D-USA
Been playing Raven Guard for a while, and I have always felt that the Vanilla Space Marine Codex is a pretty good fit for the Ravens. Good variety of Scout options (Storm, Bikes, variety of Scout weapon options, etc...). I have also been working on a True Scale Heresy Era Raven Guard Army and after finishing "Deliverance Lost" I started to feel like the Space Wolves Codex might be a pretty good representation of the organization of the Raven Guard after Istvaan V and Corax's attempt to rebuild the Raven Guard: He organized what would be the Tactical Squads into the Talons, which would be represented by Grey Hunters. Represented by wearing MK III, IV, and V armor. The newly created scouts were headstrong and over eager to get into combat and in their first fight were described as taking needless risks to get into combat. Instead of wearing Scout Armor the Raptors were given the first shipment of the new MK VI armor. So even though they are new recruits they wear PA. So it seems like Blood Claws would be a perfect fit for them. Build the entire unit out of MK VI armor and you are good to go. I have some True Scale Scouts I have been working on so I would probably keep them included to represent the older "traditional" scouts that started the process before Corax created the new Raptors. BS4 Sniper Rifles are also nice. So what do you guys think? Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
well, most people are going to say "go for it, its your army". so now thats outta the way, as a Wolf and Raven Guard player, i wouldnt do it. the events you are describing happen in one encounter, and after being trolled by the Alpha Legion, Corax's project was shut down. the wolf codex is great for playing the Wolves way, but doesnt translate into the precision tactics of the Raven Guard. Valerian
Let's see: Long Beaks, Lone Crows, Thundercrow Cavalry, Raven Lords, Raven Priests, etc. Sure, why not? WLK I have played Raven Guard for quite a while, so I agree that a 40K era Raven Guard would not fit the Space Wolves Codex at all. I know people like playing Blood Angels with Raven Guard and I don't even like that. I think for "modern" Raven Guard the Vanilla Codex is the best fit. I would only play this as a Heresy Era Raven Guard. Even after Corax's project was shut down, he still had the Raptors and continued to use them. So I think at the time, having to make due with what he had, it seems like a decent fit. But I also see Corax and the Raven Guard returning to their traditional roots as they are restored to full strength. It would only be a stop gap measure, which seems fitting with the SW Codex. Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
the first batch of Raptors were...overly aggressively, but as Branne noted, its only because they arent properly trained yet. this was mere weeks after their creation and their first real taste of combat. He even says that they took losses they shouldnt have, and only Corax's enthusiam shuts Branne down. with the project ended, and no mroe rapid supply of Marines, i believe Corax would have enforced discipline on the Raptors. They needed to fight now to preserve both themselves and the Imperium, to become true Raven Guard. so, for a brief period, i believe you could stretch the Wolf codex to fit the 30k RG. But as the trolls of 30k stopped the process, it changes how the Raptors operate. infact, they became so true to the RG method of warfare the 40k Raptors are super ninjas also. (in the IA rules, they even get Stealth!) D-USA
Very true, in Deliverance Lost Corax assigned Talons to the Raptors to basically "stop them being stupid". I think if I go through with a thematic force build around the time of Deliverance Lost and shortly afterwards I would include Wolf Guard to assign to the squats to symbolize the experienced Talons assigned to the Raptors to cool their heads and give them some battlefield guidance. This would really be just a thematic force set in the Heresy Era. When playing regular 40K games with them I can use the Raptors as regular Assault Marines (maybe magnetize their packs so that I can use Jump Packs if needed).
