The Old Spearhead Rules

Okay guys - I just found my old printed out set of rules for the 40k spearheads - one key question - does anyone use them?

If yes, what are they like, what do you suggest for creating one and how much do they help?

If no, why is that, have you heard or seen of them before or is this 'new news' to you and would you consider using them?

Old? You mean like a year old right? Lots of vehicles?

Yeah, Ive used them. Theyre fun, definitely a different kind of game and one thats good to shake it up from time to time.

I suggest making sure you have enough vehicles for it to be fun, as they really are a focus for the game in alot of ways. Its alot like playing apocalypse light, and as such I recommend over 2k but under 3k in points per side. You can do it for less, but its not hard to have an 800-1000pt spearhead if your so inclined, and since they lay outside the FOC that can be a bit unbalancing at lower point totals.

Yeah, I've played several games of Spearhead this last year. My favorite is working the Spearhead rules into a game of Apocalypse. This is really helpful for those players with large collections but without a lot of super-heavies. Even super-heavies must be respectful of a squadron of Archeotech Predator Annihilators.

I've only used them with my Orks - using the Mass Attack spearhead, it's a beastly piece allowing each (of upto 6) unit equivi Str. 7 Kraks, Preferred Enemy vs MC's and allowing them to test for regroup without restrictions. - it's only 90pts + Units cost so damned good vs nids.

I'm thinking of trialing either the Archeotech Spearhead or Tank Hunter Spearheads...

The thing that's drawn my eye here is the Spearhead rule "Vehicles other than Walkers that are moving upto cruising speed can fire one more weapon than normally permitted. In addition this weapon can be fired at a different unit to any other weapons, subject to normal shooting rules." and this "Walkers and Monstrous Creatures may fire one weapon AFTER running" although they have to run then shoot not shoot then run. Though to get those the units in the spearhead have to be within 4" at the start of the Shooting phase.

The pieces in quotations are taken directly from the pdf (got a print out version in front of me).
