New to 40k

Hello everyone,

As the title says I'm new to 40k, and though I've always been a fan of the Space Wolves and Tyranids you can see which direction I went. Praise Russ for that! Anyway lol, the shop I normally play at is usually involved in 1500 pt or less games so I thought I would start simple and just use one of the sample lists from GW until I have 40k completely figured out, however I'm unsure how effective it will be and was hoping for opinions on it. After all I dont want to end up picking up models only to find out later they lack any true usefulness.

Dom Murray's Space Wolves 1500 pt list:

Wolf Guard Battle Leader: Terminator Armour, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Wolftooth Necklace, and Saga of the Warrior Born

Rune Priest: Plasma Pistol, Runic Armour, Saga of the Beastslayer, Chooser of the Slain, Melta Bombs

5x Wolf Guard: 5x Terminator Armour

5x Wolf Scouts: Plasma Pistol, Power Weapon

Venerable Dreadnought: Twin Linked Lascannon, Heavy Flamer

10x Grey Hunters: Power Weapon, Meltagun, Rhino

9x Grey Hunters: Power Weapon, Meltagun, Rhino

Predator Annihilator

x5 Long Fangs: 4x Heavy Bolters, Power Weapon

The main problems I can assume this has is the lack of Fast Attack and that I've heard Lascannons referred to as "Flashlights".

Thanks and hello again!

The "flashlights" or "Angry flashlights" as I have heard them called, are in referance to lasguns, the standard weapon of Imperial Guard troops. To be honest, I would recommend not using the venerabe dread, and instead use land speeders with two multi-meltas each. That would give you some more anti-armor capabilities and fast attack. The predator annihilator is okay, but I prefer whirlwinds myself.

welcome to the fang!

first of all that's not a lot of variaty in your wolf guard, you might want to give them a heavy weapon and a chainfist or thunderhammer etc

are you intending to footslog these across the table? remember that space wolves terminators can't deepstrike unless in a droppod.

the powerweapon seems wasted on the long fangs, for only 5 pts more you can add another heavy bolter long fang what might be interesting.

the flashlights as lasguns (the weapon the standard imperial guard have) not a lascannon (these things can bring down titans)

Welcome to the Fang.

Try to mix up the heavy weapons on your long fangs, say some heavy bolters and plasma cannons.

I currently run two Long Fangs pack, one with 3 heavy bolters and 2 Plasma cannons and one with 3 las cannons and 2 Missil launchers.

Just some thoughts.

Regards.

Welcome to the Fang Brother Cyb3rw0lf.

I would also recommend you take a heavy option on your TDA (terminator) pack. Remember, you can split off a single Wolf Guard to join another squad as you desire. I personally like to use a Cyclone Missile Launcher and stick that model in with the Long Fangs.

The Ven. Dread seems like a point sink at this level. I would either take some Land Speeders, or another unit of Grey Hunters. If you have the points left over you can give the 10 man GH pack a second Melta Gun. Or you could upgrade one or two of your long Fangs to use Las cannons (they are the most kick ass flashlight the Imperium has ever created!!).

Good Luck!!

End of Line

Welcome to the Fang for starters.

I'll be frank (but not in name). The lists on GWs site suck. They're designed to get people to buy certain models even if they're not that great. Prime example is the Plasma Pistol Rune Priest. It's a lot of points for a weapon which will rarely get used.

My advice. Read your Codex and get a good grasp on the core rules before shelling out on 1500 points of minis (which won't be cheap). And, have a good look through the Space Wolf Army List section on here for ideas. Post list ideas there and play test with stand in minis from friends. Much better than paying for minis and not using them. Unless you really love the model and want to paint it :o

Wow! You guys reply fast!

I've mostly been worried about the vehicles, I know GW can be really....Money grubbing? I play both Lizardmen and Wood Elves in fantasy, so my main worry was things that /look/ great by rules and stats, but arnt useful at all (Jungle Swarms, Razordons, Dryads, Glade Riders, the list goes on) which is part of the reason I'm having a bit of revenge by buying Mantic Games models for my infantry, the local shop actually encourages this for some variety in models between armies. But I'll be using GW vehicles.

One of the units I was actually looking at was a Skyclaw pack, I guess I'll have to read more on it though.

welcome to the fang pup. the ale's over in the corner help yourself.

On the list building. the Grey hunter is the backbone of the wolves and is one of the best troop choices of all space marine codices. Many people recommend taking one pack of GH per 500 pts. It's of course up to you.

On the Skyclaws I love my pack. I keep them pretty vanilla though and provide a wolf priest to lead them. I give one Mark of the wulfen and one a PW just for variety. With the priest with them you can mitigate their lower WS.

HBolter Long fangs are an interesting choice. Never used them before but i'd recommend for ease of use making each LF in a pack have a weapon with the same range as the others.

my scouts are tooled up a bit differently i use them as a a tank popping force so i have a WG in PA with a combimelta, 1 scout with a meltagun and i give them meltabombs.
