New GW paints...

Recommended Posts

So it has come to pass that I move from the GW paint lines, GW is changing their paints AGAIN (I knew this was coming), I held out hope, but they have changed things to much, I am done.

So my debate is which new paint line will recvieve my patronage; Reaper, P3, or Vallejo.

Reaper and Vallejo are both ahead on the list due to the dropper bottles, whereas I have personally used Reaper and P3.

I have heard the most good press about Vallejo and P3, but I have not heard anything bad about any of the three choices except for the P3's bottle.

So I am at a loss, I play Black Templar if that helps, I am leaning to Vallejo, but I am bnot so sure.

any help would be awesome.

My advice is to not limit yourself to one range. All of the different ranges out there have their uses, so if you see a colour that you think looks cool and you'll use, go for it. And it's possible to buy empty Vallejo-style dropper bottles if you wish to transfer the P3 paints into those (although I can't think where from off the top of my head).

Vallejo's model color range is Ah-mazing imo. Check 'em!

As a fellow BT player I have some suggestions.

- Vallejo MC Black

- Vallejo MC Black grey

- Vallejo MC dark grey

- Vallejo MC London grey

and

- Vallejo MC ivory (slightly brown-tinted off-white)

- Vallejo Glaze medium (for spectacular home-made washes)

Last time I checked (a few years ago) vallejo metallics were inferior to GWs, but YMMV.

I love my VMC and the ones I use for BT, or black armor in general are the same untill the last one. I like Dark Sea Grey and then white.

The glaze in and of it;s self is a game changer once you learn how to use it. IT makes washes, glazes, filters, assists in blends, and the list goes on.

THe Valejo metalics are good both the VGC and VMC, I use them exclusively except for GW boltgun which I find the best all around silver base made.

Just to ask, are Vallejo paints better than GW's? I've seen that they are slightly cheaper for more paint, (Wayland Games selling GW paints at £1.84 for 12ml and Vallejo paints at £1.75 for 17ml), but how better are they in terms of applying them to the model and the like?

Being "better" is up to the individual. I never tell people they have to use any specific paint I only recomd they give it a try since painting is the relm of personal style and what works for one might not woirk for another.

You do get more in a Vallejo bottle but since with dropper bottles you're forced to paint from a pallet I think it comes out even in the end. The up side is while you do lose some paint using a pallet you're going to rarely lose a whole bottle of paint if your forget to put the cap back on.

In aplication all paints are different in their own way and it even varies color to color. That's why you have to experiment and find what works for you. Form my perspective I find Vallejo a bit smoother and allow me more control of the consitency more than anything else. They also give me a broader spectrum of colors to mix for what ever particular effect I want with out having to mix multiple colors together myself.

Thats a fair point, and I have a habbit of leaving pots open and then returning to a dried up Skull White which I added to much water to and ended up with a fairly decent white wash.

I have heard that they are a bit smoother to apply to model, but I'll probably get a few pots and try them out.
