Black Templar Chaplain

Araziel

Recommended Posts

I've posted this in the WIP section, but thought I'd show him here as well.

Last night, I kitbashed this Templar Chaplain using the following parts;

Head - CSM "Tactical" sprue. The skull head.

Torso - Templar sprue.

Left arm/powersword - Templar sprue.

Right arm - Blood Angel Death Company sprue (held a bolt pistol).

Right hand - SM Tactical Command sprue (poweraxe hand).

Crozius - Poweraxe haft, skull ornamentation - Khorne Berzerker sprue (chain cut off).

Backpack - Templar sprue.

Legs - running Blood Angels Death Company sprue.

Purity seals - various sources (SM sprue, Templar sprue + GK sprue).

Iron Halo - metal SM Terminator Chaplain.

Skull on spike (base) - CSM "Tactical" sprue.

I've wanted to build a custom Chaplain for a while, and after just finishing a re-read of Helsreach the other day, decided I would finally do just that.

I still need to fix some wings to the Crozius to form the "hammer" shape, and I'm thinking of using the Aquila from the SM Rhino kit.

Opinions?

You can indeed, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to until the weekend - I'm at my girlfriend's house right now and could had to choose between bringing my Xbox and my models - I need a bigger geek bag!

For the time being though, I can tell you that it fits very snuggly in the neck join area. The mouth of the helm has a row of pointed teeth sculpted in, with the only downside being that the armoured collar on the torso obscures this from view. A little unfortunate, as this was the main reason I chose to use that head in particular, but couldn't be helped as I only had one Templar torso at the time of building.

While waiting for an updated photo, I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

I'm in the process of collecting various bits for a couple of custom dudes...EC, Marshall, and Chappy. You've given me some good pointers. Thanks!

No problem. I will forwarn you about the Death Company bitz though - while they may seem great at first, it took me ages to decide which parts to use, they have a LOT of BA iconography, which is understandable obviously, but if you don't pick your pieces wisely you may have a hard job of it.

Now to get a box of Sanguinary Guard to build myself an Emperor's Champion...

looks good however more pics for sure I also have a DIY Chaplin if you wouldn't mind me posting some pics of it in your thred I'd like to get your opinions on it (don't want you to feel I'm trying to hijack your thred B) ) If you would rather I start my own thred I would be happy to B)

I will say I went with more skulls on mine but I really like the very BT look to yours.

Hahahaha, xbox at your girlfriends house? Must be playing skyrim or something. XP

Be warned Araziel if using the sang guard chest plates please for the emperors sake file those stupid nerps off the damn thing or you'll be left wide open to copius amounts of mocking and a possible paddling :)

btw got two kitbashed chappies myself one made from one of the masters of the chapter and posed as if issing last rites before bashing some heretics face in with his chozius and the other posed with the kneeling legs from from the devi spru checking on a fallen brother .

Warrenstorm - go for it!

Trignama - thanks man :)

B-S-D - Gears of War 3, actually ;)

Glaeken - No worries, I'm mainly after the weapons and legs the kit comes with. All my characters will have Templar torso's, especially if I'm using BA bits all over the place.

I wouldn't want my guys to start crying over a dead Angel now, would I? :)

Edit -

Glaeken, I like the idea if a kneeling, rite giving Chaplain to a fallen knight. I may well be borrowing that ;)

Time to be cheeky and make this a double post.

As the praise I have gotten here on the B+C goes to my head and makes me want to build a small, themed force of Black Templars to accompany this guy, now named Uriel, Master of Sanctity I thought I'd ask you're advice on something.

First up, Banners.

Now, I know banners have no effect for the BTs, but I want to include them anyway. What do you guys think of some of these designs?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/hammerofwaughmin...1.c0.m270.l1313

I'd be using them in Initiate, Terminator and Assault squads.

Second up, Emperor's Champion.

Would this blade form a suitable base for the Black Sword, in you're opinion? (middle, top row - two handed.)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Space-Marine-Blo...#ht_1432wt_1392

I would obviously file down the BA icon's here and replace with Templar crosses, have no fear.

I'm also considering FW Veteran armour for him. Make the suit look so old I can write fluff saying it originally came from an Imperial Fist Captain who fell during the Siege of the Imperial Palace during the Heresy. Thoughts?

Araziel, with that sword you can do alot. Kneeling in prayer, stabbing through an opponent pinning him to the ground.. alot. I like those. As for banners... why dont you make your own? Some WHF models have blank banners that will be distinct and you can paint on.

I had considered that... but honestly, I'm not great at free handing, so that would present a bit of a problem.

The most I've done in this field is painting blue psychic flames up the back of my mates Castellan Crowe's cloak, and the Nurgle fly icon's on the Rhino in the thread found in my sig.

That's why I thought I'd nab some sculpted banners, and those in particular seem very cost effective - I'd be paying the same amount for blank WHFB banners.

I'm glad the sword is approved though, because I've already bidded on that set :cuss

Another double post? Naughty me. But luckily, I have new pictures this time - so, hopefully, all will be forgiven.

