Has Anyone used Daemonhosts?

I haven’t, yet, but I am seriously thinking abbot it. I’ve heard about people saying they should be played by themselves in large groups. I think this is rather silly, you just stand or run around and hope to roll the right dice at the right time…

If I use them, I am going to use them in a fire base. If 50% of the squad is Daemonhosts the majority toughness goes up to 4, and you don’t have to roll dice for that ability ;). If you roll a 5 or 6 they can help out with the shooting, and if you roll a 1 they make the squad even more resistant to attacks. And any roll that increases there cc ability mill punish assaulting enemies even harder.

So what are your experience with Daemonhosts? Any good advice?

I've already posted some math on daemonhosts here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...p;hl=daemonhost

That was on only daemonhost armies not daemonhosts for 50% to get T4 against enemy attacks. Getting T4 by fielding 50% daemonhost 50% death cult assassins might help but would require some math which I won't do right now (currently at work).

Still most of the math is still valid, as well as the criticism on their lack of base attacks or the randomness of the powers which prevents them from preforming above average in close combat.

@Drachnon:

That list you linked to is typically what I meant by “silly”. In no way is the Daemonhost good in cc or should be intentionally used in a cc situation (as your statistics quite clearly show). However, I do believe that rolling a 2-4 isn’t necessarily a bad roll. They are still standing there and providing your Jokaeros, Inquisitors, Acolytes and Servitors with T4. And if you get charged after rolling a 2,3 or 4 they can make a bigger dent in the attackers then the jokaeros could have done by themselves.

@breng77

I would not recommend putting the Daemonhosts in a unit of Deathcult Assassins or any other cc unit. I still can’t decide if it is worth taking Daemonhosts but I have considered these two units:

1, Teach Marine with servo harness, Stave and grenades, 2x Crusaders and one Daemon host.

The reason for this unit is to add some cheap wounds to a Teach Marine and make him scoring (with Coteaz). The Teach Marine runs mantises on Psifleman Dreadnoughts and protects against drop poding Dreadnoughts or other melta suicide squads.

2, Coteaz (or other inquisitor), 4x Jokaeros, (or any shoty unit you may like), five or more Daemonhosts.

Whatever you roll for the Daemonhosts will be a benefit to the squad, either by providing additional durability (1), Fire support (5-6) or by supplying support and deterrents in cc (2-4).

there are issues for both units.

THe techmarine is not all that shooty, so presumably he would be assaulting. At that point he is an IC and can get picked out.

The Jokero squad with 5 Daemon hosts, is 190 points before you add an inquisitor. And not all that durable.

THe units are not unplayable but I doubt as if they are really all that great for the points.

Haha ^_^

Yes there are problems with both units, that’s way I can’t decide on whether Daemonhosts are worth it or not.

I have played both of those units but with substitutes for the Daemonhosts. In the first one I have played a Psycer instead of the Daemonhost, it’s a great little unit, but S4 wounds them on threes in shooting and that’s not good. The blast that the unit can shoot when they have nothing better to do is rely annoying to Orcs, Tyranids Tau and Eldar, but it is seldom useful against suicide meltas like Podded dreads or wolf guard, ore deep striking Chaos Terminators. The Tech Marine can handle those units in cc without problem, remember he has a 2+ a 2++ and those nasty grenades. Switching the Psycer for a Daemonhost would increase the toughness to 4, and would rely help the Tech Marine out with his babysitting of the Psyflemen. Any roll for the daemonhosts power would be a benefit, to help with the shooting on the way in, to help with the fighting or to help with the durability of the squad (in the fight or after). But is it wort 10pts...

In a fire support situation I usualy filed 2x Jokaeros, 3x Heavy bolter servitors, 5x Storm Bolter Acolytes and an Inquisitor with Psyocculum. In this case I have considered replaying the 5 Acolytes with 6 Daemohosts.

Acolyte Pros: only 35pts, can always fire, benefit from any improvement that the Jokaeros give them.

Acolyte Cons: weak and fragile, cannot hurt same targets as the Jokaeros and the Heavy bolters.

Daemonhost Pros: Ad resistance to the squad, can be devastating in the shooting phase, ad some punch in cc.

Daemon host Cons: Costs 60p, unreliable, can only benefit from some of the Jokaero upgrades

I guess that I have to playtest them :D
