xxShadowmancerxx
Hi I just started playing Warhammer 40k a few months ago and started using Space Wolves. I bought a Space Wolves Battleforce, two dreadnaughts, Logan Grimnar, and two Space wolves packs. So I can crank out a 1k army easy. I've been playing against my roommate who runs a Blood Angels tank army just learning all the rules and how to play. I'm wanting to expand my army and make it more competitive but I don't even know where to begin. I would love some advice! Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/245936-new-wolf-advise/ Share on other sites
Jonas Stromclaw
Well, firstly, we need to know what your current army list and playstyle is. The more information you give us, the better advice we can give. For example, I'd like to recommend a pack of long fangs or two, but I don't know how that would fit with how you play. Welcome to the Fang! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/245936-new-wolf-advise/#findComment-2974992 Share on other sites
Karack Blackstone
I bought a Space Wolves Battleforce, two dreadnaughts, Logan Grimnar, and two Space wolves packs. This was a great idea, however, depending on where you wish to take this list, it should begin to inform you as to what else if anything you want to get. As your standard opponent is Blood Angels, consider maybe getting the Devastator box set. This will get you some heavy weapons, which depending upon the heavy weapons you would intend to run, may prove highly helpful. Plasma chews up any form of Space Marine due to AP2. If you can, Grey Hunters should be the backbone of your force. It's in how one paints them to differentiate between BC's and GH's. If possible, deny the BA's the charge; they get too much to let them gain it on you. For the same cost, GH's get more stats and gear than BC's, and can counter-attack if they need to. What are the dreads like? If standard, you'll want to figure out what sort of role it has: Forge World and the Ven Dread will grant you access to Plasma Cannon Dreadnought arms, should you choose to use them. Logan will allow you to use Wolf Guard as Troops: per the Codex, which you should pick up fi you have not, says to change WG from Elites to Troops choices. This means up to 60 WG Terms can be fielded should points allow. Also, when purchasing transports, pick up Razorback boxes; that way, you can switch them out. By not gluing on the top plate that the Razorback weapons go onto, it is possible to swap out Rhino to Razorback rather easily. hendrik
for plasma cannons you could also ask your bloodangel friend if he's got any left from a stormraven, they work perfectly on the TLLC arm Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/245936-new-wolf-advise/#findComment-2975004 Share on other sites

Jonas Stromclaw
Okay, thats an unclear way of writing up an army list. No offense, don't worry, we all do it, you'll learn. Its part of the process. 4 five man packs generally do not have the survivability you'll need. Plasma pistols are generally considered to be too expensive for what they do, particularly on the bloodclaws who do not get to shoot if they are unaccompanied by an Independent Character or Wolfguard. Your dreads have good weapons choices, no problems there unless you want to droppod one, in which case I'd suggest giving the Assault Cannon one a Multi Melta and a drop pod: excellent way to kill enemy armor before they put the hurt on your troops. Logan Grimnar is a bit expensive for 1000pts, but he can work. You also, by my count, have 60 points to play with. Here are the changes I'd suggest. HQ: Logan Grimnar (deploys with the Droppod Grey Hunter squad) 275 Elites: Dreadnought w/ Twin-Linked Lascannons, 135 Dreadnought w/ Multimelta, Droppod 140 Wolf Scouts (5) w/ melta gun 85 Troops: Grey Hunter Pack (8) w/ 1x plasma gun, Droppod 165 Grey Hunter Pack (10) w/ 2x plasma gun, Rhino 195 Total: 995/1000 The number in parentheses is the number of guys in the pack by the way. This gives you some alpha strike capability with two droppods and a wolfscout unit (there should have been scouts in the battleforce) as well as some mobile objective grabbers in the Rhino. Most of your antitank is in your dreads, but the plasma guns can handle vehicles in a pinch. This force will by no means win tournaments, but it only requires you to make two additional purchases and will be good for learning the game. EDIT: By the way, if my math or grammar is horribly off, I blame the fact that its past midnight where I am. Cheers! Grey Mage
