Do I need to read the Dark Angels Books?

Hello B&C! Ive been going through all the HH books and I'm up to book 6. From what I've heard, books 6 and 9 are about the Dark Angels and aren't very good. My question is, do I need to read these books to get additional information on the story, or are these books strictly Dark Angels related.

thanks for your help,

Drbro

I myself did not enjoy the first 3/4s of book 6 Descent of Angels. I'm working on book 8 Battle for the Abyss and so far I've seen no tie in to the other books from book 6. Thats not to say that the Dark Angels stories won't tie in later in the series.
I liked Descent, but I'm in the minority there. However, Fallen Angels has gotten a much better reception, but follows on from descent. So I'd say yes, read them. Read each HH book at least once, they're worth it(even battle of the Abyss)

The Dark Angels Heresy novels are ok reads but not exactly that great, they focus on Pre-Imperial Caliban and the rift between Lion and Luthor when the Emperor comes to visit, while not a bad thing for fluff fans it is poorly wirtten however and will take effort to read on to the end, this is my opinion though as others will have enjoyed this.

If you want a good Dark Angel story though then pick up Age of Darkness, it is a short by ADB and is pretty awesome.

Couldn't agree more....In general Age of Darkness is a brilliant collection of short stories.

My advice is to concur with prevous posts and say that whilst not being the best HH books, the 2 DA books are worth reading once (although actually I've read the entire series twice ... yes even Battle for the Abyss!). I imagine there will be another DA book before the end which will tie up the story of the Lion and Luther and Caliban, so it would be worth reading the first 2 for that reason.

I'm working on book 8 Battle for the Abyss

*THIS IS THE POLICE!! Step AWAY from the book!!!! Put The Battle for the Abyss DOWN*

OT - The Dark Angel books whilst a little 'stand alone' compared to the rest of the series and also considered slow paced by many (myself included), I'd say read them anyway. They flesh the First legion out a bit and are probably worth it just for that reason alone. The above mentioned book BftA is a travesty however and should be avoided at all costs.....lest your eyes melt.....

Saa

......or something like that

In my opinion, there were several enough tidbits of interesting info that warrant the reading of those books. I enjoyed both, but Descent was every now and then a bit of a struggle.

drbro1228: BftA was bad because the main characters were overtly generic examples of their Legions. They were outright boring and the writing was mediocre. I still managed to enjoy it, however, which goes beyond my understanding.

Whats so bad about Battle for the Abyss? I haven't read it yet.

Common consensus is it's also a bit naff. I kinda liked it. It made me properly like the World Eaters, for one. For two it shows you what can happen to a ship in the warp if it succumbs to the sea of souls.

My advice to you is this - there will be some books you'll like no matter what anyone else says and others where you won't understand how someone could finish it, that's just the way it is. Personal taste. See if you can borrow the DA books, before you buy them, if you are of two minds about whether or not to read them.

I am a DA fan myself so I may be biased but I really enjoyed descent because it was a departure from the rest of the HH. Its the only book to go in depth to what it was like on a world before the the coming of the Emperor and its overall a good knights tale. Most people seem to think the first 3/4 was crap because it's not about space marines. I think the last 1/4 was crap because it seems like the author was told he had to fit space marines into the book somewhere and it just feels shoehorned in.

Both DA books give info on both the nature of chaos but you also see real info on Librarians that weren't part of the Thousand Sons for once.

I will say that you don't have to reed them in order with the rest of the series. At this point they don't impact the rest of the series although I'm sure they will at a later date. So I would really recommend reading them but they can be after you read books further in the series if you wish, and I would recommend reading both DA books back to back.

I skipped them and came back to them at a later time to read them back to back, and honestly I really enjoyed them. It was a nice break from the series, and gave some inside depth to the DA's (who dont get much love through the HH). You don't NEED to read them to make sense of the rest of the books though.
