New to Space Wolves

Hello!

I am primarily a GK and regular Marines Player. But because I love small specialist army’s I thought I would give Logan Wing a try. Ok, it may have something to do with me being a beer drinking, sword fighting, knife throwing, axe shopping Viking swede as well ;).

So what is some good solid advice for a new Logan Wing player? I personally love to play with Deathstars, are Wolf Guard Deathstars any god? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

My thoughts on a list that I think would fit me would be as follows.

HQ:

Logan.

Njarl.

Runepriest: Terminator Armor, chooser of the slain, Living Lightning, Murderess hurricane

Battle leader: combi-melta, Frost Blade, saga of the hunter.

Troops:

Wolf guards Terminators x5: Arjax, 1x Cyclone, 1x Storm Shield and Chain Fist, 1x Stormshield, 1x combi-melta Wolf Claw.

Wolf Guards x5: 1x Terminator Armor and Cyclone.

Wolf Guards x5: 5x Combi-Plasma, Drop pod

Wolf Guards x5: 5x Combi-Melta, Drop pod.

One Nasty blob that slowly advances while popping rhinos, one troop choice to hold the home objective while still giving fire support, and two precision squads that can take objectives, draw fire, kill a Land Raider or a terminator squad in one shooting faze.

I would make a couple of suggestions :

1. Your WGBL - give him a Wolf Claw instead of a Frost Blade. A re-rolling Str4 wounds better than a Str 5, it will also give you the option to re-roll hits if needed and save you 5 points. The primary reason to take a FW over a WC is for the +1A when paired with another CCW which you don't have.

2. Why are you giving him SotH? Is it just for the +1 Cover save from Stealth?

3. I assume the three "WG X5" squads are Power Armor? If so - you would be better off fielding Grey Hunter squads for the two without TDA. They would cost fewer points, and the special weapon would be better and less expensive than 5 Combi-s.

Don't take this the wrong way but....

I'm bored of Logan wing, Draigowing, everyotherplaytestedtofineperfectionnetlistwing armies.

On another note...

WELCOME TO THE FANG. Leave the GK anal rod at the door and enjoy some ale, elk and banter. Oh, and this ones free..

@ MeatGrinder.

My thought was that all the IC’s would join Arjax’s squad and fir 2 missiles and 2 D6 Living lightning as they move up with improved cover. A transport would not allow them to do that… That does not mean a land raider wouldn’t be better though…

I pass on the TWC thou, they have too few special weapons. Only two of them can have a Power fist ore wolf claw right?

Best SW deathstar I've seen so far was:

TW-Lord with Frostblade/Wolf Claw, Storm Shield, 2+ armour, tail talisman, tooth necklace and either Warrior Born or Bear

4x TWC with 1 hammer/BP, 1 CCW/BP, 1 BP/storm shield and 1 Bolter(/or CCW/BP + Bombs).

Effective in CC, cheap for a deathstar (around 460 pts.) and ways more effective than any LR+content for a similar price. And they can be in CC turn 2 and WON'T be totally crippled when their steel coffin blows up in your deployment zone...

Deathstars are great... as long as they won't mean an auto lose when you've just lost the unit because you've spent more than 50% of your points for it...

@Alexander: And you'll kill 2 enemy vehicles at best and then you'll either get shot to pieces or get assaulted by CC-specialists...

Not to mention that you'll be pretty much forced to deploy them turn 1 in each and every game, even if you play against armies which lack vehicles (eg tyranids) as you don't want to have such a fragile and short ranged unit footslogging across the field. Of course it's great against Mech forces, but compared to a "good" deathstar an "awesome" deathstar should be able to play it's role against anything you might face. After all you're building your list around it.

@Ragnar_Blackmane -> I'm figuring you mean that his TWL should take either Frost Blade OR Wolf Claw and SS - he can't take all 3 - if that was what you meant then fair enough - just wanted to clear it up.

Also the key problem with this deathstar - if you come up against the likes of DE or Eldar and they spam the likes of Dark Lances/Splinter Cannons for DE or Bright Lances/Starcannons for Eldar.

Eldar - you're looking at lots of fire that will ignore the riders SV and wipe them out - they may have a combined mass of 11 Wounds - but for the points cost = 540pts (TWL with FB/SS, Necklace, Talisman, RA and SoTWB + 4x TWC with 3x BP, 1x SS, 1x TH, 1x BG and 2x MBs) - Eldar can fit out = 2x 10 Guardians + Starcannon (105pts per = 210), 2 Falcons with Pulse Laser/Starcannon/Twin-Shuriken Catapults and still buy a Support Platform with a D-Cannon = full total 540 Points and 5 AP2 shots (4 with 36" 2 Shots and 1 with G24" Blast) - plus the 2 Pulse Lasers (48" S8 AP2).

Dark Eldar = 3 Ravagers 2 with Disintegrator Cannons, 1 with Dark Lances = 315pts, 3x 3 Trueborn each with 2 Splinter Cannons = 168pts total = 483 Points (leaving 57 Points) - and that's with 9 AP2 Shots and 12/18 AP5 Poisoned (4+ Wounding) Shots - all those shots are 36" - meaning that by turn 2 they could devastate the TWC.

I wasn't meaning it as an anti - merely showing what two similar forces can produce - admittedly for them the key downside is ofcourse it's 4-5 unit choices taken out so that's kinda good.

I have played the melta/logan drop before and found it works quite well depending on the opponent - I've seen a logan/heavy bolter/TDAWG (with AC/SS) that was a beast vs an ork horde army.

It would be interesting to see how a PC/Logan Drop would work.

Keep going brother :)
