LPC 2012 - New oath! SCOUT ARMY WIP

The Shadow Guard

Recommended Posts

A small 15 minute update:

Models have their bolters drilled and boltgun metal dry brush in preparation for the DA green paint for the casings and their armour.

More importantly here is arough test piece for the Camo Cloak Camouflage pattern. It will be a streaky pattern as shown using multiple colours, but will be a little more dense and also be washed with badab black wash last.

I would really appreciate some direction for this camouflage, and any better ideas.

Thanks

I'd criss-cross the stripes a whole lot too, just to break things up (like camo is meant to do).

Work from dark to light and then subtly back to dark to create visual depth in the camo garment. (years of RL practice)

Cool and distinctive squad there TSG.

There is this that shows loads of pattern types.

By your choice of colours it looks like you are going for Temperate woodland effect so you could go for

this one as a fairly easy option.

Or if you want a RL military version try here

I've used a 'nomal' green (bit brighter than DA) on the whole back of the cape, and used black and (light) brown stripes overlaying each other.

Not too many, otherwise the mini will look too cluttered.

You cant get 'digicamo' effects on 28 mm anyway, it looks untidy/too spotty. Most of the times.

I'll see if I can dig those scouts up and take some pics.

So I made some progress over the weekend.. well during Sudnay anyway... heer it is..

I decided to go with long stripes and then a wash to tone the colours down....

Then down to some detailing....

So a bit more work on the faces and a couple of guys with different colour hair. :P basic green base. I think mostly done except for the bases now. Not very happy with the eyes but that's as good as it gets for the mpment...

Thanks for the constant urging Captain Semper... not too far now!

SG

Well, it's finally done. Just five scouts compared to some of our brethren who have managed huge numbers and absolutely phenomenal levels of painting..... but it appears I've managed to crawl through! :HQ:

The final squad amongst cover.

...and for comparison my old scout squad from my Shadow Guards Army completed nearly 10 years ago nd displayed in the same background.....

Obviously i am not quitehappy with the faces... and i think i could have had the camo-cloak patterns a lot thinner and more numerous had I the time and possibly a lot thinner brushes!!

Congratulations Shadow Guard - you did it!!!

EDIT: Well, you have certainly achieved the "pop-up" from cover effect you were aiming for - nice use of the foilage. The camo is real nice - you managed a pretty unique pattern there. Don't be harsh on yourself, these guys are stunning. I know we all strive for improvement all the time but seriously - these guys rock!

BTW I love your old scouts too! I have a thing with te metal scouts - especially the shotgun ones... I see you have a bias for the boltgun config. Approve big time :D

VICTORY!!! ;)

Thanks for the sentiments Cap. ;) I'm pretty happy with the "pop out of cover" effect. Unfortunately some of the details on the models got covered by the foliage but I actually and happiest with the way the trees nd leaves turned out! :)

As for the metal scouts, I like them a lot too but what I don't like is the old "wartribe" pose of waving both arms up in the air for most of those models. The comparison models I've shown are part of a 10 man squad which I converted nearly 10 years ago... with the standard red bolter casings etc I tried hard to convert them in to reasonably dynamic poses in an era when I never used green stuff nor an washes.. :( One of the metal shotgun scouts had a great dynamic pose whom I kept unaltered. The other, I changed to carry a boltgun and a "Tellet Mine" from my WWII accessories... Here they are on my site Strike Force Zadakiel

I think the old metal scout heads had better detail and were easier to paint? If you copare the two I think 10 years ago without using washes I got better outcomes than what i did this year... May I'm just 10 bloody years older! ... :( The next squad that i do, will definitely have Catachan plastic heads.... I just hope that the new DA Codex will have comparable scout forces to CSM and also have the LS Storm....

It's been an enjoyable ride... and much thanks to Cap Semper's righteous enthusiasm.... just couldn't bring myself to disappoint the good captain. A little bit of reality-check from last year in not vowing far too big a project also helped. I'm just wonering now if I have it in myself to do a Scout based army with this level of detail...scary thought...but the 2011 LPC project has to come first.

