Destroyed Vehicle Markers

Hey guys,

This is NOT my procedure as a heads up. I found an EXCELLENT article online on how to create smoldering smoke stacks as a means to mark wrecked or destroyed vehicles and was floored by how easy and creative it was, and how GREAT the results are for what you have to put into it.

You can find the original article here. It is VERY SIMPLE and quick, and I think the results are fantastic!

I finally got around to trying it out for myself last night, and here's one of my results:

Some of you might be like me - in the sense that I enjoy thematic and fun 40k gaming and like little immersive details. To me this is infinitely better than some plastic destroyed marker, or turning your vehicle upside down - burning wreckage - so much cooler!

Anyhow, if anyone is interested, I did mainly the same thing, only very slight modification, mostly based on what I had on hand:

- Took some LED tea lights and just snapped the molded flame off the top - it was pretty easy to remove these without needing a knife or damaging the LED

- Applied a decent amount of Tacky Glue to the top and the sides of the tea light housing, and rubbed it over the surface to distribute it evenly

- Grabbed some poly-fill out of an old ratty blanket the cats use

- Ripped off a portion of the poly-fill and made a smaller piece and a larger piece with it

- Took the smaller piece and applied it to the top of the housing, kind of wrapping it around and out from the LED in the center

- Took the larger piece and applied it to the sides of the housing, kind of wrapping the poly-fill all the way around

- Pulled this way and that at the poly-fill to give it volume (careful to keep a finger at the bottom applying pressure to the housing or you'll pull the poly-fill off while the Tacky Glue is still setting)

- When I was satisfied with the look, I hit it with some hair spray to stiffen it

- Once the hair spray dried, I took it outside and hit it with some black spray primer in short burst here and there to give it color

- To make the smoke thicker at the bottom I then picked it up and give it a couple more concentrated blasts at the bottom to make the base a solid black all the way around

And that's it!! I made about 6 wrecked markers and 2 smoke markers in one go and I think it took me all of 30 minutes tops. Soooo simple, and I think what you get for the effort is great, and really adds some dynamism to the battle field! When you plunk one down on a wrecked vehicle, flip the little switch on the bottom of the jobber and the LED lights up and flickers, creating the fire effect that looks like its coming from inside the smoke, illuminating it from within. Super cool!

So, if this caught your eye, enjoy, I know I'll be enjoying em tonight when my buds come over for some brews and some 40K.

I read this some while ago and around the holidays, found some tealights in a discountstore...after carefull explaining to my wife ( that ended with a blank stare and the words "It's for your little plastic men? Don't try to explain any further, just take what you need " I just took enough for my current vehicle pool + projected future...about 10lights all in all :)
