AoD: Trial of the Champion

The viewing stands around the dueling ring were packed, yet silent. The rivalry between the rune priests and the workers of Iron had always been quiet, but intense, and today's gathering reflected that. Brom Ironmane had arived early, and stood in his corner taking warm up swings with his fearsome thunderhammer. His artificier armor was modified and improved until it was significantly greater in bulk than even power armor, but the terminator armor worn by his opponent was larger still, dwarfing the Iron Priest. Rhapsody entered the ring and lowered his axe in a salute, signaling his readiness for the fight. Brom returned the gesture, then charged.

Rhapsody called down bolt after bolt of lightning, casting the very fury of the skies at his opponent, but Ironmane was not to be deterred. He plowed through the psychic storm, the protective amulet on his belt glowing as it countered the eldritch power. His bolter spoke in response, pinging shells off of the Rune Priest's plate.

As Brom closed, Rhapsody called on the wolf spirits themselves to strike down the foe. Ephemeral spirits were not enough to floor the Iron Priest, and the duel came hand to hand. Ironmane landed telling strokes, and much work would be needed before the Terminator plate would again see service. But Rhapsody's blows were more cunning, opening the Iron Priest's guard and sending the axe blade deep into his side. Brom sagged to the ground and struggled valiantly to rise, but could not. Rhapsody helped his noble foe to the Wolf Priests before going off to his victory feast.

Twas a very good fight, with the Iron Priest forging ahead through all the psychic shenanigans the Rune Priest could throw his way, but no invulnerable save made the difference. Congratulation Rhapsody, you move on the the next round.

You hear that brothers??!! That's the howl of the wolf who's caught your scent, and is closing in on you right now. Even in your dreams you cannot escape him!!

...unless you too have learned the secrets of the fire swamp...

Well met Loken86!! Here's a big ol' Ale for your wounds and your pride!! May we fight together till breath no longer moves our chests!!

End of Line

Einarr Shadewolf and Thorek Jarlheim stood across from each other in the duelling ring, with what seemed the entire Fang turned out to watch. Two warleaders of significant achievements, their pasts strewn with the corpses of the Allfather's foes, meeting in single combat was a show no one wanted to miss. Taunts and jeers from the mens' companies filled the air as Einarr leveled his bolter to fire the opening shots of the duel.

Trusting in his faithful shield, Thorek sprinted across the ring, closing the distance in order to bring the killing smile of his axe blade to bear. But a single round, guided by Einarr's skill, fate, or Russ himself, got past the storm shield's energy field and penetrated just under Thorek's pauldron. The bolt failed to detonate and the wolf guard soldiered on, but first blood had gone to Einarr.

Jarlheim brought his axe around in a long lateral stroke as the Shadewolf stepped forward to meet him with his powerfist. The fierce flurry of blows saw Thorek's shield pounded almost into scrap, but Einarr was nursing a deep cut along his thigh. The warriors roared their oaths and sprang at each other again.

Einarr's helm had been knocked free by a fateful blow earlier, and Thorek capitalised on it, dealing his foe a ferocious headbutt. Momentarily stunned, the Shadewolf fell to the ground, only to find Jarlheim's blade at his neck a moment later. Victory belonged to Thorek.

Delightful fight lads, with Thorek's shield saving him from the powerfist long enough to finally land a second hit (I think Thorek was a little punch drunk, the way he kept missing). Well done Myxx, but Russ Brother 92 advances to the next round!

haha that be Thorek alright -_- a champion and a drunkard at that - if you ever find the Ale Cellar empty he's your man.

The viewing stands were packed today. It was the first time in a long while anyone had brought a Thunderwolf into the duelling ring, or that anyone had agreed to fight against one of the unruly beasts. Even Odin Stormmaker's bulky Terminator plate looked diminutive next to the hulking creature. Still, his face betrayed no apprehension, only anticipation.

He began the fight, hurling bolts of psychic lightning at his opponent. Galmar began his headlong charge, weathering the storm as best he could. He grimaced and his mount growled as one particularly strong blast took a chunk out of his thigh and the wolf under it, but it was not sufficient to put him out of the fight. He saw Odin preparing a new attack as he closed, so he urged his mount on, barreling into the rune priest.

Stormmaker wielded his axe with consumate skill, deflecting blows with the haft and dealing them out with the rune weapon's cruel edge, but Galmar had the advantage of the charge and the weight of one of Fenris's mightiest predators behind him. The Rune Priest was hurled to the ground, blood seeping from the gashes in his armor. Galmar was victorious.

Quickest fight so far, with Galmar's thunderwolf get him into the fight fast enough to win. One more turn of Living Lightning and Odin would have cooked him in his armor.

Even clad in terminator plate, Odin Stormmaker's fight against Galmar and his thunderwolf had been viewed as courageous. Thorek Jarlheim's eagerness to do the same in simple power armor and with only close combat weapons was considered, in the laconic opinion of the veteran Warhorse, as "gutsy." The wolf guard in question didn't seem to care, and began the duel by charging across the field at his opponent.

Galmar and his faithful mount sprang to meet him. The volume of the resulting clash would have drowned out a foundry. Slavering thunderwolf and roaring wolf guard rained blow after blow on Thorek's shield and armor while struck back. The force of the charge overwhelmed him, however, and he staggered back nursing deep wounds. But he recovered and leapt at Galmar, and this time the Dark-Skinned was taken aback. Thorek pressed, dealing a heavy blow with his shield edge that dropped the thunderwolf on its side, stunned. Galmar was spilled from the saddle, a deep gash from Thorek's axe in his side. Jarlheim roared his victory to the skies, then helped his defeated opponent to his feet.

I was... surprised. I thought good ol' Galmar would overcome with little difficulty. He did not get the critical second wound on the first charge, however, and when Thorek got initiative and charged, he rolled about seven sixes in a row! That plus power weapon saw Galmar defeated. Well fought Kami, but its Russ Brother 92 who goes on to fight Rune Priest Rhapsody.

Great fight! I imagined that this would be difficult without stormshield against such a cunning foe as Russ Brother 92. And then, the luck of Russ seemed to be on his side :tu:. Well done, brother, and thanks for the thrilling moderation of the fights, Jonas!

This was it, the final duel for the title of Champion. Rune Priest Rhapsody against the stalwart wolf guard Thorek Jarlheim. Both men readied their weapons, made their oaths, and began.

For the third time in this tournament Thorek started his long charge across the ring, shield up and axe ready. The warrior looked like a juggernaut, totally unstoppable. Rhapsody meant to put that to the test.

Raising his rune weapon, the priest called forth the fury of the skies. Bolt after bolt rained down on Jarlheim, the lighting coursing along the field generated by his storm shield. He came on, barely slowing, and Rhapsody redoubled his efforts in response. The onlookers grew uneasy as the unleashed psychic energy dropped the temperature twenty degrees, frost forming all around the chamber. The lightning came faster and fiercer, overloading the storm shield. Finally, quivery and twitching from the electricity, Thorek collapsed to his knees. In a final act of defiance, he hurled his axe, sinking it deep into Rhapsody's shoulder. The wolf guard finally dropped all the way, and Rhapsody was victorious.

HAHA!! Great battles indeed!! *chugs ale*

I look forward to all challengers in the next trial!!

I love this idea Jonas, and I hope next time we can get more challengers to sign up and participate!!

Living Lightning is really good, but I don't need to tell you all that!! ;)

End of Line

...wish I had a little banner or something... Damn my poor computer skills!!

Yeah, I really wanted to have some banners, but couldn't find anyone with both the time and the computer skills necessary to make them. Next time, if the mods let me do this again.
