Bloodmoon Waxing

I saw a few other fluff bits going up at the moment, so I thought I would also share my first draft of my army's fluff. Sadly I'm not blessed with the skills of an author, but I hope you enjoy the idea, even if it's written poorly! :woot:

(3 weeks later)

*Transmission received M41.996*

[Cpt. Javian Houldston, 452nd Riekvarr battalion, based on Coelia, Segementum Ultimus]

+Status of system: Liberated. Space Wolf forces obliterated all known renegades and ships.+

Repeat message? No Space Wolf forces were dispatched.

¬+Space Wolf forces destroyed all present threat.+

Operator Voss rubbed his eyes; the long 12 hour shift on the interstellar communicator arrays had taken its toll. Despite the replacement of his left eye 5 years previously, he still found that staring at the monitors affected his vision.

The last message had confused him; he remembered forwarding the request for aid 3 weeks previously, asking for the dispatch of the Novamarines. Fenris was on the other side of the galaxy, it was not possible for them to reach Coelia in time to be of any help in its defence. Yet the message was clearly informing him that they had liberated the planet. It didn’t make any sense. Voss took a deep breath and returned to his work.

Identification of Space Wolf commander?

¬+No communication made with command of astartes forces. Two dark grey armoured companies with liveries of red wolf head on grey and wolf skull with a red moon on black respectively.+

Voss knew the astartes liveries by heart, but these descriptions were off; the wolf skull and the red moon were attached to Gunnar Red Moon’s company and there was no company utilizing the red wolf’s head. This didn’t seem right. He span his chair round to face his supervisor’s desk.

‘Sir, I have been communicating with Coelia, who apparently have been defended by two companies of Space Wolves using livery I do not recognise. What would you advise?’

‘What are these liveries?’ responded the supervisor.

‘A red wolf’s head upon a grey background. The second was using the same symbol as Gunnar Red Moon’s company, but both were armoured in dark grey. That’s not the colours of the Wolves.’

‘They were the colours of the wolves once Voss, remember. It has been many centuries since the chapter wore that colour. I shall check the records.’

The supervisor looked back to his monitor, accompanied by the familiar tapping of a keyboard. Voss glanced back at his own screen, rereading the descriptions of the liberating forces. He hoped that this was indeed a fortunate event for the population of the planet and not some kind of trick set out by enemies of the Imperium.

‘Voss.’

Voss turned around to his supervisor, seeing the confusion in his face.

‘Priority transmission to Fenris, now! We need to get to the bottom of this. Our records recall two companies that match those descriptions you gave......the company of Yrom Darkhowl, lost to the warp during M40.457 whilst undertaking a great hunt, bearing the wolf skull and red moon......’

The supervisor paused, rescanned his monitor, before staring Voss in the eye.

‘What is it sir?’

‘The red wolf’s head on grey. Only one chapter has held that livery.’

‘Chapter? The message didn’t specify that large a size of force..’

‘Yes, a chapter. The Wolf Brothers....’

The words hung in the air as several of Voss’ colleagues turned to now pay attention. The Wolf Brothers were disbanded many centuries ago, citing gene-seed instability. Rumours had been recorded of some members of the chapter escaping to pursue their primarch into the Warp, but nothing had ever been certified to be true.

‘We need to inform the Great Wolf. We need answers now. Voss, you were the one to receive the message, you will be the one to inform Lord Grimnar.’

‘At once, Sir!’

Voss span back to his monitor and quickly made backup copies of all information and messages sent from Coelia before typing a hasty reply for more information. He opened a new channel and began franticly typing.

[Communicator Voss, Imperial Messaging Network, 147th sub-unit, based upon Terra]

+Priority One Message: Great Wolf Logan Grimnar, Space Wolves Chapter+

+Sightings of previously disbanded company of Space Wolves and Wolf Brothers seen in Coelia system, Segementum Ultimus. Attached at all communications received from Coelia in the wake of a Chaos incursion. All renegades destroyed by astartes forces listed. +

+Requesting further information and advice+

It's actually very well written. There maybe an issue with the Wolf Brothers heraldry, as I don't I'm not enough of a fluff guru to know if they already have an official color scheme. It's always interesting to hear different takes on lost companies. Overall, good work!

I had a scout around, but I never managed to find out what their actual chapter symbol was. Nor have I found anything in the novels that Black Library put out, so I just went for coming up with my own scheme for them, based on the pre heresy colours of the SW.

EDIT: Also, Thanks Jonas, it's appreciated :cuss

Thanks for the replies guys, went a lot better than I expected . I'll see if I can cobble up some more for you guys to read, as I quite enjoyed writing that. Finally get my hobby gear back this weekend too, so I might whack up a blog of me painting my stuff up to. Deciding to leave your stuff behind at home to 'focus on exams and work' really backfires when you finish it all then the painting bug bites...
Just to confirm your info on the wolf brothers, no official color scheme or icon was ever set for them. Battle of the Fang makes mention of them being similarly outfitted with totems, fetishes, etc. There is a line in that same reference that mentions their armor had gray coloration, but that's about it.
Indeed to follow up on elithren's post - the wolf brother's also attack their fellow space wolves, and many are described as "mutated..." and "beastlike" - can't remember the exact page (it's when Ironhelm confronts the psuedo-magnus about half-way through).
