Nurgle Warband Army Blog (updated 6-7)

So, I've been sitting on 2 armies and change worth of models for the better part of 5 years, and I finally want to get everything table ready (a grand choice since 5th edition is winding down and I'll have to rejigger everything come 6th but oh well) so I'll be blogging the process of bringing my 3 armies to fruition here. What I currently have is an almost complete Dark Angels Deathwing (just need to do some more assembly, and fair bit more painting), a mostly nurgle CSM army, and the start of a plain jane space marine army.

 

The idea for this force is that each book represents a different facet of the army. This is a warband largely consisting of members of the Death Guard who are following a traitor marine sorcerer. He also has the allegiance of a group of Fallen Dark Angels who follow his army. While some of the fallen are corrupted, most do not follow the dark gods.

 

The Dark Angels Deathwing is probably closest to being fielded (I have ~20 terminators completely painted, the rest are almost completely assembled or completely assembled). I have a pair of attack bikes and land speeders, 6 bikes as well as some dreads that can go with this force. The CSM are not far behind, and I will probably get them on the table soonest. The Space Marines I haven't put as much thought into.

 

I assembled a large number of these models already, and I am making extensive use of magnets to keep this army's options open (I am not getting screwed when editions change!). I also built a lightbox last night, so these are my first pics in the new setup! Without further adieu:

This is my first 5 man squad, I am building them as 5 man squads currently but they will be painted and magnetized so that I can reorganize them if running bigger squads makes sense in different situations.

 

I will be photographing what is already built over the next week or so, and finishing off building my marines over the next few months, I am waiting for warm weather (in MD) to prime my models.

I have managed to photograph a bit more of the army:

 

These are the first 5 of a ten man squad of raptors (they double as berzerkers by switching out their jet packs). The champion with lightning claws is going to get magnetized so he can be a zerker hq, he also is (I think) the model that will serve as my Khorne Lord with Lightning claws. In the fluff he was the champion of a world eaters war band that engaged my sorcerer, who unleashed a plague that decayed much of what was left of their insane minds, making them pliable to direct psychic control. He made them his personal guard and their champion has become and unstable beast, mutating out of control as a result of the disease:

Argh, I had a whole post written up and lost it! I'm attempting a rewrite now:

 

So part of the plan with my marines is to have a somewhat narrative army, one that changes over time. I want to reintroduce some of the concepts I found in the Realms of Chaos books I read when I was a kid (what originally got me into the hobby, my stepdad had them). I want to have squads who are wiped out potentially dead, victories in battle or in combat rewarding my champion with greater skills and eventually daemonhood, the potential to turn into a chaos spawn for champions and HQ's, that sort of thing. It'll get me playing the game again (which I'd sorely like to do) and its more the role playing aspect of gaming that I like. The current book does a poor job of representing this level of detail, but I can always try! Plus of models die its an excuse to create new ones. I don't plan on fielding (or naming) my dreads until I lose a few models in battle to bring back. I'm also not running my daemon prince until my sorcerer earns enough renown to ascend. I would like to eventually make a Mortarion DP, since my Daemons list has 3 Nurgle Daemon Princes and I'd rather not have any duplicate models amongst them. I'm including a shot of my Great Unclean One below, who I've never run in a CSM list but would love to try.

I am also building models for 6 5 man CSM squads with melta/combimelta, in case i need to fill in cheap troop squads. They also have the option of being equipped as enhanced CSM, I have some marines in those squads with robes on and cypher's backpack, those models will have the icon for their squad, equipped as enhanced csm with icon of Khorne. I just put together the HQ as well, I made a scythe out of plasticard and gave him the tech marine harness that fabius bile uses. I also just put together a Kharne model i got on ebay that I may try out in a few games, probably with the enhanced marines list.

I really love this model, he is my death guard dread, only a plague marine can enter that sarcophagus (and boy, is he into taking trophies, there are supposed to be 2 more heads greenstuffed to the hook on the back but they fell off and need to be reattached)

 

The body is painted with my plague marine color scheme, which is whitewashed green with patches of flesh (And a currently painted fly icon on the left leg)

Wow, long time no post! I have made a great deal of progress, but I'm still missing a name for the warband. These were shot in the light box with a new background I found via Rust in the City.

 

I've completed and started painting the HQ and a squad of PM's (3 pictured here). The plan is to touch up the trim and handle the metallics/details next. I'm also planning to hit the white areas with a bit more watered down white so the stripes aren't as prominent:

I also am working on (he's still heavily work in progress) Mortarion, my 2nd Daemon prince. The first one is, I think, the previous Lord of this warband. He ascended, killing half their men in the process, and the sorcerer asserted control in the power vacuum. I have a lot more back story figured out for them, but that will be dealt with elsewhere.

This is the Sergeant of my 1st CSM Squad, a chaos lord model I found in a bin at my local game shop. I really loved his pose, and his Combi Melta looks really unique. I like the idea of my sergeants being fairly impressive, so using a Lord body is a great start:

Here's Squad 2's sergeant (I will be coming up with names for these gents once they are painted) and he has the option of either a CCW or a power fist, his Combi Melta was made by cutting the clip off the bottom, as well as the grip, and adding a combi-melta part I got from Chapterhouse. My summer class did just start, so I want to get them primed ASAP before I get bogged down.
