Sons of Medusa Captain

Around the beginning of December I was contacted by a friend (PJ) out in the states to find out if I would be interested in doing a commission piece for another good friend (Grey_Death - aslo out in the states) as a Christmas present. Of course, I jumped at the chance and given the customer and end recipient, waived any fee for the painting - making my first ever paints commission piece a freebie :P .

Anyway, PJ suggested that something which Grey_Death could use in his Sons of Medusa army would be ideal, which created the challenge of getting that amazing and vibrant green and black colour scheme right.

When choosing the specific model to paint, both PJ and myself agreed that a marine with a bare head would be preferable. In the end I settled on one of the veteran models with bolt pistol and power fist. Since he was intended to be a captain, I replaced the bolt pistol with a plasma pistol from the commander kit and added a back banner.

When the marine I had ordered arrived, I was pretty disappointed to find out that these models are still cast in metal and not finecast. Even more so because the model had plenty of really bad mould lines and flash, particularly on the rhs of the face and even over the right eye. While I repaired as much as I could with putty and sanding, the face couldn't be saved and ended up receiving an unplanned, yet fitting, bionic eye (the SoM are a descendant chapter of the iron hands after all).

After airbrushing a base of scorpion green over most of the mini (the coverage of that colour is so translucent!), the painting flew by, with the green being a lot of fun to highlight and shade. I tried to add more cues to the mechanical theme of the SoM in the painting with little bits of freehand here and there. I also faced down one of my weakest areas (freehand painting) when doing the banner and script work (which I'm still not happy with - I really need to work hard on improving my painted lettering!).

So here was the finished result:

As my first painted model since GDUK last year, it was actually a really fun project and resulted in me already having a painted model finished in the opening days of 2012 (I painted around 4 in total last year :D ).

You can also see some really massive pics in the post about this on my modelling and painting blog over at http://cmdante.blogspot.com/

Cheers,

Andrew

What powerfist is that? Which sprue is that from? I've wanted to pose some of my sergeants like that (fist clenched and held down like "yeah, come here and I'll uppercut you in the gut"), but I can't find an appropriate fist.
