Excubitor
Hey Everyone Finally decided to start a WIP blog here, in the hope that it keeps me painting at a reasonable rate. Going to start with my LPC 2012 vow. So to start with... I, Excubitor of the Index Astartes, vow on the honour of my Chapter (Storm Hawks) to paint and present at least Ten tactical marines, One Rhino and Three Dreadnoughts on or before the 31st of March, 2012. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done. This will allow me to finish my 5th tactical squad (one marine, sergeant and special weapon already painted from 5th squad), change my 3rd tac squad to las/plas/combi-plas loadout and add an extra heavy weapon option to my painted devastator squad. Here's what I've done so far (sorry for quality, very new at this!) Devastator heavies and tactical combi-sergeant http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050040.jpg Tactical marines http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050038.jpg Tactical marines and tactical heavy http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050036.jpg Rhino http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050033.jpg http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050034.jpg Rifleman dread (nicknamed 'Gunny') http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050029.jpg http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050030.jpg that's how all dread backs look atm Multi-melta/Heavy Flamer dread (AOBR dread modified) http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050026.jpg normal dread http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050025.jpg http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050042.jpg Since taking these I've put Knarloc Green on my tactical marines as an undercoat on the necessary parts. Also as a note I'm saving up to get the Badab books and a couple Raptors decal sheets from Forgeworld, so most likely for the LPC my marines will NOT have decals added to their shoulders, at least until I get the raptors decals. Excubitor
Just to give a rough idea of my paint scheme here's some other WIP photos of my nearly finished company command Sicarius Counts-as http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050061.jpg Librarian (all companies in my DIY have a librarian attached. http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050060.jpg Apothecary and Champion http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050047.jpg Veteran Command Squad marines http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050043.jpg and.. 2 WIP marines (not from vow, nearly complete) http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050045.jpg and my Counts-as Cassius (not sure if he's incomplete enough for LPC so didn't add him in) http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab57/Excubitor/P1050049.jpg I'll try and put up some pics of completed marines soon, so the finished scheme is shown. Slyen
Its a good start. Some advice though for the future, thin you paints down. If you are using Acrylics (like GW's own line) then just dip it in some water and then clean most of it off almost as if you were dry brushing. The models come out looking so much better though it is more work as you end up doing a few layers rather then just one. Still it looks like a good start to your vow and don't let my recommendation slow you down! Excubitor
I actually have begun to thin my paints a bit as I discovered that on my own (quite by accident lol). on the WIP command units there's still a bit of touching up to do (obviously lol), but I think once they get finished they do look much better. On to the vow I've finished the green on the tactical marines, working on the Dreads green tonight, maybe get a start on the metallics. Excubitor
Quick update. I've been making some progress on the vow. Got all the green done, and finished putting the 'undercoat' on for the white, red, and yellow areas on everything (as well as my two other dreadnoughts that somehow shanghai'd their way into my WIP box lol). Will try to get some pics up in the next couple of days, work and weather permitting. @Slyen, I considered your advice again and decided to try thinning my paints more than I had just started doing. Hopefully when the pics get put up you see it, but in person I think the greens and reds show up much better. Thanks for giving me the tip. It does take longer but I like the end result much better. Slyen
We all learn eventually... I think this was the place I really learned myself in fact. Can't wait to see your new models once they get pictures put up. I can't think of more then 5 chapters that use green as a primary colour. Excubitor
Well, with major life issues cropping up, time has flown and I failed the LPC dismally just as I was starting to get a hang of painting. however, E TENEBRAE LUX has come along and now hopefully this will give me the inspiration to get a solid chunk of painting underway. So, here it is; I Excubitor answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete 3 Dreadnoughts, 1 Rhino, 1 Razorback, 10 tactical marines, 1 Chaplain Cassius, and 2 Land Speeder Typhoons from Codex: Space Marines of total value roughly 1000 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to Storm Hawks and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end. Basically, my LPC vow plus a razorback for my command Squad and 2 typhoons. Will have to see how life treats THIS vow. Points aren't exact and the marines are fillers for various half-painted units and 2 dreadnoughts and razorback will have multiple options. Time to break in the new Painting station! Go, Liber! Go, Liber!
