Pack markings

Hello my brothers!

I am halfway through painting my 1st pack of grey hunters and am a little stuck on the shoulder pads. I know pack markings on the right and great company on the left but to be honest I really like having just solid red and yellow shoulder pads. I've tried a bit of freehand to do the wolf paw on the pack marking but am pretty lousy at it. Is it an affront to Russ to leave the pads bare? I'm talking strictly fluff wise here haha

Thank you brothers

I know your pain brother, I hate doing free hand.

What about using viking runes as pack markings? They usually are fairly straight forward to paint as they use straight lines. I tend to do them in black first but then go in the inside with white.

I dont think it would be too bad fluffwise to leave them bare, but thats just my opinion.

every wolf lord can choose what kind of symbol his great company uses etc. you could even have them commit an act so vile and shamefull they have all sworn an oath of namelessness, nevermore being able to claim any honour in their packs name

my pack markings just involve some triangles, devided shoulderpads and the likes

mine besides the pre-made ones with bc/gh emblems are going to be runes - a different one for each pack - as for great company idk - mine as I don't have enough shoulder pads (barring my lf's who all have the same shoulder pads for unities sake) will be left blank for the moment until I work out how to do either good gs sculpts of the Dragongaze emblem or I manage to do some resin sculpts ^_^

Indeed as hendrik and reaper said - use your own creativity :P

I also use certain colors to identify what pack is what. I am horrible with free hand (I mostly don't have the patience), and decals always look too shiny for my tastes.

As said before, and it shall be said again, 'it's your army, make it look how you want it to'!!

End of Line

im going to use runes also

one rune for every unit type(GH, BC, LF and so on)

and use a diffrent color for each pack

only the PA wolfguard have the same rune but in the color of the pack they joined.

for vehicles im thinking of only marking the top hach of turrent holder.

so i can change as i see fit.

practise first om a paper or on a bit of plastic

then on a round bit,

greets

For transfers, you can coat the area for the transfer in gloss varnish, apply the transfer let it dry then recoat in gloss and top coat in flat or dullcoat. This will knock the shine down and help with blending the edges.

The problems I had with pack markings on the decal sheet was they are made for a flat surface and all of us know a Marine shoulder pad is anything but flat. I tried some freehand painting for these bloodclaw pack markings. None of them are identical in size or shape which is fine. SW take great pride in their armor and heritage so all markings are hand painted by them.

As for company markings I had settled on Logan's back in third addition but there were never any decals available for shoulder pad markings in great quantities like we have now. The star is hand painted.

These pics were taken prior to dull coating the pack.

If your having a hard time with paws it's tough to know what to suggest other than transfers. I learnt to paint free hand by painting over the transfers to get rid of the shine.

If you do try free hand try and keep it small to start with. Paws should be made from three overlapping circles with 4 dots in a semi circle across the top and then 4 triangles on top of the circles like Galaxychief has shown, not really the easiest design to start with. I started with the simple shapes triangles etc. They are easier than you might think as long as you start by putting dots at each corner and then joining the dots with lines.

You can see my wolves here chaptermasters.com/Spacewolves.htm if you'd like to see how I've done mine.

I use the pack markings that have been around forever- black/red for grey hunters, red/yellow for bloodclaws, etc. The darker color always is the background, the lighter the mark itself, and my packs are organized by norse runes- some specialists I cheat with though, like using the bumpy shoulderpad of a mark V etc, so I can switch my plasmapistols between packs without ruining the effect. HQs get three runes, Wolf Gaurd get two of them in a personal combination unless theyre in TDA- in wich case they often dont get one, but might get two or three depending on my mood.

If you're having trouble with transfers you can add 20-30% White Vinegar to the water which softens the decal and allows it to follow the contours of the shoulderpad.

Think I'll try this. Cheaper that the alcohol based solutions. I usually cut lines into the clear part of transfers before wetting them. Helps reduce bumps. Smooth down with kitchen roll and paint varnish after full dry.

If you just want patterns on the pack marking pad. Try drawing on with a soft pencil first. Just make sure it doesn't have a sharp point or it'll scratch.

thanks forte - I've tried before but it always scratched so I simply repainted, will try it with softer pencils now ;)

try at least a 2B, if not higher. Sharpen it to get a point but run it over some paper to soften the tip a little. You don't need to fully draw it out either. Just a bit of an outline for guidance.
