Alternate SW scheme: Grey or Steel?

Ho there Sons of Russ,

I've been a SW since 2nd Ed, took some time off from 40k a few years ago (just before 4th came out) and am now coming back a bit into it.

I've never been a big fan of the post RT-era traditional blue-grey color SWs adopted, I did use that scheme for years, but now that I am actually building a new army, I'd like to do something different with it..

Looking at the artwork for them in the last several years, a couple alternatives seem to have popped up.

The more a "less blue more grey", the pre-Heresy darker Grey and occasionally a sort of metallic look that I guess would be easiest to maybe call "steel"?

Some wiki links along the lines of what I am talking about:

pre-Heresy grey: http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/image...lfen_Marine.jpg

close to the metallic style: http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/image.../Long_Fangs.jpg

These are all pretty cool too:

I know "it is my army I can do whatever I want to with it" but I am a bit undecided at this point on which way to go and thought I'd get some feedback on what some of you thought of these two schemes, Wolf Brother to Wolf Brother, what "looks right?"

I think I am leaning maybe a bit more towards the steel color with gold accents, but it'll need to come out dark enough not to look like GKs.

Posted this in the SW section rather than the Painting section as I am not looking for advice on the "how" of painting them as much as having an actual alternative to the blue-grey and still being true Space Wolves.

Cheers!

Hmmm... that's maybe not a bad idea, could help Characters and WG really stand out, but I'd be a little worried it might break the uniformity of the army

Then again, if I did include some Blood Claws I could even pain them in the currently more traditional Blue-Grey colors too...

uniformity? it's not a huge issue unless you make it one, as I've seen several wolf armies out there led by several wolf priest (painted in black) and yet the army still looks just as great. Remember, members of the rout are as individualistic as each great company differs from one another. It's all about character! those who lead, should at least stand out from the crowd.

Ohh and BTW, welcome to the Fang!

Yeah, my Blood Claws' armour is painted space wolves grey, my Grey Hunters are half-and-half sw grey and darkened codex grey, and my Wolf Guard and HQ units are all codex grey (except for Wolf Priests, who are obviously in black), and I'd say the army still looks cohesive.
What you call "steel" only looks like blued stone (or ceramite) to me. Standard to any blue-grey or grey-grey paint scheme where the only metallic I see are the gold embellishments. Imo every SW player that takes to non-metallic paint schemes still has a slight reflectiveness to the models (due to the sheen from the acrylic) combines with the texture of the applied paint.

Steel sounds cool. I've painted mine in codex gray. The one thing that I hear is "neat models, when you gonna paint 'em" (codex gray looks like gray plastic). So then a battle ensues and usually more glory to the Fang as a result.

As far as not looking too much like Grey Knights, I usually paint black then dry brush. If you wanted it darker yet you could use the black wash on it.

Welcome back to the Fang.

Thanks guys!

I think I will go with the "steel" look and gold accents, I'll try it out first on some HQ and WG models and see how I feel about it.

I think maybe it will help making them more "my Space Wolves". B)

As spacewolflars said, Codex Grey does look rather a lot like the gray plastic, so that right there gives me a pretty good idea of what they will look like (missing picked out details of course) if I decided to go the darker/less blue (Codex) Grey.

re: Wulfebane, it is true, those linked pics don't totally screme "steel" (vs "shiny ceramite") but they were the easiest pics I could find along those lines. When I got to looking for them I realised it was probably more an idea inspired by some of the artists making Marine Power Armor look more metalic overall that got me going on the idea.

(This seems to pop up from time to time with several of the different chapters.)

I'll still keep the SW blue-grey in mind if I do any BCs and Scouts will probably end up Codex Grey as they shouldn't be all shiny when they're sneaking around, haha.

I've been a little tempted to do a small Carcharodons/Space Sharks force some time, and if there really is a "30k" or I decide to blow some cash on for FW stuff to get older Armor Mk styles I'd probably do a Luna Wolves one, so there are several chances at doing grey right there.

A good steel and gold scheme might really make my Wolves pop next to them, so they know who the Alpha Wolf is. :tu:

Cheers Wolf Brothers!
