Ghost Knights

Good day,

I'm trying some test schemes out for my Ghost Knights. The colourscheme is based on

I chose this scheme, because it gives some contrast with the ghost colour and the metal. I plan to make a whole army of ghosts (ofc only 1 unit will be actually ghost knights) and then the contrast will prevent the idea of an army of statues.

Well, this is my attempt on a test model:

I like the colour i have for ghosts, but i need some tips on the transition from physical bodyparts to ethereal, aswell as the colour/way the metal is painted. Once this is established i will try some source lighting on people with hammers and swords... But never did that before.

Thanks in advance for the C&C.

One of the things I learned from painting my old Emperor's Children army is that, to get a good solid fade, use a technique called "Wet Blending". paint the two colors on and, while they are still wet, take a wet brush with no paint on it and mix the two colors together where they meet.

This gives a gradient effect to the paint until you can't tell where one starts and the other stops.

Or layering with watered down paint could give a similar effect, where you just cover less and less area with the layers until you build up the etheriel parts to where you like it. If you do it this way, I'd paint the armor silver first, and build up with watered down ethereal parts rather than trying to water down metalics.

blending metal with another color through wetblending will produce a bit of a shimmer in the other color, which will fade out as the metallic fades out too.

I've never used thinner for the fading, water generally works just fine since acrylic paints are water-based. The biggest thing is just to have patience, though with only 5 models, it'll be easier than doing an ethereal army.

They are cool, how are they done, any idea?

Because they still have the contrast with parts metal, and different shades of green.

I have no idea how to do it, but I'm fairly sure its using the technique that was meant for the Army of the Dead from the LoTR range - the effect is very similar in appearance at least.

Maybe see if you can find advice for that painting technique?

The basic gist of the "ghostly" paint scheme by GW involves Astronomicon Grey, Skull White, and Thrakka Green wash.

1. Basecoat in Astro Grey.

2. Wash with Thrakka Green.

3. Highlight with Astro Grey.

4. Extreme highlights with Skull White.

5. Pick out details with Scorpion Green (eyes, glowy bits, etc)

Or in my case, I just sprayed it white, washed it green, then re-highlighted white (most drybrushing). I'd post pictures but they are not board-appropriate. Here are some links to the pics instead ;) :

White-wash-white: Ghosty 1

Dark grey-white-wash-white: Ghosty 2

THey are pretty cool, and i think i will use it for my ghost knights. But my original idea was to get a complete army of ghosts, and then such a scheme becomes very monotonus, because it's the only 'colour'.

So i'm now looking at the colour schemes: Deep Red, Black (with yellow/black heraldry, and ofc shiny black armour), or normal 'eavy metal metal.

How would you differentiate them from the actual ghosts then?

in my first post i showed an example. That guy painted them metal, and then ghost effects at certain parts of the body. This created the illusion as if the knights where only half formed in the physical world. However, that is very hard.. which is why i asked for another good way to paint them.

Do like I did, use some composimold to make some casts of some grey knights then pour in some clear acrylic beads that are melted down into the mold and use a syrynge to put a little bit of boltgun paint in streaks inside before it drys so it looks a little misty. tadaa see through models which i believe are perfect for ghost knights. I have them on display at a shop in Sacramento so ill et you some picks next time im there. If you like I can give you some links for the materials and a step by step. takes a lot a time though to get it right.
