Helixrat's Mortifactors

I've been putting off starting a log of my wip Mortifactors, but I want to share, as B&C seems to be an extremely friendly and helpful crowd. I have a little over 4000 points to paint. All that I'm putting up for the time being is what I've managed to get to a tabletop standard. I haven't named any characters as of yet. I'm not too sure how often I'll be able to get updates in, as I have a hard time getting my models primed. I have to do it outside, and Canadian winters are not amenable to that.

First off, I'd like to start with my two chaplains. Both are jump-pack equipped. Some of you may recognize the jump pack on the chaplain on the right. I have hacked and mutilated an Astorath model apart. The fluff (as in the book Warriors of Ultramar) states that the Mortifactors' chaplains don red armour.

I've completed one tactical squad so far. The sergeant is wielding a chainsword and plasma pistol. A multi-melta and melta gun in the squad. I've decided to use the Silver Skulls shoulder pads as my chapter markings, just painted in the bone colour that their armour is painted.

Next up is my first assault squad. The sergeant is wielding a powerfist and plasma pistol. I used a variety of death company parts in the squad, shaving down the blood angels iconography.

I've modified an AOBR dreadnought with front plates from a Venerable Dreadnought. I'm not very good at freehand, so the lettering on the name scrolls is a little sloppy. On the kneepad, I've put Tarsis, as that is the planet they fought Tyranids alongside the Ultramarines. I used the front panel with the Tyranid head on it for this same reason. This was also my first attempt at doing battle damage. I think I will do a devlan mud wash over all of the damage to tone it down a bit as it seems too bright.

My last picture for today is my Ironclad Dreadnought. Since this picture was taken, I've finished the basing on the model. I'm still not sure how I want to do the battle damage. I'm going to wait and see how the wash looks on the other dread before doing that. This was a pretty standard model as far as add-ons go. I have the scroll cases on the front and the banner top from the terminators on the front plate.

My current project is the Venerable dread. I would say I have it close to 50% of this level. I apologize if the pictures aren't very good. I have to set up a proper photo area. The lighting in my apartment isn't very good, and I was shooting on my coffee table.

Comments and criticisms appreciated. Thanks guys.

Looks good. There are a couple of things that stand out to me: First is the scrolls and purity seals. They need writing on them (well... squiggles that look like writing at least). This is something I often point out to people.

Second is the wash on the bone coloured areas. I appreciate that it's been applied heavily but I think the coverage is somewhat uneven in places. Besides advising you to pay extra attention to the wash as you apply it, the only other thing I can say to help is use the old 'washing up liquid' (AKA Dish Soap) trick - a drop of the stuff in a pot will help break the natural surface tension of the liquid in the wash and help it stop pulling together and pooling. If you don't want to stick it in the pot itself (at least to start with) then do it on a slate or a palette to practise it's use and application (beware of bubbles). :P

@Olisredan I've gone over all the scroll work with squiggles on the purity seals and words on the scrolls.

Are you specifically referring to the wash on dreadnoughts? I am a little heavy handed on the wash. I've tried to control the flow on the wash on my next models. Hopefully they turn out a little better. I haven't tried the dish soap method. I'll have to look that up.

@Grimdarkness I've started drilling the barrels on my tactical squad. It seems to have gone pretty well, except for the plasma pistol. I made a bit of a mess of it, so I'll have to figure a way to fix it up.

I've finished a few more models. First up is 9 Terminators. The sergeant is a work in progress, being a slight conversion from the Terminator chaplain. The scythe is from a warmachine model, so I know it won't be tournament legal, but I really liked it. I ran out of primer, so I have to go and get another can before I can start working on it.

Next up is my Venerable dreadnought. I've attempted to give the "glass" on the front of plates a smokey look. I don't know how well it comes off, or if it just looks dirty (the paint job, not the model). Let me know if you have any suggestions on improving that.

As always, thanks for checking my stuff out, and any comments and criticisms are welcome.

I've got a few WIP shots of my rhinos/razorbacks. I'm planning on doing some weathering work with the FW powders as well as doing some battle damage.

These are the razorback weapon mounts. I have a lascannon, heavy bolter and heavy flamer.

And a shot of the three tanks together with the weapon mounts on.

The base of the ven dred looks wrong. I think the grey base should be closer in colour to the small rocks which are a pinky brown colour. There is currently too much contrast between them and the small rocks and grass look like someone has come along and emptied a couple of buckets of them on the gray ground. Probably be better just to cover the base with the rocks and grass like you did with the others which look good.

I've been away from my minis a little too long. I've finished up my chapter master Lord Magyar and his five man honour guard. I've used Legion of the Damned models for the guard, as they fit the theme quite nicely.

The whole squad:

Lord Magyar was slightly converted from the chaplain with powerfist and crozius. The crozius has been replaced with a scythe from a warmachine model. I've also added an auxiliary grenade launcher to the bottom of the powerfist.

Another shot of the Honour Guard:

The chapter champion originally held a plasma pistol. That has been removed and a bolt pistol has been put in its place:

The company banner bearer:

The three additional guards:

I've also completed the three razorback turrets:

Hopefully I won't be quite so long on my next update. C&C appreciated.

I'm currently painting the army to this standard. I will do additional highlighting later, once I have most of the army to this level. My paint scheme is pretty easy. I prime black, then I start with a layer of Khemri Brown. I cover the Khemri with Bleached bone then wash with Devlan Mud. That is the scheme as of now.
