Deathwing Company Standard - HELP PLEASE!

Hello Brethren,

I am wanting to paint my Standard Bearer soon, but I am seriously intimidated by the concept of free hand painting. Could anyone point me to a good tutorial on painting standards free hand? I have put so much effort into this squad (not to mention ~$30 in bits), that screwing up the standard is not an options!

Paul

I'm freedhanding a banner for the first time ever, it is a pretty intimidating concept, but at the same time I'm really looking forward to it.

Bringer of Redemption, thanks very much for that link, brother, it'll be very useful for sure!

Paul, make sure you post a picture when you're done, and we can compare both of our first attempts

I agree with that tut. Keep it simple.

I started with the back by doing the red and yellow fade then blocked the tower onto it with the rubble. Painted the lightning bolt and explosion on and blocked a stick figure of the guy in...

Breaktime...

Blocked out the wings and earth, Blacklined feathers in with a technical pen (badly, washed the ink off before it completely dried and liked the effect...) filled out the guy...

Painted in the stones and the scroll and tidied up.

I am going to re-letter the scroll so it is spelled right but it's okay for now. Remember, work from the background to the foreground, Lots of patience and touchups.

You could print out the banner, then paint over it a la paint-by-number...it's not quite truly freehand, but it looks pretty awesome when you get done, since your proportions are virtually guaranteed to be spot on, and it looks legit, since your painting skillz will ensure that there are imperfections in terms of color, texture, and the occasional errant brush stroke. It's like the difference between painting a marine...and producing a painting of a marine, except that you're doing it in two dimensions instead of three.