As requested by Templar14, here is a photo that shows how the helmet fits into the torso;

I also decided to take some more pictures from different angles;

I've also started work on the Crozius hammer. I've added the Eagle head from the Cities of Death overhanging optional Imperial Aquila;

I'll be filling the gap with some green stuff obviously, but its now been started.

As for the rest of the Crozius, I'm going to order a pair of SM Rhino Aquila bitz from eBay. I'm going to glue them back to back, cut out the skull, then fix each wing to either side of the Eagle head on the haft here. If that makes sense?

That'll have to wait a while until I get paid though (I know a pair of bitz aren't much, but I also want to order some stuff for my WIP Nurgle army).

I know this next picture is difficult to see properly, but try as I might, I couldn't get a better shot to save my life. I blame the winter weather for terrible light.

I'm going to use this as an objective marker when (well, that should really be "if") I get a small force together. I'm in the process of painting it to resemble a fallen Emperor's Champion, in a way that reveals golden armour beneath all the paint scratches - another nod to the Helsreach novel.

And finally, I'm still winning the auction for the Sanguinary Guard power weapons on eBay. If I get outbid, I'm not going to enter a bidding war - I'll just order the two handed sword I want for the same price I'm currently winning the set for.

So, what do you think?

Excellent looking Chaplain! Great use of parts to make him, looks real menacing & full of righteous zeal!!!!

Thanks very much, brother.

I must say, I never expected this level of praise for him. I've been updating my Death Guard WIP alongside him, and nobody has commented on them at all! :)

Maybe its a sign to return to the light of the Emperor?

I really want to just keep adding and adding to him, but I know that I shouldn't do that. He'll end up looking like a muppet.

There have been mentions of him needing more skulls though, so perhaps I'll look into that - any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Some good ideas. I've see those banners before on the HiTech website. Some of them could def be used...I really wish, though, that these "bitsy" companys would do some more BT inspired bits. I'm sure that will happen once our new dex hits the shelves and the BTs are once again on top of the 40k collectors list. So many things out there right now are geared towards "angelic" themed junk...even the "darkies" have more hooded skeletal stuff than there is templar. I do like the open book hitech banner for a designated chappy standard bearer...that could turn out nicely. The flaming skull is pretty awesome too. I like your it bashing! Good stuff.

Really great work on the Chaplain!

I agree with you on the banners. i seem to remember a company that made really good cloth Templar banners. Let me see if I can find it and I'll pass along the link

I would totally be in you're debt if you could forward that link, brother.

I couldn't agree with you more. Like you said, I'm sure all these websites will explode with Templar-looking bits once the new Codex gets officially announced/released. I think I may hold off on purchasing the banners for this very reason.

Well, by that I mean that I can't wait for Templar-themed sculpts to come out, and that I'll take a second, more careful look through the banners I found and only buy one or two of them :lol:

On another note, I've been searching the internet again.

I think I may be tempted in to purchasing some of these;

http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?a...ight_relief.jpg

http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?a...der_pads_01.jpg

... anything to help make the guys stand out more.

I think the shoulder pads will almost be a given. I like the FW stuff, but I'd end up wanting to buy multiple sets - and the FW pads are a little too unique, each in they're own way, to pull off across an army IMO.

EDIT;

Just found an awesome selection of scenic bases made by a company called Base-X-War. Now, I present to you the base set I think I'm going to use -

"Ancient Necropolis";

http://www.base-x-of-war.com/html/40k_anci...olis_bases.html

I thought these would be very fitting in light of the new "the Necrons stole our High Marshall's hand!" fluff.

I just checked out the Ancient Necropolis stuff you put a link to, very nice! Will have to add some of those to my 'wanted' list.

Everyone has their own ideas on thinkgs but personally I think if you add too much more you are right, he will look like a muppet. Some times less is more:). Can't wait to see this badboy all painted up!!!! The more I look at the crozius the more it!

Thanks very much B)

I think I may add a chain on a skull to the end of the Crozius haft, but after that he'll be done - unless I decide to add a cloak.

I'm going to have to think long and hard about how I paint him. Black is a colour I've always had difficulty painting, to the point where I've just sprayed a model in power armour black and called it done, spending extra time on the details.

I have thought about mixing up a boltgun/black mix, with around 5-10% boltgun, the rest black and layering that over the armour. On the other side, I've thought about spraying the model a dark grey and washing him several times with badab black ink.

Decisions, decisions...

The more I look at those bases, the more I think "this is it. I'm going to get them."

It's a shame, I really like the look of the tech bases - I could theme the force around a space hulk boarding party that way, but the lack of variety really doesn't bode well for an infantry heavy force. I'd end up having all my marines walking down identical hallways, with the same power cables hanging over each of their heads.

Nah, I think I'm going to join the "kill the Necrons!" crusade.

Oh... wow. When you said "cloth", I assumed sculpted cloth, like WHFB banners. Not real cloth... I may well be adding these to the force, thanks a bunch!!
