Looking for grey primer

Recommended Posts

At the moment I use Citadel's Chaos black. Quite frankly, I love the stuff. But I've finally realized many of the evils that come with priming black. I'd like some nice grey primer, that is hopefully cheaper, and provides the nice thin coat that GW's stuff does.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I'm contemplating just using the color place stuff from Wal-Mart, but are the rumors that "most primers are basically the same" true?

Auto Primer is mostly the way to go. Tamiya Grey Primer is my asbolute favorite.

GW Primer is just...too expensive.

And Forgotten Knight gets bonus points for recommending the Testors. Usually you can get a can of it for $6 in smaller quantities than the giant cans of GW spray, and they have a wider selection. I don't usually need a can that can prime an entire army one color.

The current GW primer is great (that has was not always been true over the years), but is stupidly expensive. Krylon works pretty good, and their grey primer has the benefit of being a very close match to Codex Grey. I'm a HUGE fan of Touch 'N' Tone brand primer, which is relabeled Rustoleum brand you can get at Autozones here in the US for about $3 a can. It's very fine grain, good coverage, and it dries very quickly, it's my favorite for both grey and Black (they don't make a white primer, unfortunately, I have to use Krylon for that). The grey is a bit lighter, an exact match for Delta Ceramcoat Rain Grey, which is similar to Astronomicon grey.

Another decent brand is Board to Pieces primer, which is $8 a can and most independant shops can get it through ACD distribution. They have a black that is very close to GWs, a grey and a white. Stay away from their white though, it's terrible. It's an option of you like buying from your FLGS, but I'd stick with automotive primers.

Thanks for all of the useful suggestions guys!

I was in town today so I grabbed some Rust-Oleum. I tried it out on a black reach space marine...wow, just wow. I was like, either I didn't prime this guy, or this primer is awesome. I'm not done trying things out just yet, but I was more than impressed with the results, and at 5 bucks a can. Bye bye GW primer.

I use the Krylon Gray Primer as well. Good stuff and matches Codex Grey just about perfectly.
