to you my Custodes Storm Wing...first some final prep work shots Silver engines http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9443.jpg At which point, Captain Obvious walked up and said, "Boy, those sure are shiny". Thank you Captain....so a darkening effort was undertaken with washes et al, but the exhaust cones just weren't coming out the way I wanted them to. Grr...so...I wet brushed them with Chaos Black, then Boltgun, then re-applied a mix of Badab Black + Devlan Mud and eventually got here... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9445.jpg No, that's not a bouquet of flowers from the Adeptus Mechanicus...actually I meant here... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9448.jpg So with the last bit of painting done, I inserted the engines into their "bays" and we're off to the races...Formation flying http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9451.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9454.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9453.jpg Solo flight... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9455.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9457.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9458.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Custodes/DSCN9459.jpg I'm still trying to figure out if the gold body + metal engines works. I think it does as early comments from family members who depend on me to feed them have been favorable. A couple of the joins to the body with the stand aren't as solid as I would prefer, so I think I'll end up adding a pin in there to give it some strength. So there you go. It has been a very interesting ride and my arm still tightens up on me from time to time, so I may add some detailing later. Also, after they've been in a game, I'll add some exhaust build up to a few areas. I was going to do that before, but at this point I am making the assumption that they are freshly unboxed and haven't been on a combat mission yet. :) Soon I'll be bringing 3 heavily armed (TL-lascannons + Nose ML) metal objects, aka the Emperor's Great Displeasure, crashing into heretics and scum, only to then unload some Custodes Ginsu love to the amusement of...me. I think. Anyway, thanx for all the support through this and I wish everyone else on their LPCs the best of luck. Now, it's back to those Custodes for me... MeatGrinder
Honda, it's good to see you back in the painting chair again and I hope your surgery went well and that you heal quickly and properly. I love the colour of your ravens. That gold is an amazing shade. Was It just a mix of bronze and gold? It could just be your camera, but I find the turbines on the ravens a bit too bright for such a well-oiled piece of machinery. What are your thoughts on darkening them? A few washes of badab might give them a good darkened look. Honda
@MG: Thanx for the well wishes, it's been interesting, but I am at least moving in the right direction. :) I love the colour of your ravens. That gold is an amazing shade. Was It just a mix of bronze and gold? Yes, one bottle each + 60 drops of water. I do want to say one thing though. Do not underestimate the value of starting from a "red" base, i.e. the auto primer. I think that in a large part, that is why the gold is coming out the way it is, which is rich and warm. I suspect that you could get away with black primer, but you would then need to put a foundation in using something like Bestial Brown. So it can be done, but I do think the the red primer is providing the depth to the gold. I think we'll see that effect again when I move back over to the Custodes thread, as they were based with the same red primer. It could just be your camera, but I find the turbines on the ravens a bit too bright for such a well-oiled piece of machinery. What are your thoughts on darkening them? A few washes of badab might give them a good darkened look. No, I do think you are on to something. There is a very light brownish tint to the mid-body of the engine and a thinned coat on the front nacelle and interior of the turbines, but the pictures (which are not that great) do make the front bit look quite "bright" and I need to make sure that is not the case. So will go back and revisit that piece. Thanx for the tip. Gunrunr
Wow Honda, those Storm Ravens look amazing!!!! The colors look good together but what realy brings out the model is your use of charcoal dusting. How do you keep the charcoal from rubbing off? Some people have posted that the silver on the engines is too bright. They are maybe just a little, but I feel if you just add more weathering to them then they would be just fine. One other thing you can do is add a little more detail to them by maybe painting some of the piping on them black or just try to darken up some of the panels so that it looks like the engines get worked on from time to time. Over all its a great job. It's also nice to hear that your shoulder is on the road to recovery. We don't need anything getting in the way of our dice throwing now do we?
