BROTHERS OF THE FANG!

For many a moon have I stared skywards at the cliffs of Asaheim, praying to the gods of Fenris that I would one day be worthy of the honour of walking amongst the sky warriors. Finally after years of countless battles and victories the great wolf priests came for me. My brothers, let us drink a sea's equivalent of ale whilst you bestow upon this whelp the legends of the sons of Russ!

Translation:

Hey dudes,

Been lurking here for a while, started collecting space wolves at the start of the year, would be great if I could get some advice, tips, help and general tactics on how Space Wolves are best utilised. I have a fair few questions so even if you can only answer one of them that's still greatly appreciated :cuss

I'm aiming to go straight to 2000 point games as all my mates and most of meta only games at that level and above. Just in the process of building up an army.

1) TDAWG, these were the models that drew me to SW. I've been playing nids for the last year and they're squishy as hell, so of course the 2+5++ was an instant win. I got a box of these for chrissy, already decked them out as follows

Twin WC

TH/SS

SB/PW

SB/CF

AC/WC

Should I get to pulling these guys apart and rekitting them or is this a "not so bad" loadout? I was planning on throwing some kind of TDA wolf lord/rune priest with these guys in a redeemer.

2) One of my favourite units in any marine army has always been devastators, from what I've seen, Wolves utilise this the best out of any marine chapter with their split fire ability. My plan was to take 2 squads of 2ML and 2PC with a squad leader all in a TWLC razorback. Would this be a wise move?

3) 10 x GH in a rhino, subbing out a guy for a character wherever necessary. I was thinking of running 3 of these squads and throw in a variety of special weapons leaning more towards plasma guns.

4) Wolf scouts look awesome, I was playing with numbers yesterday and for 100 points getting a meltagun and 3 melta bombs with a high possibility of coming in behind the enemy seems to good to pass up. Am I right in thinking this? Is there a better/more optimum loadout?

5) I was toying with the idea of making some solid dakka TDAWG and dropping them in turn 1 in the enemy lines, coupled with the arrival of the scouts, it could cause some serious problems and allow the rest of my force the time it needs to get up in their face.

6) The battalion box seems like a pretty solid investment, especially since I would use everything in it, would you recommend I go for that next?

7) More from a modelling perspective, I'm clueless as to how to base these guys... My nids were on a desert scene, my warriors of choas (fantasy) were on a grassy/snow scene... What looks good with the Space Wolf theme? Besides the obvious choice of snow that is...

Cheers for any help anyone can give me, may russ be with you

welcome to the fang whelp!

the battalion force is a formidable investment, especially since you mentioned you'd like to droppod some wolf guard right into your opponents force. greymage wrote an excellent tactica in a topic here not a long time ago that's definetly something you should read. if you're intding for a more hybrid aproach buying the space wolves battleforce and the normal space marine battleforce is a great option aswell!

anyway, have an ale lad to grease your tongue because by russ you keep on asking things! :cuss

Welcome to the Fang!grab an ale and listen to the eldars tales

ah yes, loken and muntar (taken some liberties), two new whelps for a new bloodclaw pack. guess we'll soon see a lot of new ones once 6th edition hits aswell!

and a few months after that a drop in the BC numbers, right?

let me start out by saying welcome to the fang and have an ale now whelp lets get down to your questions.

not a bad load out for them

you realize you can have 5 guys with heavy weapons right?

3) 10 x GH in a rhino, subbing out a guy for a character wherever necessary. I was thinking of running 3 of these squads and throw in a variety of special weapons leaning more towards plasma guns.

i would go melta guns over plasma for the most part

4) Wolf scouts look awesome, I was playing with numbers yesterday and for 100 points getting a meltagun and 3 melta bombs with a high possibility of coming in behind the enemy seems to good to pass up. Am I right in thinking this? Is there a better/more optimum loadout?

i tend to favor the melta gun and melta bombs and a power weapon and a wolfguard with a thunder hammer and combi melta.

5) I was toying with the idea of making some solid dakka TDAWG and dropping them in turn 1 in the enemy lines, coupled with the arrival of the scouts, it could cause some serious problems and allow the rest of my force the time it needs to get up in their face.
well as the scouts will not arrive until turn 2 or after that could leave them hanging in the breeze for a bit and that will mean that your opponent will be ready when your scouts show up.

6) The battalion box seems like a pretty solid investment, especially since I would use everything in it, would you recommend I go for that next?

pick up a devastator box set and maybe some more gray hunters and any other things you want.

i am planing on doing mine on a grass/sand/ snow base thing i know sounds complicated but that is what i am thinking. but it is all up to you

*drop kicks Arez in the back, pushing him into Muntar and sending them both into a muddled heap on the floor*

"Welcome to the Fang.

By tales of the elders, Greenhorn really ment ramblings of old men. Now do try to keep up if you want to survive you time with us Bloodclaws."

*whispers* "and get ready to duck. There's a hole in Hendriks tankard. No idea how it got there obviously." :tu:

Thanks for the warm welcome brothers!