Shadowmancer, one of the keys to surviving tends to be larger packs over smaller ones, especially against an enemy that hits hard in CC like most blood angels, or can pack in alot of shooting. Now, lets look at the models you have: Space Wolf Battleforce- this is a blessing. Thats 20 PA marines and 5 scouts with BP+CCW. With the two Wolf boxes you picked up thats a neat 40 power-armored (PA) marines that can be wolf gaurd, grey hunters or blood claws- heck the bodies can even be long fangs if you like. Id suggest a solid core of 20 Grey Hunters, one pack with a pair of Plasmaguns and another Pack with a pair of meltaguns. Youll note, you dont have the bits for a meltagun in that box anywhere, so youll be needing to either buy the melta packs from GW or trade another player for them. I prefer the trading system myself. Now, once youve played five or six games you can decide exactly how you want to outfit the other 20 marines, though Id suggest Grey Hunters over bloodclaws for several reasons- 1- they are more flexable than bloodclaws, 2- your claws wont get the charge off on assault squads very often wich wastes their only helpful ability, and 3- they are more survivable in close combat when being assaulted because the enemy will be hitting them on a 4+ instead of a 3+ wich makes a huge difference. As for the scouts, Id play with a lil bit, and equip them with a meltagun and a power weapon- its a neat 100pt squad that will rip apart the backfield of your enemies. While thats less of a concern with blood angels, if he runs devastator squads at any point youll have a neat counter, as well as vs any long-range tanks he might have such as predators or whirlwinds. Against more shooting opponents, these guys are invaluable for their ability to walk on from your opponents board. Logain is a cool guy, not who I usually pick to run my force but not a bad choice either. Now, he does open a really cool option- taking Wolf Gaurd as troops. This means if you like, you can pay an extra three points a model and sacrifice some of the versatility that a Grey Hunter has to get guys that are more customizable. What that means is you can give them more toys, wich is great- but the expense in points is only worth it so far at the end of the day. Thats why I suggest starting off with Grey Hunters first, as they are more forgiving and durable for the points, and you can take your time deciding how to outfit the rest of your army. Now, the Dreadnaughts are cool, very cool. You got the regular box? It comes with a Twin-linked Lascannon (TLLC), an assault cannon, a close combat arm and a Missile Launcher. Conidering your current army setup, ie the part where you lack long-ranged heavy weapons Im actually going to say you should probly outfit them for long-range combat. Dont glue the arms on! They twist on and off quite well, and its good to keep your options open. So... something like this then for an army: Njal Stormcaller- Terminator Armor- 270. (Proxy Logan for this and keep him with the Grey Hunters who have plasmaguns) Dreadnaught- TLLC, Missile Launcher (ML), Extra Armor (EA)- 160pts. Dreadnaught- TLLC, ML, EA- 160pts. 10 Grey Hunters- 2x Plasmagun, Powerfist, Totem- 195pts. 10 Grey Hunters- 2x Meltagun, Powerweapon, Totem, Drop Pod- 215pts. 1,000pts. Use your dreadnaughts to take out his tanks and lay down some fire on the incoming troops. If he doesnt run Rhino or Razorback transports, trade out those missile launchers for heavy flamers on the close combat arm, as youll get more millage out of them. Njal should be throwing up Tempests Wrath each turn and then hitting the enemy with something nasty like living lightning or Fury of the Wolf Spirits, but feel free to play around a bit. The Plasma-toting Grey Hunter pack can sit back with him and the Dreadnaughts while the Melta-toting Grey Hunters deepstrike into play with their drop pod and remove any predators or vindicators your friend has waiting to hurt you. If he doesnt have heavy tanks like that, feel free to deploy them from reserve a bit closer to the gunline your other units have set up. *shrugs* thats how Id do it anyways. Karack Blackstone
One thing to point out, and I'll note that I think until it was explained to me specifically it hadn't quite sunk in, is that when a Dread take an arm as any sort of an upgrade, it replaces the standard Assault Cannon arm on the right. The following I think are the ones the AC is able to be replaced by (no individual points, against forum rules): - Multi-Melta (MM) - Plasma Cannon (PC) - Twin Linked AutoCannon (TLAC) - Twin Linked LasCannon (TLLC) - Twin Linked Heavy Bolters (TLHB) I know I'm forgetting some. However, when taking any of the above options for the Dreadnought in question (no matter Ven or not, no matter number of them), the arm replaces the Assault Cannon, by being a different arm bit. Also, the DCCW has either an attached Storm Bolter (free), or the Heavy Flamer for its points cost. Be selective when choosing, as you'll want to glue the correct weapon on when building the Dread. Same as the Right Arm list above, the Missile Launcher replaces the DCCW arm when taken. Finally, Grey Hunters can go with two special weapons (MG, PG, FL) when taking 10 GH's. The question, that many here ask later on, is whether to take 10, or 9+1, as in a WGPL. If you favor Power Fists, consider in time the possibility of taking a WGPL with a combi-weapon and a Fist, if you're so inclined. If you favor PW and MotW, then it's not really a major thing; although, it may prove to be a question for later.
