Buying offbrand paint.

Be careful what acrylic paint you buy, not all acrylic paint is equal. While it may be tempting to buy cheaper 'crafting' acrylic paint to save money, they are not nearly as good for painting miniatures than actual miniature/model acrylics. 'Craft' acrylic paint won't cover as well, thins differently, and isn't nearly as tough when it dries.

That's not to say that 'craft' acrylic can't be used to get very good results, it can, but you have to be willing to accept the short-comings that come with the lower price tag. If you don't plan on playing with the miniatures (Read: handle them a lot) and/or give them a good coat of varnish, they can be quite serviceable. But, in my humble opinion, good quality 'miniature painting' acrylics will always be superior, and worth the extra cost.

As always, it comes down to personal preference in the end.

I found it depends on your skill of painting. I've purchased Krylon Fusion spray paints since the run about $3.99- $5.99 for some ok spray. But I'd never use Krylon spray for pewter/ finecast it just doesn't coat well. Ill pay top dollar for a good primer from GW/ Army Painter etc. Paint pots I would use "craft-class" paints but within moderation, as they will usally be duller, and dry weird or flakey. I've used one neon green for the plasma coils from a company called Folk Art, and It was good.
