Valten's WIPs

_Valten_

Recommended Posts

Right then, well I've decided to start up this WIP thread on B&C to try and get me to paint more. I have decided that my long term plan is to have a full Brotherhood of Grey Knights, with their command staff, vehicles etc... (and of course some Purifiers!). I'm going to use this first post to show you what I've already got done, and the current WIPs I have got.

Since I started painting Grey Knights last April (and no I wasn't a band-wagoner - I have Daemon Hunters back in 3rd Ed!), I have completed just over 800 points of models. Currently painted (and displayed below) are: Grand Master, 5 Terminators, 10 Strike Marines, and 5 Purifiers:

Grand Master Valten is a conversion of a Finecast Draigo, some Grey Knight Terminator spares, and a Finecast Librarian back banner. I think he came out really well overall.

Next up are my 10 Interceptors. I've started painting in a batch. I thought it would be a good way of getting them done before Christmas. Needless to say it didn't work and I doubt I'll batch paint again.

Of course a Grey Knight army is not complete without a Dreadnought or two. Well I've got three! I don't think the regular boxy Dreadnought epitomises Grey Knights very well so I opted for Contemptors!

Also in the pipeline are a Vindicare Assasin, Coteaz, 5 more Purifiers, and this little beauty - a Callidus Assassin conversion.

When all of this is painted, I'll have approximately a quarter of the Brotherhood completed - so still a long long way to go. Good job I don't mind painting silver!

That first post was to show you what is in the pipeline, but I've recently made some progress on my Interceptors.

Two have been completed: Justicar Florence and Brother Velany:

The other eight of the squad just need their metal highlighting and then I can finally move on to the first of the Contemptors.

Hopefully, they'll be done next weekend.

They look fantastic, very nice silver you've achieved. And the Callidus conversion is inspired, can't wait to see it completed.

Not particularly sold on the terminator helms on the contemptors, but other than that they look great and the bases are well done too.

Looking forward to seeing more.

The silver is quite simple (if arduous).

Black Undercoat.

Boltgun Metal over the entire model.

Chainmail over the metal except the recesses.

Asurman Blue wash over the metal.

Badab Black wash over the metal.

Chainmail over the metal except the recesses again, leaving a bit of the wash showing if you want.

Mithril Silver highlights.

Simples!

I don't own an airbrush, nor do I want one to be honest. I just keep my paints thin. It is this reason why there are multiple coats, but it gives a clean, smooth finish which is (in my opinion) difficult to achieve with metallic paint.

Great work, Valten!

I especially enjoy your metal tones - is there a secret to them I haven't figured out?

Pity you didn't get more comments, you sure deserve them.

BTW, I really like you Contemptor - which is funny, as I neither like GK nor the Contemptor Dread... You do make it work, however ^^

Thank you for all of the kind comments so far.

@Terminatorinhell - I wrote a quick guide to the metal a few posts up. I'm going to do a step by step guide next time I paint power armour, which will be after I do the first Contemptor.

I'll hopefully have the rest of the Interceptors done this weekend - so I'll put an update up early next week.

Any C&C will be gracefully received.

So, big update today.

I'm pleased to announce that I have finally completed the Interceptors!

So we've got Brothers Forest and Raven:

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/forest10.jpghttp://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/forest11.jpg

And Brothers Hardy and Kirk.

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/hardy-10.jpghttp://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/hardy-11.jpg

To be honest I haven't enjoyed painting the Interceptors due to me doing them in a batch. I guess you live and learn and I won't be batch painting groups of models anymore!

This force has been coming together since April 2011 - and the following has been completed:

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/force110.jpg

This consists of:

Grand Master.

5 Man Terminator Squad.

5 Man Purifier Squad.

10 Man Strike Squad.

10 Man Interceptor Squad.

Amazingly this comes to 1141 points painted! Not a bad show as far as I'm concerned, and I'm happy with the overall look of the force.

Just because I can, here is an image of everything I have, including the unpainted stuff.

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/force210.jpg

Still to paint I have:

2 Contemptors with 2 twin linked autocannons.

1 Relic Contemptor with assault cannon.

5 more Purifiers.

Coteaz.

Vindicare Assassin.

Callidus Assasin.

All in all this puts me over 2,000 points of Grey Knights.

Anyway, the time has come.... (drum roll....) to start a Contemptor!!!

I've done the two base coats, plus the to washes over the armour, and started on one of the legs.

