Templars of Ultramar [Sculpting Commission]

Hello brothers!

Sorry it's been a while since I last posted, but I'm sure you know how it is what with exams and all that. The following commission actually began one or two weeks ago but my camera was in repair. So until now (when I finally got it back) I've been making steady progress on the first of an eight model commission for the Templars of Ultramar chapter. These eight models include; A Chapter Master, a Chaplain, a Captain (Stand in Sicarius) and five Honourguard (plus banner).

As always I begin work on a commission before I even lift a tool so to speak. It is important I feel to get as much information as possible about what the client wants from his commission and then to produce some concept artwork which they can correct, approve, or just generally give two thumbs up to. So without further ado, I will begin by showing the initial concepts for the project.

The chapter symbol is a winged maltese cross.

Chapter Master (Initial Concept):

Chaplain (Initial Concept):

Captain (Initial Concept):

Chapter Banner (Initial Concept):

So this is the concept work I produced after receiving my client's brief. The crusader theme heavy in the description, as per the very crusader like chapter banner.

In the next post I shall show the earliest photos I have of the first model in this project.

So these are the earliest images I have of the Chapter Master model.

I tried to imbue a sense of being on the edge of action here, walking forwards with a terrifying slowness (or at least the impression of it). Marine helmets can indeed look scary when the pose is right. The sword is taken from the AOBR captain. The guy who commissioned me was very particular about the chapter master's feet which are inspired by the GW jump chaplain model. Possibly the most particular aspect of the model (and the majority of the future seven models) is the preference for mkIII style armour and knight style helmets.

This image was just for size comparison, to show my 'Cato pattern true-scale'. Not quite as big as the termie sized marines we see from other hobbyists (which are btw gorgeous) but I find this method much more modest and money friendly (all you need is a drill, a paper clip, a craft knife and a little green stuff). The cloak is yet to be added, as is the 'crown' icon on the helmet which makes him look a little more scary.

Also important to the model was this big ornate storm shield emblazoned with the chapter symbol.

A bit further along here with the first layer of the cloak on and the first layer of the crown too.

I feel it's important to note that the base I've used is just for sculpting. I try as far as I can to build them so that they can be removed later and added to a nicer base.

Finally we come to where I'm up to now with the Chapter Master. The second layer of the cloak is firmly on as is the second and final layer of his crown. I've also added the boss of the shield (worry not more detail on the shield will follow, it does look a lil plain atm even with the maltese cross boss).

Where the cloak on the left hand side of the image meets the company champion shoulder pad I'm going to place a shield of some sort. Either the one from the Grey Knight Strike Squad sprue or one of the two from the Black Templars Upgrade Sprue. One final layer needs to be added to the cloak which will smooth out the like which appeared when I added the last layer.

The Templar crown was inspired by the GW Helbrecht model. He wears a similar crown on his face, so I added one to the MKIV helmet (specifically requested) in order to make him seem less plain. To further add 'bling' I intend to use the shield mentioned above and many purity seals and templarsy icons found on the Upgrade Sprue.

I always keep more or less all the pieces of the model separate in order to allow me to come back to areas which need more work, or I change my mind about. The MKIII for example needs its final layer, and in the case of the legs, the first layer and this would be impossible if the shield arm was stuck on. Plus sculpting the head was much easier while it was off.

The full movement of the model can be seen in this photograph. The inexorable advance of an eight foot tall chapter master with a helmet which would stamp 'TEMPLAR' into any chaos marine's face and a shield the size of a tyrannid, not to mention a thumbing great sword twice as long as you! I personally would experience what Little Horus so rightly describes as 'Post human dread' if this guy came anywhere near me!

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h451/Zaevin/Templars%20of%20Ultramar%20Commission/001.jpg

Finally the plan for the shield is to add a bit of a border round the bottom and the top. I'll also sculpt a skull or some other icon in between the wing span. The original sketch was of a shield about the size of Lysander's but I'm glad I have the extra space to play with. Plus it's in the shape of a cross, what more could a collector want!

More posts will of course follow when I've done some more work on him. He may even be finished very soon. Next in line is the Chaplain which I will begin work on in earnest once I've finished the Chapter Master.

Comments welcome.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. They are very encouraging indeed. So encouraging it seems that I have finished him already! (Give or take a purity seal or two)

Without further ado then guys, Chapter master of the Templars of Ultramar:

Work will begin on the chaplain immediately Sir Tancrede will be happy to know. And I hope I reach Bigger-than-Jesus' approval.

Man, this piece is worthy of an 'Eavy Metal modeller(if this exists...if not, then another modeller-guy who works for GW). The pose is of so much win and awesomeness, the shield is really great and the helmet is ace! Great pose, great sculpting, great model. Can't wait to see it painted, by whomever this comission was placed.
