Imperial Fists

Recommended Posts

This thread contains a lot of firsts - my first LPC project , my first proper attempt at painting marines and my first attempt at posting photographs. These first pictures are nothing special - black undercoat with a layer of Denheb stone over the top - but I wanted to keep up with the work progress shots required by the LPC.

1st photograph - tac sergeant and marines

2nd photograph - rest of the tac squad ( I turned these at a angle to show the tac squad arrow )

3rd photograph - Captain

Coming ( hopefully ) soon - yellow marines

Looks promising - I paint my Fists the same way. ^_^ A small thing I noticed, is that at some spots you havent COMPLETELY covered the black in Deneb... If even the smallest amount of the black undercoat is visible under the stone when you apply the yellow, it can quickly become quite messy-looking. Dunno if these are your first Fists or what, but going for a few layers of Deneb more would be my advise. Good luck with your LPC!

Another thing! I noticed you seem to have been putting great care applying your stone foundation, I mean.. Not getting any on where there won't be yellow. I do it a bit different - I take a large brush and apply a THIN layer of deneb almost on the entire model.. Then several layers, usually 3 to 4, depends on how thin your paint is. After this, I apply the yellow in a similar messy way. This proces doesnt take more than 10-15 mins (and most of that is waiting for the layers to dry). After this you have a very messy looking model, but this is when I touch up with chaos black and go over the areas that are not meant to be yellow. This is good for two reasons. 1. It helps even the yellow. If you go slow, its easy to get an uneven yellow, if you put a thicker layer somewhere, and a thin layer somewhere else - this will show with yellow, and is hard to correct. If you paint the entire model with a large brush, making the yellow more even is tons easier. And 2. It saves a ton of time. :)

I don't mean to step on any toes here, just wanted to share my experience painting Fists. If your way suits your painting style better, by all means... Have fun, and good luck again. :)

So second progress update. Everything was going ok till I decided to use some Devlan mud wash .

" It will seep into the grooves and when dry will look wonderful " I told myself as I happily splashed the brown wash all over my figures.

Important lesson learned - water the wash down before applying !!

My Imperial Fists now look like they have fought a hard battle against the dirt throwing inhabitants of the planet Poo !! :D

(Funnily enough the above pics dont show just how brown my marines are - but some of them are very dirty looking).

Im annoyed with myself but its a learning experience for me ( first marines , painting yellow etc ) and we learn from our mistakes more than our success ( at least that is what I am telling myself ! ).

So after several hours in the Phalanx's shower stalls getting a Dorn sized scrub down ( and more Golden Yellow paint ) I hope to have some clean marines to show next time .

Didn't realise it had been over a month since I had posted an LPC update ( must have got caught in a warp storm ! )

As you can see I have ( finally ) finished painting yellow and have started on the details . Amazing how painting in the skulls and metal parts and the captains cloak has suddenly bought this figures to life ( IMO ).

So the last stretch is now in sight - finishing painting, add some decals, tidy up the bases and I am done.