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/dread110.jpghttp://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/dread210.jpg

It is much more difficult to achieve a smooth finish to the metal, but overall I'm pretty happy. The only thing that bugs me is the bubbles on the feet. I'm going to leave them on this Contemptor, but will fill the other two with liquid green stuff before I undercoat them.

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/dread310.jpg

With the infantry models I have, I haven't really added any proper shading - instead I've allowed the metallic paint to provide it's own shading. Something which I think works quite well on them. I don't know if I'm going to try and shade the Dreadnoughts directly yet. On one hand I see examples of Grey Knight Dreadnoughts elsewhere on the internet which are shaded and they look great. But on the other hand I'm not sure if it's something that I'll be able to pull off well.

For the time being I'm going to stick with the same process as I've done with the infantry. Once the armour and darker metal have been 'completed' I'll have a better idea of whether the Dreadnought needs 'manual' shading.

C&C as usual please guys.

It's update time! I've been working on the Contemptor chassis... and it's finished!

Here is Brother Stark (recently been reading Game of Thrones):

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark110.jpg

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark210.jpg

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark510.jpg

You may notice that he has a number of more 'bits' added to him since last week. This is for two reasons. The first is that I think he looks much better now.

The second reason comes hand in hand with something that I've learnt this week - don't use old metallic paint. I've been using the same pot of Chainmail since April last year, and it was almost empty. Whilst painting the torso I'd noticed that some of the paint had gone solid in tiny balls of paint - which when painted onto areas of large metallic paint ruin it completely as you lose the smoothness that comes with thinning down paint. Some of the areas of the Contemptor has been cleaned using a little sandpaper, and then a new pot of Chainmail has been used and all has been well. However, I couldn't get the smoothness right on some areas of the model so I looked through my bits box to see what I could use to cover up these ruined areas.

Well, I had no bits that I could use apart from the etched brass - which has been used in areas and I'm really happy with. Then I found the solution! With all of the power armour boxes I've gotten over the last ten months, I've got a good number of backpacks and shoulder pads left over. If you take a look at them they're covered in extra detail like purity seals and the like. So I took my craft knife to about a dozen of my spares and cut out the extra things I've used on the model. The scrolls on the inside left leg for example are taken from a power armour backpack! Works a treat when you're running low on bitz.

I'm especially happy with the dark metal on the Contemptor. All of the range weapons in the army are just Boltgun Metal with a thick splash of Badab Black, then highlighted with Mithril Silver. When I did this on the large areas, especially the back of the Contemptor I found that there wasn't enough of a contrast between the 'moving' components of the model and the shining 'armour'. With this in mind I covered the dark metal in Devlan Mud once the Badab had dried, and it has resulted in the dirty, grimy metallic colour you can see. Really, really happy.

I've learnt a lot from doing this chassis - now I just need to get the autocannons finished. I'm thinking of doing the weapon housing in red to match the rest of the force - what do you guys think?

C&C always welcome.

Another week, another update.

I've finished the autocannons for Brother Stark - I'm really happy with how they came out in the end, and I think the mutted red and gold from the autocannons bring a lot to finish the Dreadnought off.

You may also notice the extra detailing on the left knee. When I took the Dreadnought to the weekly Vets night at my local GW, the manager there really liked the model and paint job, but recommended that I paint the knee in the heraldry of Brother Stark. Well, when it comes to Grey Knight armour I'm a little 'old skool' in that the armour is unpainted to represent purity, and the only area to show heraldry is on a shield or right shoulder pad!

So, I've added a little etched brass and another purity seal to add colour to that area of the model. What do you think?

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/autoca10.jpg

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark-10.jpg

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark-11.jpg

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark-12.jpg

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/stark-13.jpg

I've also started working on the second Contemptor. I had originally planned to start working on Coteaz or one of the Assassins but the Dreadnought was calling out to me!

It's not much to look at yet, just having the two base coats and washes over the metal. YOu may notice that there are more details on this picture than the last time I showed this Contemptor off though. One thing that I've learnt painting Brother Stark is that large areas of Silver are not only a pain to paint, but don't look amazing. So I've dug through my bits box and added a little more etched brass, and extras left over from other sprues. I've also tried my hand at Green Stuff again and added a large litany scroll that goes across the front of the model. Overall, I'm quite pleased with how it came out.

http://i46.servimg.com/u/f46/16/26/17/42/contem11.jpg

And finally, for some reason I found myself buying more models. I had planned to not buy anything else until I'd painted what I've got, but quite fancied trying out running 10 Terminators in 1,500 points, so I bought another box to bring Squad Arvent up to a full compliment!