I will have to have a look at that thread hendrik, as far as hybrid wolves, only really interested in having a pure space wolf model army. I know this will probably cost a little bit more but the look of an army is what's most important to me haha. Going off that I have another question. To get the long fang look I'm guessing you just buy a space wolves pack and get the heavy weapons from other marine sprues?

POSTAL! Thank you for the detailed response! I did indeed know that you could have 5 heavies in a pack, I just forgot :tu:, the scout pack sounds brutal with the wolf guard addition. I also understand that the scouts showing up round 2 isn't a sure thing but I was going to deck the TDAWG out something like this for survivability

2 x combi-plasma/SS

2 x combi-melta

1 x assault cannon

comes in at 270 points with the pod included. Unless my maths is awful...

Thanks again sons of russ! May the blood of your enemies carve deep rivlets through the snow of the battlefield!

haha, whelp i'm not taking about that kind of a hybrid list! i'm talking about non pure mechanised, footslogging or droppodding armies. some people tend to go all the way in a certain aspect, like me. in most of my lists everything is using either a rhino, landraider or a razorback. then there are others who like to put their entire force into droppods, or just have them run over the field. others tend to combine 2 or more of these ways of fighting, leaving them with a partly mechanised, partly droppodding and partly footslogging list. hence i recommended getting the normal space marine force aswell. the space wolf battalion contains enough bits to make the normal space marine models into space wolves and this would get you a rhino and some skyclaws in exchange for the droppod and 5 grey hunters. not a bad deal imo

as for that hole in this tankard forte, i borrowed yours since i was going to hurl it at you anyway!

Rumbled again. Now where'd I put that filler.

As for doing Long Fangs, the devastator box is perfect to mix with the SW sprue. Although, if your following the ML trend then just convert from all the hunter killer missiles that you'll never use on the accessory sprue from any tanks you get.

Heh, blame that noob interpretation on the fact I've only been playing bugs in 40k for the past year ;) my plan was to pretty much tank up everything cept the droppod TDAWG and the Scouts.

I have a few mates who have said they're happy to donate all the unused bits from they're devastator kits, considering 90% of my gaming friends play some race of marines, I should be able to get everything I need to make my LF from just the wolf pack box and the bits. Then ironically crush them after they assist me. Especially that El'Johnson follower...

FOR RUSS!!!

Aye, welcome to the Fang little brother! *slides Mjod over* Drink up and have a seat!

Yes, the BF box is definitely a must, infact, 2 is even better IMO, though some say get the SM box instead. It's all about what you are going to use most.

Also, the Space Wolf upgrade sprue (the old one) that GW sells is also a good investment. Like 5 or so torsos, heads, knives, pelts, Melta Gun, Power Axe and Power fist, you cant go wrong for like what, $8?

Anyways, make yourself at home pup! Take a look around, read up a bit. Be sure to check out Inglorious Drunkards, and have a good time.

Oh, and if Arez tries to start calling you Greenhorn, pay no mind, that's his name. :o

try to magnetize the arms on your fangs so that you can switch weapons when needed

call me greenhorn and you'll never make it to grey hunter

other than that enjoy your stay and dont fall asleep around forte,if you wanna know why i got some picts around here,or as Zynk :)

Your perfectly safe to be passed out around me, eh Greenhorn. Hula skirt ring bells?

there used to be a thread here, dont know if it ever got stickied, but it detailed the best buys when creating a new space wolves army. it started out with the SM battlebox and SW battlebox, devastators, and a SW sprue or 2 if I recall correctly, then added a few Razorbacks or predators which you don't glue, so they can be used as eighter.

as for your other question, the basing, most used would be the snowbase, but since SW are one of those chapters that go EVERYWHERE, modding their bases to look like boardwalks / streets/ floorboards would probably make for a cool effect.

what kind of a table do you play at usually, that's what made me pick a grassland theme for my bases. persoannly i think it rather ridiculous to see a snow based army on things like a desert table

"Where wolves go, winter follows..." :P

Welcome to the Fang Muntar, have an ale on me! You seem to have a decent grasp of tactics from your first post: pairing OBEL wolf scouts with droppoding troops is an excellent way to go. Win many victories for Russ, and make sure to post up a battle report should you smash any Dark Angels :D

Forte, that link is amazing. Just when I thought skyrim was the only thing that could have me glued to a computer screen for hours on end you throw that at me hahaha thanks though, alot of good stuff in there.

Hendrik, my LGS has a ruined city map, a snow map, a grass map and a dessert map. No matter what I base them with they're going to look out of place somewhere ;) was thinking of going with a crumbled landscape feel. Chunks of rubble, gravel, few bits of dead grass and maybe a touch of snow here and there.

Jonas! Thank you brother, I will be sure to post any batreps when I face my DA mate. There's 2 other guys there I know of that play DA and SW so I'm thinking a 4000 vs 4000, Wolf vs Lion will be in the pipeline :P
