The book didn't make me like Guilliman or Ultras more but other than that it was great. The Perpetuals are surely the greatest reveal of all. They are probably linked with Cognoscynths in some way.

My bet would be that the perpetuals are the Emperor's biological children, i.e what the sensei called themselves during the HH. Oll's recollections mention a couple of historical events that date back to M2. Who knows where they're going with it...but I reckon it'll be cool.

Not Dan's best work but that still puts it in the Top 5 HH books for me cause I think it is his 2nd best! Excellent yarn. Very well balanced with good pacing, cared about the characters and the stars shone. It was good from front to back and had no complaints on editing or progression. I am finding the reviews on this board nearly as enjoyable as the novel! Lots of Ultra-Butthurt from some of the Ultra's most staunch online supporters and backing from folks who normally do not like the Ultramarines. Robby G was presented in a manner that made him likeable while still allowing for detractors to get in their punches too but the quality of the novel overrides the little fan service stuff. Kind of got a "The Engineer" series vibe from Ultramarine officers and the Word Bearers really exuded a menace.

What is really nice to have is an Ultra novel that is even keel; most of the novels/stories presented on the boys in blue so far have either been Ultra-Arrogant/Ultra-Fan Service Ultra-Ultramarine novels or have been Ultra-Hateful, Ultra-Undermining, Ultra-denigrating Ultramarine novels.

This makes a helluva lot of sense, actually. It lends a lot of credibility to the whole 'it was only after that little puny insignificant guardsman after one of the Emperor's literal sons got flayed alive by Horus that Goldenrod decided he had to kill his favorite kid'.

True, you really like Guilliman after this one. My only disappointment is that he basically missed out on all the action in the middle. I would have really liked some "command" genius from him. I know a lot of it is implied even before the battle, but we've all heard the thing that was the difference in Calth was Guilliman was there and Lorgar wasn't... not that I mind that this wasn't the case, but Guilliman is basically confused, and when the moment comes tto show his greatness, he disappears :-)

Don't get me wrong, I loved the book. Its just an observation. Plus, we'll probably have at least another short story if not a novel before the end where we will see him at his best. If not, then in the aftermath of the heresy definitely :-)

but we've all heard the thing that was the difference in Calth was Guilliman was there and Lorgar wasn't...

Planetside it had allway been Kor Phaeron vs. Ventanus. Guilliman had been with the fleet, and in the Collected Visions books was said to at some point manage to send commands to the planet, but Lorgar was directing the Word Bearers fleet as well. IIRC it was A D-B who had suggested a while ago that the big advantage of the Ultramarines was that "Guilliman was there but Lorga wasn't", but really the situation was the same for the Ultramarines and the Word Bearers. Primarch directing the fleet, Captain/Chamption in charge of ground war.

I think this novel proves why Abnett is sitting at the top of the Black Library tree (although ADB/GM are certainly there abouts). It seems that the HH novels he puts pen to are woven together from the whole of the series a lot better than others. There are several books that act as stand along reads and dont really tie in with the wider series but this is probably due to their authors not having built up anything with their own stamp on it as yet.

Back on topic, this book is a blinder, if only for the reason that I now understand the ultras and their approach to warfare. I'll be honest I still despise them just for the overkill of mary sue that goes into everything of their GW licesned fluff but at least I can now see how that would have evolved over a 10 thousand year period.

In short, Mr Abnett take a bow