GMB: Thanks for the support but I will not be wearing the official banner until my 2011 project is complete. That is my pennance... I'll change the wording on my own banner to reflect that I completed the 2012 vow... :(

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, now look Captain Semper, what you have gone and made me do...... :D

Armed with the enthusiasm and encouragement from the said captain and the rest of the DA community and buoyed up by the overwhelming victory by the DA Forum in the 2012 LPC I decided to forge ahead with my Scout army.

The next part included 2 separate five man squads which i started on the 31st of March and complete today the 10th of April. That's a great improvement for me also considering I was using mostly metal miniatures.

Highlights:

Using metal catachan and cadian snipers as scouts

Metal Blood Angel Scout Lysander from BLs Blood Quest limited Edition release

Catachan head for a scout sergeant

Modified technique for painting gun barrels

Shading lenses and targeters

Most of these are a first for me.

below are a sample set of images and you can see the details of the modelling and painting in my Scout Army Blog

I would realy appreciate any feedback on any aspect of these models, sculpting, painting, scenary etc.... I am especially after criticisms and pointers to do better!

SG

Hahahaha you are not serious... Scout army? Well the LPC certainly served it purpose! :D

Well done mate, they look great - the camo pattern is awesome, and I like what you've done with the foliage -they really look like they "pop-up" from nowwhere! Especially the guy with the ML! He has an excellent pose! Metal scouts are some of the best minis in the range IMO and I especially like the shotgun ones! So you know where to go next!

On the c&c front, I think the faces need something... Like camo? Two green shades? Just a thought...

You know what you'll need? A LSS! ;)

Nice - I was wondering what to do with my old tree set - now you have given me the solution.

Criticisms - not many :D

Was the gloss effect meant to happen? For me shiney, especially on scouts doesn't work, or was it raining ;)

The first thing that our eyes are drawn to on a figure is the face.

Yours look too clean and the eyes need a little work. Try using Devlan mud over bronzed flesh. Then highlight in elf flesh.

For the eyes add a small drop of Devlan mut (watered down) to the eye area - this will help to define the edge of the eye.

The irises are too big - a pinprick is enough and one is starting to go wander eyed :D mine do too!

http://www.fortressoftheunforgiven.com/Temp_LPC_Scout_Squad_Phase_11_09b.jpg

As you are going with the hiding theme - why not try some facial camouflage B)

Try some mud effects on the trousers too.

Not as bad as it sounds!

Thanks Semper and Elmo...

The gloss effect is likely because I used green wash over the armour after DA green. I think all the models need a couple more Devlan Mud washes... the faces already have bronzed flesh and then devlan mud..then a little elf flesh .. exactly as you said. the eyes... they are the best i have managed to date. I agree a bit more pooling in the sockets with devlan mud is needed.

i don't particularly like facial camouflage.. it's abttle between having everything drab or not..but I'll certainly tone the face down...

Once i complete the army and add decals... may be a satin varnish... matt varnish tends to gather dust like hell....

As for the LSS i have to in boxes and exactly the reason i started that thred!! :D ;)

SG

It took me ages to get my models eyes how I wanted them and I sometimes have disasters even now so yours are not bad - just keep practicing.

The facial camo does not need to be excessive but try washing the face again first - this alone may be enough.

I have not had much success with satin varnish - can still look shiney. You could try black ink rather than green wash - it drys matt. I tend to use a thinned black ink on most of my models somewhere.

And you know my feelings on the LSS - do your own thing  I can't say anything - I've got a Raven!

One good thing I noticed about the palstic scout boxed set 9sniper squad) is that there are additional eye pieces which can be applied to most faces including the catachans.... I'm obviously better with painting lenses than eyes!! B)

SG

Shadow Guard, I think your pop-up scouts look great! I think you may want to find something to plug a couple of holes in the tops of some of those trees (they just look funny to me looking like they have big holes in the foliage) and I'll agree on the eyes (I find it impossible to actually make miniature eyes look right, so I just refuse faces with eyes exposed) with Elmo. The camo looks great and its very cool you based it on an actual camo pattern. I do like the use of the old trees, I could never think of anything to do with those.
